That update from Square on IGN is so tip toeing around the issue it's hilarious. Also the article on forbes makes me sad...

" but the idea that 60 FPS is automatically better is misguided.

“Anything running above that is just gravy.”

That’s just the wrong way of looking at your in game visuals. Even though this is the world of tech and we always like numbers to be bigger, frame rate should be a choice, not a constant upward movement. Lower frame rates can help a game achieve a deeper, more cinematic effect, and for games that rely on visual more than twitch controls, this is sometimes the right choice. "
as a pc gamer- nope, more fps is always better. Genre or anything doesn't matter at all, any game feels better with 60 fps, it is not a matter of preferences or anything, it's just a fact.

Wow, almost 3500 posts already.

Alright, here's the deal:

This is fantastic news. 60fps is fucking awesome. But how many PS4 owners knew that already? How many were already sitting there with the previous 30fps news and saying that was just fine and that 60fps didn't matter? Quite a few, I imagine. Everybody who has argued that this 'type of game' is just fine in 30fps is about to get a great education in how 60fps fucking rocks with pretty much any genre. It really does make such a huge difference.

So basically, if you think(now or after you play it) that this is awesome, you'll have a better idea of why PC gamers are always going on 60fps. It really is that good.

Too bad this is just a reworked version of a past-gen game and that 1080p/60fps will not be the norm. But that said, if you find yourself very impressed by this, buy a PC! Seriously, the grass really is greener here. lol And you can look down at this bullshit console warrior stuff and laugh, knowing that this will never be an issue for you.

And yet PC gamers are always in these threads talking about differences between PS4 and XB1 versions of games. Very strange.

The biggest reason this thread is as big as it is is because it's drama. It's a big difference in versions. It's not full of people who have suddenly decided 60fps is the way to go; it's full of people talking about the differences and what that means. I also want to bring up that saying 30fps is fine does NOT mean that 60fps doesn't matter. I like 30fps just fine, but I would never deny that 60fps is better. Of course it is.

Read it again. It says they both can hit 30 fps as their goal and more is gravy.

More than gravy got me confused. I'm not native in english and it made be doubt

The "clarification" means both versions are 1080p/30fps minimum, which is true. The executive producer outright said PS4 is 60, meaning it's covered in gravy.

So It's what I understood between the line. Pretty clever for them to kick off bounds

I'd be in the dick
"Both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience. Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy."

It seems pretty clear. 30fps for both...? Looks like everyone here owes an apology to the guy who said 30fps is better for story telling.
Read the last sentence. The PR quote says that both versions are 1080p/30fps minimum. There will be times where it is above that. EP of the game and those that have played it have said it's 60 on PS4.

Ugh and you believe that?

They don't want to upset the Xbox gamers or Microsoft and say yeah the PS4 version is 60fps but we couldn't achieve that on Xbox One.

Not really no. Both sides have their pros and cons and you would be naive to think otherwise. This constant PC marketing is tiresome to be perfectly honest. Give it a rest..not everyone cares about PCs. Home console market is a different segment in itself. And this comes from someone who was a PC gamer for a long long time before going with consoles.

edit: welp he got banned.

and holy shit this thread has a lot of new pages and banned peeps. All of this is gonna happen again if/when Driceclub comes out as 30fps isn't it? I can just FEEL it

Are we going to have a thread every time a PS4 game runs at a higher FPS or Resolution? Because this is going to happen often, people should just get used to this and move on.

Never played the game before, so getting on PS4. Hope its as good as you guys say it is. Don't let me down GAF.

By the way, can I play it with the kids around (10 year olds) or is this a "mature" Laura Croft adventure? (not that mature)

This has got to be the craziest generation of consoles I've ever seen, and it's only three months in! Resolution: 720p V 1080p (You can't tell the difference), framerate: 30fps V 60fps (30fps is a more cinematic feel). It's quite telling that all of this fuzzy logic seems to favour ONE console.

Still doesn't fix the cliched story and awful dialogue. At least for the fans of the game it does indeed feel like a definitive edition now, well on PS4. Too bad they couldn't pull through with XB1, I mean it surely is capable to do so for a last gen game but I guess it takes a little longer. MS and Sony have certainly swapped places this gen, never thought MS would make hardware that is harder to code for.

