LOL. Wii U literally bumping into a low-rise ceiling. Can't even beat Vita despite having one of its biggest title yet.

Let's update the blackboard:

Well, nobody expected 3D Mario to be a big system seller. Mario Kart 8 is what will really get the Wii U going.

Maybe they are also fed up of being continually served high priced low performance gimmicky hardware coupled with the special Nintendo slow slow drip of delayed games and HD remakes at full price.

Vita handheld outsold Wii U the week of its most hyped release of the year. Think about that. Or maybe, don't.

Was Mario on the Wii U hyped in any way? None of my students were talking about it at all. At least they were talking about One Piece and even Lightning Returns, but Mario? Not at all.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Dynasty Warriors

It's a porting of the expansion version, releasing this week on PS3 and Vita. So, a late porting of an expansion. I wouldn't count on that at all. "Just Yakuza" is a good answer, after all XD

Atrocious. Absolutely atrocious. Impossible for Nintendo to maintain sales over 10k until Mario Kart and Smash, methinks. I also believe Nintendo should give Mario a "break" for four or five years to get people to heavily desire the franchise again. The Wii U has effectively ravaged Mario's selling power, at least as far as Japan is concerned.

Mario doing Pikmin numbers? Wii U getting no boost from a 3D Mario? Put a fork in it Nintendo, Wii U is done.

VitaTV is a failure as expected.

I still think Christmas and the week after will see some nice sales for the WiiU. People are actually talking about it now (not just us talking about how dead it is).

I teach Japanese kids. Kids want it. They will buy it with their New Years money. That and 3DS games.

Now those sales could generate good word of mouth and bring about other sales... or it could fall back off a cliff come the second week of January.

But I remain cautiously (stupidly?) optimistic. The WiiU is being talked about in a positive light for the first time since launch. I do Christmas lessons every year and we have kids write letters to santa. In these letters it is the second most requested item (3DS game in first place and smartphones a close 3rd).

I could be delusional. But I think while the hardcore gamer at this point has shunned the system, the kids and families will pick one up over the holidays.

Mario 3D World.. that is sadly another story. Only a few kids wanted this from Santa. Far more wanted the 2D one. Yeah. That game that came out LAST Christmas. I have no idea on this one, that game seemed to be custom made for Japan. Cute cat suits, lots of colors, non vomit inducing 3D.. I have lived here for 10 years but sometimes (read: most of the time) I just don't get Japan.

People expected 3D Mario + Taiko no Tatsujin Wii U + marketing push to elevate the system for the holiday weeks. 20K is way below our expectations...it's only a slight boost from last week and nowhere near a decent turnout.

Ouch @ SM3DW.
Ouch @ WIIU.
Ouch @ Vita.
Ouch @ FFXIII.

I hope SM3DW has long legs or else home console gaming is really dead in Japan. Why would PS4 sell over there?

FFXV, MGSV, KH3.
PS3 software sales haven't fallen off a cliff I don't think.

I don't think it was expected to do 99K either.

Does anyone have the Gamecube LTD console sales vs Mario Sunshine's launch numbers as a comparison?

Gamecube was launched in Japan September 2011 and Mario Sunchine came out July 2012 if I'm not mistaken? So that was less than a year's gap then there was here, so I wonder what the Cube's and WiiU's difference in userbase was in that time.
Says 1.45M LTD on garaph for the week that Sunshine released, so it had a slightly bigger installed base to work with (1.24x) but the game sold like 2.6x as much as 3DW.

For a somewhat off-kilter comparison, Hot Shots Golf sold 175K on the PS3's 1M installed base.

People happiness about Wii U struggles is quite disturbing, honestly (especially considering how a Nintendo home console already showed with the Wii to not be "dangerous" for other people tastes, so...and nope! I'm not talking about funny GIFS that are always welcome!), but in any case: can we now finally accept that AT BEST it will repeat GC-HW-sales numbers?
I'm almost sure that it will not even be able to do that, in any case

No, the Wii U has effectively shown that it is an unattractive product regardless of the software released for it.

