Gemini Rue is a great one. I enjoyed it a lot.

Fans of that should play Beneath a Steel Sky.

Nice, I got the free copy from GOG, but does anyone have any experience playing it on iOS? If it is decent on that, I might buy that version instead so I can have it portable.

Gray Matter

Fantastic adventure game that feels like and old school Sierra adventure. It's not without it flaws, but it's still one my favorites. Challenging and immersive with a really interesting story. The 3D models aren't the prettiest, but if you play it, give it at least two chapters and you will be hooked. Oh, and the soundtrack is great. :)

Buy here: http://se.gamersgate.com/DD-GREY/gray-matter (swedish link, so it will redirect you, so I can't tell the exact price from here).

I know what I will be doing this evening. :)
Thanks.

I'm not sure if I agree with all of your Good pile (I'm not a huge fan of any Telltale games and I liked BS5 more than that) but the Brilliant pile is spot on.

Telltale games had their moments (C.O.P.S!).

Alright, got quite an adventure backlog to start on. Can I get some recommendations on which to start?

- Blackwell Legacy
- Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templar
- Deponia
- The Dig
- Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
- Gemini Rue
- Hector: Episode 1
- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
- Lume
- Puzzle Agent
- Runaway: A Road Adventure
- Samorost 2
- Scratches: Director's Cut
- Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened
- Syberia
- Wallace and Gromit: Episode 1
- The Whispered World

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is one of the greatest adventure games ever made - and is my personal favourite, so I'd start there. Deponia I'd leave till last or not bother playing

Fans of Wadjet Eye games should really play the updated Shivah release. Loving it atm.

Yeah, it's great. Very short though, think I got about an hour out of it. Inventory is barely used at all, 95% of the games puzzles rely on dialogue & information, which was a very interesting way to go about things - I'd love it if Gilbert does a longer game in this style some day.

Deponia I personally think is garbage, at least in the english translation. Bad script, bad humour and unlikeable main character. Puzzles aren't that great either.

Deponia should be last no matter what you decide.

Is Deponia really THAT bad? I admit that I was interested in it mostly for the artstyle and the reviews doesn't look that bad either.

I didn't put Syberia 3 in because it's more than likely going to be a 2015 game.
If Syberia 3 is like the previous games there should be no reason for delays. Static backgrounds, simple animations and a bunch of fetch-quests should give very predictable development process.

Damn, Deponia is that bad? I have to admit that the three you recommended are three of the ones that look pretty damn good to me.
I read reviews of the Deponia games on RPS and the first game got a mixed review, but the series apparently massively improves as it goes on. Several GAFfers also praised the later iterations in the last year's thread. But yeah, you should postpone playing it until later, there are some classics in your list you should get around to first. ;]

Try and get the smaller ones out of the way first.
*Hector (haven't played)
*Wallace&Gromit (good)
*Puzzle Agent (great)
*Samorost 2 (haven't played)

The Dig is really tricky, The Longest Journey is really loooooong. Dreamfall is many ways better, but you kinda have to play TLJ first.

Indiana Jones and Broken Sword are classics that hit the sweet spot of length and difficulty.

Syberia is pretty close. Some people don't like all the contraption puzzles in it, but I did. It can feel a bit dull at the start because of the stiff graphics and dull interface, but if you feel like that, use walkhtrough at the begin to get going with it. It's worth to play through.

I myself haven't bothered with the Runaway games or the Deponia games, and I feel no urge to do so. I played the demo of that first Runaway game, and it felt like a really bad game.

I didn't think Deponia was bad, but from that I heard most of the German published adventures have pretty bad English translation and Dubs. The main character isn't the most likeable guy but I think it works, the puzzles tend to be a bit on the silly side, which is an overall issue with Deadalic in particular and German adventures in general.

Yeah, those are really short and easy to breeze through. Samorost 2 in particular can be finished in less than an hour, and the puzzles aren't meant to stump.
Episodic games are usually done in about 2 hours, Blackwell games included.

