Can't say I'm surprised at overall sales coming off holiday. The Wii U is back where it was prior to holiday and bundle drops and I can't say I'm surprised about that either. The next major release in Japan is Donkey Kong Country TF, correct? I don't even think it will get much of a boost in sales off of that.

On the basis that the one genre they've got pretty well covered on the Wii U is platformers, I imagine you're probably right.

I've been wrong about this kind of thing before, but I don't imagine a huge upswing for Donkey Kong after 2D Mario and 3D Mario were already on the system recently and not much else has changed since the last one released a couple months ago.

Realistically, earliest Nintendo could do is late 2015 for a new portable. But shouldn't they be dedicating resources to a new console at this point? I feel like 3DS can live longer than Wii U at this point, easily.

I think that if the 3DS manages to snag a few more third party titles and Nintendo throws it a few more titles they can keep it going for a few more years. At least for me personally, I wouldn't want to buy another handheld any time soon. I'm satisfied with the 3DS as is.

Does this mean the Vita card limit was raised above 4GB?

Hopefully, but I suspect they're going to pull a Killzone, which is to say only a portion of the game will be on the cart with the rest being a giant patch.

They need to tighten up their announcement and release times for their HW. A big problem for Nintendo is that they announce it so early, by the time it comes out, the HW is already outdated by a significant margin by retail components you can buy for yourself. If they announce something, it needs to come out the same year.
Huh? That isn't how console hardware works....

I guess price cut plus FFX really is helping. If they can stay on this pace they can move a million a year. Not that great, but better than its outlook was last year.

I sure hope so, it also seems like the Vita is getting the 2013 PSP Numbers as well if you look at it closely. It would be great, the PSP had it's time and now it should just rest and let the Vita have it's sales ^^

¥10-12k 2DS could be huge if Nintendo played their cards right. For the record, the DS never went that low in Japan. DS official price cuts in Japan:

Nintendo DS {2004/12/2} (¥15,000) [never received a price cut]
Nintendo DSlite {2006/3/2} (¥16,800) > Nintendo DSlite {2010/6/19} (open price)
Nintendo DSi {2008/11/1} (¥18,900) > Nintendo DSi {2010/6/19} (¥15,000)
Nintendo DSiLL {2009/11/21} (¥20,000) > Nintendo DSiLL (2010/6/19) (¥18,000)

Exactly. They still have a while to go until regular 3DS hits that $99 price point. Until then, keep pumping out games for it.

Only problem I see is... what can they put out exactly? I'm sure third parties from Japan will stay on board. Another Pokemon would do huge numbers. Majora's Mask remake will do decent. New Super Metroid? Another Mario? Another Kart?

Hard to tell how they fill out 2014, let alone 2015 and beyond. They could continue to go down the list of lesser known Nintendo franchises (Star Fox, F-Zero) but knowing Nintendo that doesn't seem very likely.

The problem with 3DS is that we've no idea what's really coming or not. If there are more core games coming like a new Fire Emblem, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, and so on, I imagine it can still hold up alright. These are all safe bets, but until we actually know what's coming, it's hard to say for sure.

Besides Bravely Second, Persona Q, and Senran Kagura 2, I don't think we really have any idea what's coming out later this year. All of those are relatively small games too.

From what I remember about the info circulating around launch, they do have specs for higher capacity cards. It's probably a matter of cost or/and an early Xbox Life type of situation when every game had to fit the smallest size memory card. Hopefully those hurdles will disappear over time.

Also the KZ patch is only 300MB now. And I don't remember it adding any content missing from the card.

They still have yet to announce Pokemon Z. I don't think Advance Wars would do that great. I think more rpgs would be a good thing. Nintendo should also release Ouendan 3 in Japan. I'm not sure why they're ignoring Quendan :(

Also, keep in mind that the 2DS hasn't released in Japan yet. I can see them announcing a new game and announce a release date for the 2DS at the same time.

I propose new Advance Wars or Fire Emblem :p.

If it follows the trend of the US then no it wont.
It's too early to say. People aren't necessarily going to run out and buy a Vita the week / month after they lay out a chunk of cash on a new console and some games. I know you've already made your mind up but I did mention a couple of things in the PAL thread that might point to a small bump here in the UK, but again, it's early days.

The only way I see PS4 sales effecting Vita is if theres a bundle or Sony does a marketing blitz for the streaming service showing people you can play PS4 games on the go with Vita.

Are there any high profile Japanese games besides FFXV possibly hitting 2014?

With the recent success of Western games, maybe PS4 won't struggle as much as it could have prior to the last few years.

FFXV will not hit this year. Try 2015.

I don't think there'll be much in terms of heavy-hitters from Japan as far as 2014 is concerned.

Yakuza is a strong franchise, but Ishin is a spin-off which has never done as well as the numbered modern-day titles.
MGS GZ is practically a demo.
Even if all the games announced at TGS last year releases in 2014, EDF, Gundam, IDOLM@STER, etc are all either niche titles or new IPs that will not make strides initially.

IMO, 2014 will be leaning more towards announcements rather than releases as far as current-gen is concerned. Any meaty stuff from Japan will only start materialising starting from 2015 onwards.

Didn't Iwata just make a statement about how he gets the japanese market pretty well but doesn't get the western market? These numbers kinda make it seem like he might not get japan either.

Rockstar thinking about making GTA 6 take place in Japan right now aren't they. NA will still eat it up and it might become even bigger there!

I said "possibly" :p
I guess MGS GZ is high-profile but it's too spread. Yakuza also. I honestly can't think of any games carrying the PS4 until the end of the year...

The biggest western games sell a respectable amount in Japan, at the ballpark of 200K and above.

In between those games, and any niche games that hopefully releases this year, PS4 should have enough to not make a fool of themselves.

Gundam ain't niche and its possible for a new Hot Shots golf to also come out this year.

Well, no matter what happens with my vita, Japan will keep it alive n.n

Also, animal crossing should have had DLC/expansion rereleases to keep milking the series on the system. It's been the biggest hit they've had with reaching out to the DS/expanded audience again.

Namco Bandai just announced another Gundam game for PS3 last night. Do you think a Gundam game will come out for PS4 in 2014?

I was surprised Extreme Vs. wasn't a PS3/PS4/PSV game though.

Not true, multiplayer mode was from the start; The first patch was a 100 mb fix, not a whole mode.
I'm pretty sure the launch day patch was over 1GB. Given its size and being mandatory for on-line multiplayer I just assumed it contained all assets for that mode.
Unless you're talking about before launch. I didn't have access to the game before launch so I can't verify if you could already play multiplayer back then.

What Busaiku said.

The franchise isn't niche, but the games don't exactly sell a lot unless they're the Musous or VS.

Yeah I realise that but you just said Gundam hence my response. I guess I should of clarified but games doing 400k+ are not niche.

I had no idea lol.

What is it called?
