NPD Sales Results for December 2013 [Up2: Xbox One/360 HW, 3DS top system of year]

Gran Turismo 5:

November 2010 (launch): 400K
December 2010: 560.5K

Gran Turismo 6:

December 2013 (launch): <180K

Gran Turismo 6's debut is a massive disappointment in the USA. To this day I don't understand why Sony didn't just wait for PS4. It would have been the perfect title to complement the PS4's early lineup and woo key markets.

LOL, I though Vita number were for the whole 2013, but then I realized it was pretty improbable, even for the Sony handheld sales standart.

Dang, poor Vita. Got one last year and it's one of my favorite systems. I really wish Sony would advertise it but guess they don't see a point anymore. We'll, at least Gravity Rush 2 is coming..and hopefully many games will continue to get ported and/or translated from Japan.

I'm really curious to see how a rebranded Vita TV would do here now if advertised well.

Good lord, those Vita sales. I don't think they could have come up with a more unfitting name for a piece of hardware. Maybe they'll get it right with their next handheld and call it the After Vita.

Sony needs to release the Vita 2000 model in USA/Europe. It is one of the main things that increased sales in Japan (it was released last October there). I do not know why they did not release that in December. Vita TV should be released as well. If they just keep riding out the clunky old OLED model sales will continue to plummet further into garbage land.

I meant if they had never developed the Wii U and just kept at it with the Wii. Obviously this was not going to happen, but the Wii has more potential than the Wii U will ever have. And they dropped the Wii after 2010 leaving behind a shit ton of money to focus on a failure.

Still crazy to me that the Gamepad seemed A safer bet to Nintendo than a system built around Motion Plus. Alas.

it's dead everywhere besides Japan, where it's just a bit less dead

I can remember who said it but the other day a 100% reliable poster said is selling better in EU than in Japan. Nothing to write home about, but some steady sales. Maybe someone knows what I'm referring to.

I don't get all the people complaining about the Vita sales, Do you have a product that sells 95k a month?

Greed. I think they under-estimated the 8 year weariness factor.

I don't know what Sony is going to do with the Vita if it gets pulled in the US because that would be a huge blow and they are obviously more western focused these days.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Though not pertaining to NPD results, the following is interesting:

Nintendo of France GM Philippe Lavoue, has shared some 2013 sales numbers for Pokemon X & Y, Wii U, 3DS, 3DS, and Super Mario 3D World.

“3DS: 1 million+ (64% plus year over year) YTD (over the expectations)”
2DS: 180k
Pokemon X and Y: 584k YTD
The Wii U sold 178k in 2013 in France.
3D World: 98k YTD

How much did 3DS sell in the U.K. for comparison, 550k?

France did double damn.

No it's not. Quarterly and basically everything else implies opposite.

I hate to say it, but what's the point at this stage? What do they stand to gain? Just let it drift off peacefully to an eternal sleep, where it can dream of the good times people had playing P4G, Lumines ES and Everybody's Golf. Poor little thing, it tried its best and failed. It happens.

it's not just about releasing new hardware. they need to support it too. show why people would need one in their lives.

i get a feeling the vita division doesn't get a lot of marketing dollars from scea, so their hands are tied.

I remember in earlier arguments over this game a lot of people thought releasing GT 6 on PS3 would result in more money made, but I think we can clearly say that wouldn't have been the case now.

Wow at those Vita numbers. It's dead, gone, buried even. Those GT6 numbers are abysmal too. Sony did absolutely no marketing for these two products and it shows.

I'd really love to see evidence of that. Not that i'm being doubtful on purpose, just curious

Jesus Christ... why oh why won't the Vita sell? What will do it? What black magic is needed to just get people to want it?!

Not focusing on such a small demographic? Axing proprietary memory cards? Games? Marketing?

Just throwing stuff out here.

What they would gain with this move? A mob of angry owners who wouldn't buy anything from them anymore?

A mob? HA! Perhaps a small gathering maybe. I doubt so few that own the Vita boycotting Sony would do much to harm them. You and I both know it'd be far more economical to just scrap it than keep supporting it for the sake of a small handful of fans.

That's pretty good for the 3DS in France.

Sony admitted that they were going to at one point.

Even if they do not pull the plug, do you think they will release another handheld?

Pulling the plug on the Vita will not affect the PS4 sales. They have to be losing a shit ton of money on that thing by now.

I doubt Sony will ever release the Vita Tv now.

Yup terrible, but sort of makes sense.

1) People waiting for OLED clearance sales (to make room for the new LCD slim model).
2) People waiting for the new LCD slim model.

I'm currently in camp #1.

I think those two camps, combined, could have bumped the Vita up to 100K last month. More than that and you're probably kidding yourself.

I'm not sure the slim Vita hitting the US is a certainty at this point--how the hell is Sony going to convince retailers to order the thing?

The Vita sales numbers are really depressing. I only had a Vita for a short amount of time but I loved it and I really think it's a great piece of hardware. I can't wait until I can afford to get a new one but the system really does deserve better. SCEA is just leaving it out to die in the US.

They aren't pulling it. You can expect it to be around for the life of the ps4 as a peripheral that also has some of its own games, thats about it for America anyway. Just like they will continue to sell that DOA camera addon but wont be spending money making games for it or advertising it.

There is no chance whatsoever of another Sony handheld. They might take that division and put them to work on a good quality gaming Xperia Play. Their efforts in that realm so far have been really half-assed, imo.

Nintendo will be the only dedicated handheld maker left, and will have plenty of room to manoeuvre their product. I still think they go uber-cheap with the next one, though. As long as the screen is decent I won't mind.

They did with Wii Mini, but Nintendo is hand tied with Wii U/3DS development, keep developing games for Wii only would to cause make their Wii U game output worse.

So you're saying we should expect that when Nintendo's next console comes out we'll have a 2 year drought again? Awesome way to run your console business!
