Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I saw a new beta client was just released, they fixed the issue with non-Steam game shortcuts.

Ok, so I have to give my honest opinion of the three Pixeljunk games I've played so far, now that I've actually played all of the ones that made it to Steam.

Basically, my feeling is that they suffer a bit from having taken so long to be ported. There's sort of a "moving the goalposts" thing that goes on with indie games, where games that would have been exceptional years ago would probably be considered only decent if they came out today. If Audiosurf came out today instead of years ago, would it have become such a phenom? Probably not.

Take Pixeljunk Shooter, for example. Prior to it, I had already played games like Unmechanical, Waking Mars, and Vessel. So three games that each had some of the elements of Shooter (physics/grappling, extraterrestrial/subterranean exploration, fluid dynamics, etc). Shooter was pretty enjoyable, but I can't say that it really stood out in any particular way, other than maybe the aesthetic (sort of similar to Mutant Blob Attacks).

Eden is a bit more unique and I can't think of any other indie game I've played that's quite like it...maybe that's why it's my favorite PJ game and doesn't suffer quite as much in my mind from taking so long to make it to PC.

I hope work on Pixeljunk 1-6 is going well, can't wait to see a "fresh" PJ game.

I've always been in the beta and this is the first time it gave me issues with something. Could be the beta changes generally don't affect anything I normally do, except in this case.

It's more to to do with the fact that many upcoming services that are not public yet are behind the the 'beta', for most it's just wanting to try out the new stuff.

It's fun seeing features early.

To be honest, in all my time in the Beta program, I've only had to jump out of it once so I don't see it as unstable. Besides stuffing up my skin of course.

It was a bit annoying when Linux support first dropped because the updates were flying through, but essentially access to new and interesting features makes it worthwhile.

Thanks for all the replies :). Sorry for not replying earlier; XCOM EU is still having its way with me.

On reflection I was signed up to the beta for a short while when I first started on Steam last Summer. I left it though after the client was acting up on me and I blamed the beta. In hindsight it might have just been the client being the client so I might give the beta another go when the current woes have all settled down. Gotta keep up with all the cool kids eh? :p

Have you tried activating your Top Gun copy recently? I think a client update this week had a fix related to installing old retail games.

The problem I had with Top Gun was that the inside of the case didn't have a CD key to activate. :(

I just realized I really don't like Blackguards at all.

I love rpgs, i like the really grimdark setting of the dark eye. But everything in this game I just can't summon up the effort to care.

I never thought i'd say it but i found myself skipping past everything and questioning everything in the design. There's too many options where I don't know what the fuck anything really does. Why does it give me two routes after escaping, but once i go to the side route, one of the main route bubbles disappears instead opening up a route farther down the path?

Why is it loading up every single situation? Why is the camera locked? Why does it run so badly? Why do cutscenes just close abruptly and move onto the next situation? Why is the ui on 720p just totally broken, but if I put it on 1200p the whole game is letterboxed? Why are main actions hidden in ring menus?

I couldn't even stomach 15 minutes of the demo before i quit it. maybe i'll try again another time but the whole thing just makes me really frustrated.

Maybe you should check the box again, IT FIXED OLD GAMES.

*checks again* HOLY SHIT
:p

And I finally made it into the Steam In-Home Streaming beta. Nice.

Thinking of hooking up a laptop to a TV for a gaming night with 2/3 other guys and am liking the look of Samurai Gunn but wanted to hear some suggestions for other newish games too.

Nidhogg looks cool but it's only 2 players so I'll probably pass on that.

(07:04:57 PM) stump: quincognito: Prey is very very very very widely available
(07:05:13 PM) quincognito: is it? I want to play it still
(07:05:47 PM) stump: quincognito: pop into steam thread, say "I need a copy of Prey. Can anyone help me out?" and you'll be taken care of within a few days

so, let's find out

I need a copy of Prey. Can anyone help me out?

I liked Guacamelee a lot and the platforming was surprisingly challenging/fun, but I have zero desire to go back and play the whole thing again on hard for that last achievement. Oh, well.

Sorry if it is a stupid question but with streaming:

I have my desktop and laptop up to date.
When I go to the streaming settings page I can "see" the other computer.
I want to stream MGR to my laptop (but it isn't installed there). Now what do I do?

This support article says you just sign in to both computers as the same user, then press play on the computer you want to play on.

I'm not 100% sure (since I haven't done it yet) but I think if you have a game installed on your desktop and you don't have it installed on your laptop, pressing play will start the in-home streaming of that game.

Yep, just got it working.

The trick is it took around 5 minutes for the games to "show up" as playable on the other connected computer (initially everything was grey because it was uninstalled, then suddenly it all lit up). So if anybody else hits that issue where you can't play a game, just let steam do its stuff.

It is actually pretty cool. My whole library is available and MGR loaded up and felt "ok" to play to begin with. However this was over wireless, so I soon hit some major lag spikes which made it pretty unplayable.

I'd say with a proper wired network this will be a great feature.
