It looks like FFVIII never had an official version other than the original on PS1. Sure, it is on PS3/PSV by virtue of PSN and an emulator, but its interesting that there was never an official port.

You mean FFIX never had an official port. FFVIII did, as we all know.

I played the first disc of this a few years back. Good stuff. The vibe it has is quite unique. Modern European style setting as opposed to the traditional Medieval one.

Also I just realised it's likely the high school setting was an influence from Persona? Maybe even the way the Summons were presented and used in the game? I used to conflate the two in my head, but that was because I played P3 after this. Now I know the original Persona was released a long, long time ago though.

lol i might buy this just cause i never experienced the pocketstation stuff
I remember the pocketstation PC download was actually free for everyone on Square's website.

i could be wrong but i remember FFIX was in development for PC but somewhere along the way it fell through the cracks. would be nice if it wasn't just vaporware and there is a partially finished port floating around.

i really would like to see FFXV on PC ... assuming the game isn't a flop, it'll give me more reason to go PC only for awhile

and i cannot wait for FFVIII on steam. in alot of ways that was really the last great and original FF (i consider FFIX more of a tribute to FF than an honest to god sequel, even though it's really good)

I hope these PC FF releases keep doing well. I want to see FFXV make it too.
VII and VIII had actual PC releases a bit after the Playstation versions which is the reason we're seeing them. I'd be absolutely shocked if they made an actual PC port of any of the other games out of the blue or started releasing PC versions of future titles.

I have heard good things about IX as well, but that one doesn't already have a PC version available so would take some extra work on Square's part.

XV and Kingdom Hearts would not go amiss on PC.

Yeah, after this I think our most likely bets would be ports of the early games, I'm sure FF1-4 shouldn't be too major of a hassle.

Heck, maybe SE will even try a few DQ games.

VIII did have a PC port in 2000. Even came with the Pocketstation minigame included as an extra.

edit: you were probably talking about IX and said VIII by accident judging by the image

You are correct, thanks for the heads up on the mistake.

Oh yeah, how is Steam going to handle Chocobo World?

Hmm, I guess it's just my imagination/faint memory then.

It was offered as a free separate PC application back in the day. I suppose they can include that in the release.

Or they might just forget about it.

Want FFIX on PC so that someone can mod a speed hack for the battle system.

It's called ePSXe and toggling that speed/FPS unlock during battles for that 1000% faster battle experience.

Seriously though, FFIX actually runs at 15-20 FPS during battles (it was killing the PSX, and pushing it to the limit), which is something you notice immediately when emulating it. Not so noticeable when playing it natively on the PSX though.

Were the animations tied to the framerate? Or can you emulate the game at 60 fps just fine?

Speaking of which, Eyes on Me was cut in the PC version.

The original PC version came with support for it as a separate application that worked about the same. It'd probably be more work to rip it out, so they'll probably include it. Here's some dirty footage from Youtube.

Yeah I know it was a separate program that is included in the folder after installation, but I kinda figured SE might forget to add it in.

I don't think it was "in" the PC version proper, just enclosed on the same disc... It's possible they forget to address it. Let's hope not.

iirc it was in the installed folder

Will buy.

IX would be a dream come true, but since it didn't have a PC release in the past, doubtful.

What I would not give for XII though O__O One of my all time favorites.

If nothing else, the hooks are probably still there and it wouldn't be much of a stretch to get the old application working. Or so I would hope. Actually mucking with the content of these ports is a lot more work than I expect them to be willing to do.

You are probably right about that.

They totally were, unfortunately. Still worth it to avoid the aggravation from seeing the slow moves/spells/summons during battles play out, especially when grinding for mats/levels etc.

On topic, I faintly recall the original VIII PC CD version having a glitch where the speed of certain elements in the game was tied to how fast your PC was at that time.

On a Pentium II/III machine for example, Squall's Renzokuken was next to impossible to Perfect because it was just flashing too bloody fast. I had a mate who played the PC version first, and when he moved to the PSX version, he was surprised at how much easier it was to get the perfect Renzokuken on the PSX version of the game.

Same thing goes for Zell's Limit Breaks, and any other limit break which required quick and accurate button presses.

FF7 is on steam too right? I guess this is as good a time as any to finally play a mainline Final Fantasy game.

They already said after it was revealed at e3 that they are interested in bring XV to PC as well.

Day one for me. My favorite FF. Hope it comes with full Steamworks and cards.

And then I hope they port FF12 too.

I think the game gets a lot of deserved and undeserved hate. The hate for Squall is misplaced, I think. The hate for the junction/draw system is rather justified (Sure, you don't have to fight everythign to level up, but Drawing is tedious and boring because you aren't killing things. It could have been great with a little more thought).

Noice.

The last actual single player JRPG to come out for the PC from Squeenix was The Last Remnant PC port, and it was in a partnership with NVIDIA.

Sigh.

A publisher stating that it's "interested in" doing something or that it would "like to" do something doesn't necessarily mean anything. Far more often than not it's just an empty statement to appease whingers.

You can still grab the chocobo app from here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20120207061518/http://www.japan.ea.com/archive/ff8/download.html

I've had it on my bookmarks for a while now lol. The original site doesn't load up for me anymore, that's why I used a web archive. Don't ask me why is hosted on a EA site lol

The "Square Electronic Arts" partnership was Square's US presence in that era.

Edit: Although I see the Japanese writing, now. That EA partnership might have also extended to them publishing PC games in Japan. Square was publishing EA games over there... I guess they just had a gentleman's agreement to always work together in any way they needed.

My favorite FF <3

I still haven't finished my playthrough on PS3 though, so might not get it on Day 1. Hope it's better than the FF7 port was, but considering Squeenix...

Back in the day Squaresoft and EA had publishing agreements. EA would publish Squaresoft's games in the US and Squaresoft would publish EA's games in Japan.

Edit: You guys are too fast.

I'm interested how it'll look, the PC port had really washed out backgrounds and there are few notable mods for it.

FFVII with mods though is like playing a new game.

I am ashamed to say it, but I would repurchase and replay FFVII through FFXII if they were updated with trophies for PS platforms.
Dammit S-E, why do you toy with my emotions?
