NPD Sales Results for December 2013 [Up2: Xbox One/360 HW, 3DS top system of year]

What a crazy thread for such a predictable outcome. Xb1 is big in NA and had no supply issues. Ps4 is supply constrained in the US but airshipped in consoles right before xmas to make it close. The wii u sold decently around xmas because it's a Nintendo machine with 19 Mario games. The 3ds isn't the DS but it's pretty goddamn impressive in a post-smartphone world and the vita continued along exactly the same trajectory it's been in since the start.

There is nothing surprising here. Well, except for 20 pages of people arguing as if any of it was surprising.

As much as I hate to admit it, they would have been MUCH better off just continuing to support the Wii instead of letting the thing just fucking die in 2011 and 2012. Wii U could have definitely waited until 2013, and maybe launch with a decent lineup of games.

I miss the old sega ads lol

This is great. I'm loving the shit talk right now. Really impressive numbers for Xbone, even with PS4 shortages. The thing is $499!

Also, regarding the 3DS life cycle, how was GBA doing at this point in it's life? Some people are saying they could launch a successor in late 2015. GBA had a mere 3 years of life before the DS was released. How were the sales then? Why the decision to release a successor so soon? A 2015 release for the next Nintendo handheld would place it at 4 years after the 3DS launch. After the insane year that was 2013, and if they really are dedicated to this "One Mario Kart, one NSMB per gen" rule, I'm having a hard enough time thinking of big sellers for 2014, let alone 2015 and beyond. What is there besides another Pokemon? Smash Bros? Could EAD Tokyo possibly release a 3D Land 2?

Are you new to gaf?

If people would buy what they want and not care about sales everyone would be happier.

Bayonetta 2 is coming out, it is not going to get cancelled and if the game sells 20 million or 1 copy I am going to enjoy it the same.

Obviously it is better if the game sells gangbusters to keep P* up and running to make more games.

Like I said, hope you are honest, given you are posting in sales thread.

I don't want to blow your mind, but its been out 2 months. I realize you have a narrative you want to stick to, but it doesn't reflect reality. It's been sold out almost everywhere since launch.

I sorta regret not getting one at launch now even though the only use I have for it is this free copy of Just Dance 2014 I got from Ubisoft a week ago

3DS will not be viable long enough to get ~45 million more sales (including this past quarter). It's at 35 million and trending down.

It's probably a chunk over 40 million and is trending (and continuing to trend) comfortably ahead of the PSP. It needs like 38~ not 45~.

WOW, that's absolutely insane. Crazy. I wonder how the Vita SKU did. Probs would have been better to launch it as a Wii U exclusive and port it later

PSP wasn't viable at all worldwide after it passed 30m, but it still managed to more than double that somehow.

3DS can definitely do the same but it depends on how long Nintendo decides to push it before it's successor. As of now it's tracking well ahead of PSP though.

I'm a bit surprised Rayman sold best on Wii U. I wonder if it would have sold a lot more if it launched on the intended launch date.

but it was the last flower of its kind! That has to be worth something, right!? :(

It's worth the world

So who exactly still buys Sonic games? That franchise has always been irrelevant in Japan and it doesn't look that big in the US either. Is it a European thing or something?

When I google'd I found this article from March 2013 saying that 1/3 of game sales on Vita are digital: http://www.computerandvideogames.co...ll-vita-game-sales-are-digital-says-sony-rep/

Perhaps you mixed it up?

I was remembering a little wrong, but at the Sony press conference at E3 2013, Jack Tretton stated that 60% of Vita game sales are made on the Playstation Store. Wouldn't be surprised if it's even higher now as less and less places stock physical copies of Vita games.

You need to look at your own post history sometime. For someone who doesn't care about sales, you seem to pop up in a lot of sales threads.

Lego dun good! Does anyone have the LTD's of Pikmin is US?

These more than 800k buyers of Just Dance 2014 in december alone will buy a Wii U someday?

Haha,,,,

That speaks to how terrible design it. The wii u doesn't even directly build off the casual, fitness audience it's predessor had. So there's no real to move on outside of Mario games.

Nintendo honestly simply better making a wii 2, beek up the wpecs to around next gen level and call it a day.

The retail musing thread was way, way off. Boxes on shelves obviously don't mean zero sales.

yeah but 60% includes digital-only
for games available at retail, it's gotta be lower than that

Andrew House said at gamescom this summer that over 60‰ of the software sold is digital.

Yeh, but..

Plus you've got to take into consideration that number included download only games.

...exactly.