People like to talk about technical aspects of games, I think you're the one that's just going to have to get used to this.

It's LARA, not Laura. I haven't played through the game, so I can't comment on your other questions.

Doubt it, but it's still early days of the generation, so it's understandable to expect this type of thing.

Oh come now, you can't honestly believe that 30fps is better than 60fps, no matter what game it is, 60fps is always better than 30fps. I'd rather see Last of us running at 60fps.

Don't do it. Game is very action heavy, there is a lot of gore, and Lara's death animations are insane.

bish is basically the one who deals out the hard shit like bans(I forgot who else does too)

duckroll too I think.

This is going off-topic but here's the deal:

All moderators on gaf have the ability to close threads , move threads . delete or move posts .change thread title's abd of course, ban and permban people .

What makes Bish and Stumpokapow special is that they are System admins .

Apart from all the stuff a normal mod can do they have access to the deeper layers of the site And can give users tags ( Moderators can set their own tag but not those of others but they can request them.

With the handful of 720p XO multiplat titles released like CoD:G and BF4, now that devs are figuring out how to get 1080p native out of the XO, technically wouldn't the gap be getting smaller?

No because Devs could now also be able to frequently reach 1080P 60FPS on PS4, even for big scale games like Watchdogs etc...

With Corrinne Yu in Naughty Dog's Ice Team, I can Imagine the next uncharted being 1080P 60 fps.

Did you actually read the quote without bolding what was convenient?

They were striving for 30, anything beyond that is a bonus.

30FPS will Always Deliver Better Story-Telling than 60FPS in Games – Heres Why

All the peeps of the Gaming World have been going crazy over 30 FPS and 60 FPS standards this last year. From 60fps/1080p being thought the new Next Gen standard to Ryse downgrades. But there a point many people are missing, one which i hope to shed some light on today, the point that why 30 FPS cant and shouldn’t ever be replaced with 60fps.

30fps vs 60fps – The Magic of Story Telling Lies in Lower FPS, 30 FPS will always deliver a more “Cinematic” Experience than 60FPS.

I am of course making quite a bold claim and the burden of proof lies with me. One which i am more than willing to shoulder. Let me begin by saying that the minimum limit that our brain needs to perceive moving frames as a seamless entity ( a video) is 24 Frames Per Second. This is one of the reason 99% of Movies are shot at 24 FPS. Though this was originally due to Sound Hardware limitation of Old Cinema, it has now become the Cinematic Standard. The 24 fps of the Cinema Industry is roughly equivalent to the 30 fps standard of the Gaming Industry. When you see a video shot at 24 fps / 30 fps there are holes to fill and your brain automatically does this by literally creating stuff out of your imagination : also known as movie magic. The More frames you increase, the less you brain fills in, the less the “magic”.

Proof of Concept: Hobbit 24 FPS vs 48 FPS analogy to the 30FPS vs 60FPS Gaming Standard

So, Notice how the 48FPS video looks, Sped Up, Weird and almost too Real (in a Bad Way) ? That is called the Soap Opera Effect. Because we grew up in a world where reality tv and soap operas were shot at a higher FPS our brains are now hard wired to associate mundane reality with Higher FPS. And i think you can see now what i meant by our brain filling in the gaps at lower FPS. The Original trailer looks magical and truly “Cinematic”. Of course you might be one of the minority who actually like the sped up, but in my opinion that is probably because of the Novelty Value.

30fps vs 60fps

The more Frames Per Second we increase in our Gaming Standards the less “Magical” they will feel.
I remember when playing Alan Wake (at 30fps) that it felt unbelievably like a movie to me, the sudden attacks of darkness and the way everything was moving about, i wonder if the magic would have been there with 60FPS. If i could clearly see how everything moved – probably not. Likewise in Cinema the Smokes and Mirrors fall away with increased fps – and story telling is all about the illusion. Of course some games would actually benefit from higher frames per second like Racing Games and Fighting Games (Tekken) but Games in which story telling is a main part would do better with the 30FPS Standard.

http://wccftech.com/30fps-vs-60fps-30fps-better-story-telling-games/

can you people finally drop this "60fps is better" nonsense

Please tell me this is someone's real opinion. That would actually make my day.