Subscribed. Some really great stuff on the horizon, especially looking forward to Blackwell Epiphany, was really looking forward to playing that this xmas till it got delayed. I'll also need to hammer through the longest journey + dreamfall before Chapters hits.

I think the time is right for me to finally bite on that Gray Matter deal, been waiting ages and there's no sign of it making its way to steam anytime soon.

I agree. You should play those first.

Blackwell Legacy is a really short game (at least for a traditional P&C game), so you can breeze through it, especially since most puzzles in the game are based solely on dialogues and connecting notes in your notebook. Subsequent games in the series are a little bit longer (with currently the last one - Deception - being of decent length) and more complicated.

Samorost 2 is a simple game that you can finish in less than 2 hours. It's a simple but enjoyable journey.

Puzzle Agent is literally a series of separate puzzles to solve with few dialogs and collectibles here and there, so you can even play it consequently with another game.

I've played it and didn't enjoyed it that much. Very often if you screwed up something in the game (said something wrong to a Nazi, didn't manage to do something in time etc.) you had to play an awful fighting mini-game. So you either save/reload a lot or learn how to fight. :/ Not my idea of a good adventure game.

I'm from Germany, but I don't like most German adventures. Ceville was quite funny but I only played for an hour or so. As a kid I liked Rent A Hero, but that's from Austria.

I'm really looking forward to Dreamfall Chapters, Broken Sword 5- Episode 2 and Broken Age. I'm a great fan of Tim Schafer, saw him once at gamescom in Cologne as he was promoting Brütal Legend, Grim Fandango is really an absolutely lovely game.

- Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templar

- Dreamfall: The Longest Journey

- Runaway: A Road Adventure

- The Whispered World

Broken Sword is quite easy, so I would start with it.

Dreamfall is the successor to the "The Longest Journey" and many complained about the action sequences. So I would skip it if you haven't played The Longest Journey.

Runaway looks gorgeous, but I found it quite challenging because there is no "Hotspot" function and some items are easy to overlook.

The Whispered World has a beautiful atmosphere, but I found it too complicated for an adventure. The German voice acting is brilliant, I don't know if you can say the same about the English version. There were some complaints about Daedalic games in the past.

Man, when was Gabriel Knight 20th Anniversary announced? I just played the first one recently and it was a pretty big chore balancing between big screen with stretched pixels, and small screen where I couldn't see anything. :p

Guess I'll replay.

Ah I see, like a couple months after I played it. Oh well.

You can manually set a resolution in DosBox so that the window size isn't small.

Hope you liked GK1 - it's easily one of my favorite games, maybe the favorite.

I enjoyed it quite a lot, I did play around with the resolution in DosBox, and found a fair middleground, but it was still hard to see certain items at times and such.

I played through the second game as well, and as different and wacky was it was, I thought it was pretty great as well.

I can't stand the third game though, navigating with that camera and 'no clip' walking got to be too much of a chore. I didn't mind the graphics as ugly as they were, but the navigation...

Thanks for all the great advice. I decided to start with Blackwell Legacy, but I am glad to hear that a lot of the list is quality gaming. Deponia almost intrigues me the most now just to see how bad it is.

I love the third. Sometimes I think that one is my favorite. I never found the graphics to be as bad as people say. I love the interface and use of the environments, free floating camera, etc. It might take a bit of getting used to, but the way you can explore each environment like that stands out as what I thought the future of adventure might have been.

You rock sir. I've been looking for a way to get my hands on Gray Matter recently. It was Greenlit for Steam but with the publisher going bankrupt it'll probably never see the Steam release :(

I didn't even think of Gamersgate. Fantastic. It's even on sale right now for $3.40. Jumped on it immediately. Downloading now.

Thanks!!

