The weird thing is that I have had a lot of young girls (18-22ish) say, "you're not old!" whenever I have said that I was to them, mainly jokingly. I'm 31, and they knew how old I was.

I see this sometimes on dating sites (even some 25 year olds who think 30 is way too old) but it's not the attitude of every girl. I wouldn't get too riled up by it.
Generally speaking though (Age/2)+7 is a good rule to go by. Regardless there are 18/19 year old girls out there who will date dudes in their 30s if that floats your boat.

I mean, why "+7?" why not "+10" or "+5" or any other number? It's completely random.
Both of my most recent dates were older than me. One was 34 and the other 44 (I'm 29 but was 28 at the time of both). Nothing wrong with tapping some mature tail.
well as you age the age difference doesn't matter as much, 18-30 really isn't the same as 28-34 or even 44

Because if your 18yo +10 would result in someone older, and +5 would result in 14yo which would probably be frowned upon.

Being 34, I have a lot more girls ~21-24 hitting on me now, then when I was their age. Of course now I'm in a happy, committed relationship, but it still makes an "old man" feel good. That being said, I don't look 34, and I sure as hell don't act like I am.

Perhaps but they are at their peak of physical attractiveness or close to it anyways and that's all that matters at 18.
Because to the average 18 year old the concept of being over 30 is unrelatable and mentally is likely to equate someone over 30 as being closer to the age (and demeanor) of their parents than themselves.
In my experience, the reality is that 18 year olds are also terrible at guessing the age of people and will happily hang out or otherwise interact with a 30 year old while they don't know their age.

I think its fairly natural for young people to want to date people their own age, or in their own age group, especially if they are 18 and either still in high school or just into college. Not sure why that is hard to grasp even if a 30 year old isn't quite old enough to "be her dad".

I'm 29 and back in University, and most of the students are indeed 19. If I don't announce my age, most of the people assume I'm the same age as anyone else.
All the girls are pretty much dateable. (I would disclose my age, of course)

There's a girl I briefly flirted with who was 19, but once she found out I was 25 the interaction changed completely. She said "Wow you're almost 30!" and my retort was I was halfway through my 20's, but not "almost 30". Ugh. And then she introduced me to her friends as a 30 year old. I don't think I have a chance with her anymore. My age is in her head! I should have lied and said "yes" when she asked if I was 22 years old :/
The ideal answer is always "Wow, that was a good guess". You didn't lie, she assumes she is right, problem solved.
I doubt that would change anything once she finds out

I call everyone under 21 'a 12-year old'. For some reason it really pisses them off.
