Proper support for Wii U GamePad for PC is imminent (incl. video streaming)

Not sure if this has been posted as a thread before, but it's a bit of a megaton. At the recent hacker's conference, a team displayed their findings on the Wii U gamepad.

Essentially, they've cracked it, and got it streaming from a PC. They showed off emulators (including dolphin) running great with full gamepad support.

You know what this means? PC support = steam support. Steam support = DARK SOULS 2 ON THE GAMEPAD

great news if you want to use that awful screen and have every game look like shit

i'd rather buy a shield especially since you can't buy these on their own, but also i don't want a shield

...Why would I want to spend that much money? Plenty of people have a Wii U, and this is a cheap if not free way for them to get remote play PC gaming.

And it's not an awful screen. As shitty as the Wii U may be in many respects, remote play is fantastic.

I'll jump through the necessary hoops to use this as soon as it's in a somewhat usable state. Off-TV play for my entire Steam library, here we come!

It's a decent proposition if you already own a Wii U, however.

Is it be possible for me to legally use my Wii U gamepad as a controller for my PC, much like I would use an Xbox controller on my PC? Because I wouldn't want to risk bricking the console or voiding the warranty.

of course its bloody legal

you won't have to modify anything. the pc just pretends to be a Wii U.

I hope it has the same low latency as it does when paired with the Wii U. Because that is its only advantage over the Shield

I haven't watched the talk yet (downloading it now) and only glanced through the slides, but are they anywhere near the reverse as well? That is, streaming gamepad video to some PC program instead of the gamepad?

That'd be cool for streaming Wii games at least, and if there was some control setup it'd be cool Wii U streaming too.

i can still use it as a tv remote too right

This is amazing for the PC/WiiU combo gaming individuals. I can't wait to try this out ... hope it is easy to switch back and forth between WiiU and PC.

If it can switch between the Wii U and PC without too much tinkering then it might be pretty useful despite screen/battery. I assume it's not restricted compatibility like with Shield.

I've built up quite the collection of point and click adventure games over the years and this would be a wonderful way to play them. Hopefully it isn't too far off!

Would this also include watching video files on the GamePad? Because watching films and shows that I've backed up on the GamePad sounds very nice.

That's very neat. I wouldn't want to use it personally since I'm rather particular about my screens, but if you're less hung up about IQ it could be a nice added benefit of the Wii U for PC gamers.

It's unlikely to have lower latency than Shield. Latency is introduced at the encoding and transmission stages, not primarily the decoding stage, and Shield encodes on the GPU (while using the same transmission hardware).

I'm assuming it would work as a second monitor, so yes. XBMC would be glorious with it.

Nope. 3DS hasn't been cracked, impressively.

Why on earth would they? It's not modifying any of their hardware in any way, and it has a chance of actually selling the Wii U to people more than Nintendo could ever do.

A Gamepad firmware replacement is in the To-Do list though, I'm guessing Nintendo won't let that one fly.

I'd imagine it's just require syncing the Gamepad with the PC/Wii U whenever you switched, unless they're overwriting the Gamepad's firmware or something.

Still got 10~11 minutes until I can watch the talk...

Not even close to remote play. Don't confuse the two.

Just like how they didn't let the Wii homebrew channel fly?

Last I checked that's still widely available. Uses original code, so there's absolutely naff all Nintendo can do.