I love Jane Jensen and cannot wait for the Gabriel Knight re-release and her new game MOEBIUS

Damn I was actually holding out for it's Steam release. Are we sure it's not going to come to Steam at all?

Anyway after reading this I went ahead and picked it up on Amazon for $3.4.

It's looking very unlikely it will ever make it to steam. I had forgotten the publisher had closed.

I was having an angry rant to my friend about it last night, it was all ready to go as soon as it got greenlit, unfortunately it got greenlit almost a year later and the publisher had closed.

I will tell you what grated my cheddar, it's a bloody Jane Jensen game, she's a legend, the game saw a PC AND Xbox 360 retail release and it's having to be Greenlit? Come on Valve.

Valve just said. You go, you go now, stand in queue. It probably got a few thousand votes, of which those people would have more than likely purchased the game when it hit steam.

Yea it was announced in September I believe...

I got about a third of the way into it and the interface was not clicking. I'll hold out for a few years to see if they remake the 2nd and 3rd, otherwise I'll try again then. :p

It's too bad Jane Jensen's recent stuff doesn't seem as unique, Moebius doesn't quite look like it would be quite as great, but I will certainly give it a try. Maybe I should give Gray Matter another go, started it up a few times and only played for like an hour.

Well, I most certainly encourage you to finish GK3. It has the greatest puzzle ever in an adv. game, and the story gets really goddamn good.

After that play Gray Matter! Then wait for Moebius. :)

"must-play" depends really on the person but for me it was. I was always a fan of Agatha Christie stories and the such so it hit home with me, although there were a bunch of faults, like the ending (for some people) and how the chapters got slightly worse one after another, but you should still see the story for yourself. It was an enjoyable ride and only the second chapter was a real let-down in my book. In the end, the voice acting was rather good for a translation, and the story kept me on my seat.

Honestly Gabriel Knight released today wouldn't feel as unique as it did back then. Modern world with supernatural elements and conspiracies is the most overused setting in the genre.

I was 12-13 when I played Gabriel Knight 1-3 and Broken Sword 1-2 games, so the story in those games was very captivating for me, but now 14 years later I wish developers moved on from these tropes and offered different (and more ambitious) themes.

Seconded. Definitely worth playing for that puzzle alone.

You guys got any recommendations for someone who's never really played any point and click adventure games before? I've played Telltale's The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us and really enjoyed both of those.

I don't know if it was the novelty of a game with live actors that was executed brilliantly for about the first time or what, but my time as a kid with GK2 was so memorable. I guess the problem with Sierra innovating back then was that they always kinda had to go back to square one and the games lost some depth with each big jump in tech. But I still remember that one being something special.

The Curse of Monkey Island if you can find a copy (not sure where is best place). Most perfect intro to P&C I can think of imo.

I think Day of the Tentacle is the best P&C adventure game of all time, if you can find it. Pretty accessible in terms of gameplay, too.

Check out the intro on YouTube and see if it intrigues you enough to seek the game out.

You should really try Gemini Rue...great storytelling and more focused on narrative than puzzles, but in the framework of an old classic adventure.

Hint: it's in the latest Humble Bundle, for Steam and Android. The weekly sale is also something you should check out, Machanarium and Samarost 2 are brilliant.

Monkey Island 1+2 Special Editions.

They are legendary in the PnC community and as games in the industry, they are great games, have a hint system if you get stuck and have being remade for modem audiences.

Also those 2 Telltale games are the buttom tier in terms of what makes a PnC game. Don't get me wrong they are amazing in terms of story, music, characters but they are not proper PnC games as there is barely any gameplay.

I have said Gemini Rue like a million times as its one of my favs but i though i would give MI the spotlight this time. Also you can't go wrong with Blade Runner if you can find a copy of that.

Hint: it's in the latest Humble Bundle, for Steam and Android.

That finished afew days ago. I'm sure a gaffer can help him with a DRM free version or a Steam key.

I'd say Broken Sword. Not too difficult and a good story.
