I can tell that Notch is an awesome guy not afraid to be himself without being confrontational, which is why even sad attempts by people in the past (like that Angry Guy #435 from Gametrailers and Kotaku) to create controversy ultimately lead to nothing.

The Playstation VIP program probably does that. And you can't give them to everyone, otherwise everyone will want free games. And that's a shit storm waiting to happen. And besides, random people haven't done anything to "deserve" it. Notch brought indie games to the forefront, basically. Famousmortimer did #PSRNODRM. And besides, expecting, free games is kinda douchy.

Sony offers a multi-millionaire with a massive following some free stuff hoping to get some cheap PR out of it. Notch politely declines cause he's rich as fuck and can buy any game he wants right now instead of waiting for Adam Boyes to ship it.

Such a heartwarming story.

This is heartwarming. He doesn't want being a millionaire to change his experience in acquiring, using and playing games. As a game designer he knows how what you go through to get something has an effect on its value. Pretty cool. Notch is one of the better figures in the industry its sad to see simple morals he has go largely unnoticed because he's "rich as fuck"

More so than the obvious ridiculousness of a millionaire turning down games being declared heartwarming, I can't stand articles that insist on including his nickname in his real name. It's become a thing to do whenever there's an article written on him and I'm not entirely sure why. The gaming press just can't resist fawning over every tidbit I guess.

He probably just doesn't have time to play games or does this as a matter of policy.

And it's not bad that he did it, nobody is attacking your favorite dev, it's the sites that think it's news.

Marketing ploy guys. C'mon now, we all know it was to try to get him to say he's playing certain games and that he likes them. Same reason anyone else famous gets free stuff all the time.

It's also a good way for Notch to not feel obligated to like a game or play a game if he hasn't invested money into it. Free games I have no obligation towards, while games you spend $60 on you feel like you do.

As a game developer himself, I'm sure he values people buying/sellling games with real money, instead of giving them away like free candy.

It's not about how rich you are, it's about how influential you are. Wealth and influence just happen to coincide most of the time.

If anything I feel Adam should hand out free games to fans who can't afford it instead of a bona fide millionaire. His choice but that would give him kudos in my book.

This. And I'm sure when you buy it yourself, no matter what your income is, you might be a little more invested in the game. You know. now that I think about it, a lot of people have been comparing Notch to Jesus lately. And I mean he's cool and all, but he's no Notch.

Why the fuck would they even offer notch free games? The man is wealthy as fuck and obviously has his own opinion concerning games. You can't buy good press from him.

Boyes didn't just offer Notch games, it looks like he offered to buy him an Xbox One with games, since Notch lives in a "tier 2" country. Notch already has a PS4 and games waiting for him apparently.

Let's not be naive. The publicity he'll get from this story is worth a lot more than half a dozen games. Not to mention that had he accepted the offer, some (stupid, jealous) people would have given him hell.
