Skull Kid being playable would be weird.

He's a malevolent chaos incarnate trickster archetype, and you don't really even battle him. Bringing down the moon is all he basically does, thus being an Assist Trophy makes way more sense than playable.

Not really. Samurai Goroh actually had a shot of making it into Brawl but failed to do so (was his second chance; first was in Melee). Skull Kid's chances were dead in the ground after Melee. The fact that he made it as an Assist Trophy this game surprises me, but it is the closest Skull Kid will ever get to a playable appearance unless Majora's Mask 3DS is released and Skull Kid is among the most wanted for Smash Bros. 6.

A better comparison to Samurai Goroh's SSB4 equivalent is Toad who was disconfirmed with 3D World's release.