Hopefully Mario 3D World will enjoy the word of mouth it deserves, and will keep Wii U sales at this level for a while, until the holiday boost. A new Nintendo Direct with 2014 games should come sooner than later, and they may have to release Mario Kart 8 in the first quarter.

Hmm, I think all home consoles are fucked in Japan tbh. I see PS4 looking good for like the first month..

I agree. Which also leads me to believe that with Japan weakness it will be tough for any console to match last gen's lifetime sales. I just don't see the rest of the world picking up the slack (and if anything, the other regions may also be weaker this round).

It was hyped. It's being marketed a lot and you know it. It's just bad sales. Doesn't mean it's not going to sell in the holidays, but for now, it's bad.

Taiko is the true winner of the week. Not even Wiiu can hold us down!

Think about it?

I'm having it embroidered on a pillow that I shall place lovingly in my bed.

Can't tell if you're happy for the Vita, or if you're happy that the Wii U is doing so bad.

Either way, it's a dumb position to hold. Vita isn't doing so hot, and a blatant hatred for a company is such a waste of negative energy.

that is good news, so we can say it is dead in January 2014 if nothing else shows

I hate 2D Marios can't believe they are more popular

That's also true, but to say it isn't hurting the Mario IP is a bit strange, I'd think. Mario has been heavily linked to the platform.

VitaTV selling much worse than I expected.

I thought PS3 owners would buy it for cheap.

GE2 had an insane drop too.

There was this idea being brought up that 3D Mario's are more "hardcore" than 2D ones, thus 3D World would do better than NSMB U because of that reason. A fun theory but i question its validity

Would the game have done better if it did not look like a sequel to a game many played just a year or 2 game in 3D Land? Not trying to rile Nintendo fans up, but the game does look a lot like 3D Land.

Either that, or just release it on the 3DS and bank for higher sales overseas.

I hate for a lot of Nintendo's solutions at this point to be "put it on the 3DS" (like Smash, and I hope FE x SMT because that game will be a W101-dead-bomb-walking title on the Wii U), but... man, what a shitty situation.

Now you know how Vita fans feel. This thread used to be the official 3DS thread of celebrating poor Vita sales. What goes around....

I think the biggest damage inflicted on the WiiU is that there is no reason for anyone to really get a WiiU, even if you're a Nintendo fan. The 3DS library is sufficient for most people, and we talk about the biggest mainstream titles on the WiiU - 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, and Smash Brothers.... guess what? Nintendo is offering all those experiences on the 3DS too, sometimes before it even hits the WiiU. It's really hard to build any sort of audience on a home console when everything people would want to play with it are available elsewhere on a system with more support from other developments, and there's nothing really unique or outstanding on the system itself.

How different would the market be if the 3DS didn't exist?

DS keeps its reign, Vita taking over, PSP going strong, or whatever handheld you can imagine to be the leader.
Seriously WiiU and Vita TV's abysmal performance isn't totally unrelated to e/a, for Japanese market.

I really agree with you for that part. I mean, the best they could do to boost WiiU's sales to offer WiiU the new experience first, then followed by 3DS version.
At least make the release simultaneous. That's what third parties are gaining some extra cash for "handheld ports" for PSP/V.

Think about it, if 3D Mario does nothing then Mario Kart has a very low chances to.
Nintendo will need to push the Panic Mode V2.0 button.

Well, I've never understood the mentality of hoping that it will fail spectacularly to change Nintendo's way of thinking. If anything, Nintendo would just go all handheld, which would be a very sad day for a lot of us. A moderate failure/success would be a better motivator I think. :S

No one is happy the WiiU is flopping (well, some people are), most people are just kinda rubbing it in the faces of everyone else who kept saying "well, just wait for game x to come out!".
