Gamestop needs the systems as well. Honestly, I think it's about these companies being a bit greedy. If they simply came together and said "this is how it is going to be", Gamestop would have to accept it or face irrelevance. It's going to happen eventually as digital games grow in importance, so they can either accept the trend or lose out in the end.

But they won't do that because they want to make that extra money, consumers be damned.

Gamestop would have to accept it, without question. The problem is whether or not you end up squeezing so hard that you kill them. Here in Ireland we lost almost all of our dedicated games retailers over the last 5 years. There's used to be 10 or so near me (Dublin City), now there's two. Supermarkets have NOT stepped into the breach.

There's a very real chance these things could all die off if digital takes over, and if games are 10 bucks cheaper ditigally, then digital will take over incredibly quickly. Can't afford to deal the killing blow to retail.

If the leading system next December is only pulling 1 million, this industry is in all kinds of trouble. This December is somewhat troubling, as it's basically flat, but it gets a bit of a pass since there are two debuting systems (one that is severely supply constrained) and two systems that are a bit long in the tooth. Next December, I expect each of PS4 and Xbox One to exceed 1 million, with the market leader (presumably PS4) approaching (preferably exceeding) 2 million. 3DS should be near 1.5 million minimum now, and that's just to be in the ballpark of GBA.

I don't actually see it so pessimistically. The only sector of the game industry that would be in serious trouble would be the AAA sector, where budgets are just ridiculous. The core and hardcore fanbase has grown since 6th gen, and will continue to grow.

If the industry shrinks, maybe console manufacturers can cut down on the extraneous features and make future systems focused more solely on playing games. Allocate some of that media budget to haptic and VR instead. The subscriber base will still be there for XBL/PSN. The middle-tier market would be sustainable again. Indies still have their audience. You would literally only be cutting out the very casual gamer, but if the core and hardcore base grows that gets easier to sacrifice.

Game prices could also be lowered (or a structured pricing system more easily enforced) and a more even playing ground established for non AAA games to sell more. It's not about lowering expectations, but getting R&D costs for manufacturers and developers to a reasonable standard, allocate the money to more gaming-focused tech and features, and establish budget platforms for middle-tier and indie games.

Right now I think that would benefit Sony a lot more than Microsoft.

Okay, enough of that. Didn't mean for a derail. Back on track.

That would be collusion which is very illegal. Gamestop matters because they were allowed to buy up all of their competition and force their business practices to dominate the video game retail market.

Companies can't ignore that. Just look at the damage Amazon has caused Nintendo by refusing to directly sell the Wii U and 3DS. Having a shitty relationship with retailers will bite you in the ass.

If it's not significantly over 463K, then yes, 463K is a bad number. The GameCube / Wii never hit that kind of a December low while they were still living consoles.

I know it's bad, but at least it's better than 300k-ish sales that most of us anticipated.

Looks like MSs choice to flood the US has payed off. I figured they'd sell more due to the supply differences. I wonder when Sonys supply will turn around.

When they stop shipping to the other 40 or 50 countries they are shipping to. Remember, xb1 is only available in 13 countries.

Awww yeah, 3DS sales continue to roll, and a nice big bump for the Wii U too. Put more games on the handheld and we will buy them! Give us Next Level Games' new project already. Poor SmokeyDave though, the Nintendo train is too strong :p

Also, congrats to Microsoft for the Xbox One sales, and keeping the competition level, which can only benefit our PS4s.

I guess it depends. I already have the multiplatform games on other platforms. If you bought a next gen console for non exclusives then you could be happy.

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people bought the PS4 for multiplats, and were very happy with it.

I bought a next gen console to drop kick last gen out of my house as quickly as possible and could not be happier.

The exclusives are to be desired on both consoles right now.

Pretty sure by 'best month' they meant in 2013, lol poor WiiU
Based on what? John Harker's been hanging around, and is always quick to shoot down any unwarranted Wii U enthusiasm. If it was under 460k he probably would have said so by now, even if cryptically.

Microsoft focused on their strength, which is the North American market. It's not surprising for them to do well in December when there's so many Xbox Ones available out there today.

Surprised.

Was hoping there would be clear incentive for MS to drop the price. Perhaps things will change this winter/spring.
