Fighting Games Weekly | Jan 27 - Feb 2 | The Power of Gamers

Once in a while some random fighting game threads are made on here. Reading them has made me realized a majority of the masses have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to fighting games or a particular game and it would take way too much time and effort to respond/educate and correct these posts when said people probably do not care either way.

This would be why I tend to just say a few lines and split.

Is this a reaction to the scolaris thread?

This is why so many good posters stay in Community threads. Too many people either don't read or don't care when an actual good post is made.

YeaH that thread made me sick to my stomach. I feel like some people would enjoy (and excel at) fighting games so much more if they didn't worry so much about character balance. It's such a shallow issue IMO.

I think it's worth worrying about if it can destroy the game. But for most games it rarely does to the point people make it sound like it will.

Well, not that Community threads don't have their own miscreants and Dee Jay players, but it does beat discussing things like you're in Youtube comments.

Gotta love the internet.
Too much spare time.

Those people will never excel to begin with. You know when a fighting game is in early release and a bunch of people clamor about character rosters, their favorites, etc. (You must have, with PSAS) Balance talk is just those casuals trying to pose as competitive players, and they want some guarantee that their favorite isn't getting the short stick. (Even though they'll never get to a level where balance actually affects them)

I always laughed at Jwong for instance, because he used to give BS excuses to why he chose certain characters. It's because he knows the majority of the viewing audience picks characters superficially and not for tactical reasons.

Also, whether it's positive or negative, most people throw the word balance at fighting games because they can't critique the genre for any other redeeming values otherwise.

"I like Marvel because it's really fast and it rewards your creativity"
"but it's not balanced"
"...."

aside from extreme cases like 3s/Marvel, balance isn't that big of a deal.

like I said in the thread, I don't think SF4 is balanced. but it doesn't matter because it's not horribly unbalanced. Characters like Cammy, Sakura and Akuma will allow frauds to place higher than they normally would, but they don't win. At the end of the day, skill determines that. A Vega just won a major less than a month ago.

Same in other games. You can't just pick Team $15 in KOF and expect to win. Or pick Shen/Kim on anchor and expect him to carry you all the time (although they're capable of it)

Well, more than how balanced a game is, how do the matchups play out? Can a player mash their face on the stick and dominate? Is it simply unfun to even try?

So, do you drop truth bombs professionally?

Man Spinal looks really fucking good. Very unique playstyle and tools.

The only thing I don't like about him is that they ripped Jago's windmill sword move for one of Spinal's move as well as the Glacius shoulder ram move. That is lazy as fuck.

Part of me wants to agree with that sentiment, but I have a hard time doing so. If I may, I'd like to ask you a question:

What is your opinion of the cast of Yatagarasu? When I first looked at gameplay for this game, I was initially really unimpressed with the roster, because while the cast had unique aesthetics, their movesets were almost cut and paste from other fighting games. I had same view as you had with those Spinal moves: "lazy".

I was so unimpressed that I ignored the game for a time. Now that the game is closer to a global release, I realize that my initial viewpoint was not fair at all to the actual fighting game as a whole, and I will be buying this game for Xbox One and give it a thorough chance.

Did you have a similar view for Yatagarasu?

Yeah, that is weird, does anyone know if he had those moves in the old KI games?

In KI1, he had the charge move (although he used his shield to charge at you).
Not sure about the other one (may have gained it in KI2)

Yeah. This is how I feel every time new Cave news gets posted.

Who is doing the SCR thread? Any interest in adding a section about what Full Boost is all about & essentially how to watch it? I remember Horseress mentioning it was hard to follow the stream. I could throw something together and put it out for comment in the OT.

HOW TO WATCH FULL BOOST

1. turn on the stream when full boost is on
2. click on the stream chat
3. type "ANIME"
4. push enter

intermediate level tech:

if it's a stream that doesn't let you type the same message multiple times, perform a "mix-up" by adding additional characters to the end of follow-up messages.

examples:

"ANIMEEEEEE"
"ANIME Kappa"

Ben Kuchera from Polygon tweeted the link (to 31K+ followers) about SJ Cage's article on the FGC, sponsors, etc.:

I didn't see too much on this, but I guess there's not really much to say about it.

But he mentioned something that I haven't seen tons of discussion on, so, a few questions:

How would you feel about a fighting game that was 100% online only? Not saying that you have to play online, but you have to be connected for the game to work.

How would the FGC respond to such a game? If it were made by Capcom? If it were SF5? If it was made by anyone else?

How would the masses respond to such a game?

That almost happened with KI.

This is probably the future of fighters if they can figure out a way to make it not suck.

Tekken Revolution is like that. Seems to be doing okay?

I enjoy it, except when the frakking servers are down.

Cause of the Bone? If the Bone had stayed online only, yea, we wouldn't have to speculate cause it would be a reality.

Didn't realize TR was online only, but I guess with the play limit system it makes sense.

Yeah, that is weird, does anyone know if he had those moves in the old KI games?

Yeah, acutally. I recall him having a shoulder charge attack and sword strike. Hell he even had the divekick and skull storing from KI2.

Think it was...Skele Skewer for shoulder charge, Flame Blade for Sword Strike, dive kick was air something i think.

I would not support it. The masses would not support it. The community would fucking destroy it. This /almost/ happened with Killer Instinct.

PS3 froze on me again. Tried restoring it. PS3 froze while it was restoring. Had to format my PS3. Today's definitely not my day. :/

Always online is a value proposition. If you can convince the playerbase that there is a good reason to tie the game to an internet connection, then it will probably work out.

IMO, the only difference between companies/IPs when considering making a fighter always-online is more or less determining how many people will be observing it and how many people will fork over their money even if they don't like it. I think that in general how people feel about the move is going to be the same -- it will depend on how well the product justifies it.

EDIT: I'm not implying that this will be easy, btw. Especially not for fighters.

If it means a free game so I don't get burned on $60 purchases anymore and the netcode is godlike, sure.

If a game costs money upfront, I damn well expect to be able to play and enjoy the game offline and alone, without having to rely on other humans or online infrastructure to get my money's worth.
