I think it will be a system similar to you tube or, even the popular videos section acessible on SKATE or in your browser.

Based on user rateings AND traffic the good content will rise like sweet butter in a churn...

That'll be cool also if Sony have their picks of the week. Maybe they could offer stuff like PSN credit for winners?

I really don't see any reason to believe that there's a mass of casual gamers who are desperately excited to create their own gaming content but held back by interface complexity.

What is the biggest real obstacle to content creation, across all aspects of gaming -- upstart indie developers, blockbuster AAA titles, and custom user-content?

Time. Creating assets (graphics, shapes, etc.) takes time. Arranging them into levels takes time. Testing out each part of your level, and going back and rebuilding it because you did something wrong or it didn't work like you thought it would, takes time.

And the payoff for this creation process is really completion-centric. More casual gamers don't, generally speaking, play games to finish them -- they play them for a while, enjoying the process of playing while they play, and then move on or switch to a different game or get baked and watch MTV.

This isn't a problem in the sense that the infrastructure to do this is really freakin' easy to set up, and it'll almost always bubble a set of good content (not necessarily all of the good content there is, but a set without any real bad content) up to the top.

It could be a "problem" in the sense that, the more work goes into creating any given atom of content, the more that top 10% of good content will be reliant on a narrow set of dedicated, skilled content creators rather than a cross-section of your entire userbase, but I mean... the players will get good content to play either way.

Thank you rational thinking

Bookmarked for potential future lulz.

I think it will sell pretty decently, but not that well initially.
err...you don't think the highly anticipated finale to one of the industry's biggest franchises will sell atleast 1 million in its 1st week, with an international release and a massive marketing push from Sony and Konami? You up for a ban bet? :D

Just picture a white screen on your tv, where a sackboy walks on, looks around, and knocks on the screen or something. People will eat that shit up.
I guarantee you that if my girlfriend sees that commercial she will make a squealing noise so loud it'll make the local news.

The game has the perfect mascots (who could potentially be the mascot of the PS3 itself), can tie into merchandising, and can be so easily advertised as it is community focused, it's cute, you can create, it's accessible.
Sony might want to consider replicating the sackboy customization mechanic as an online flash widget a couple months ahead of release. Go in, give your sackboy a bowler hat, a Poirot moustache, and a monocle and then see the animated result... render it out as a variety of personal avatars.

Shit, I thought Wollan was talking about LBP rather than MGS4. :lol

Nevermind then. :lol

No no, I was absolutely talking about LBP.

Assuming the game has a simultaneous global launch and releases in September:
1 million in it's first week, 2m before end of the year.

In truth, LBP has the same pillars that success stories like Sims, GT, SingStar..etc has and from a 'hope' perspective I'm actually really restraining myself here.

Opps my bad RBH, reading is fundamental and all that.

I think the US sales will be far under Euro and Japan sales, but together, 1 mil in a week is not totally impossible. I really think it depends on the marketing.

Week One Wollan? Yikes. I'd be willing to say, if it launches worldwide in September, it will hit the million mark by December 31st no problem, but I don't know about in a single week, or hitting two by the end of the year. Something about the game strikes me as having long legs and steady sales, not sure why. I also feel like it'll be a major hit here in Europe, without a doubt though :D

We'll see how it goes, but I'm certainly not expecting numbers like that in one week - even if it performs really awesomely, I'd imagine it needs a month or so to hit the mark!

You think Japan will be strong for the title? I've lost all faith in Japanese gamers buying games from the West unfortunately, and think it'll be the weakest territory :(

Speaking of Sony trumping LittleBigPlanet, I wrote a story on Playstation Underground's Gamer Advisory Panel back in October about the appeal of LittleBigPlanet and giving it the marketing and support it deserves. I am sure Sony knew they had something special on their hands with LBP, but I wanted to be sure that Sony understood how big LBP could potentially be.

Here's the story:
I think everyone on the internet can agree that Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet has been the subject of much praise from the hardest of hardcore gamers to the critical gaming press. This is a game that I think everyone can agree will deliver on providing a new and interesting game play experience. The game has so much potential and I think all of us on the G.A.P want to see this title do very well.

However, when I think about how this game will sell, I get a little depressed. Not because I fear that LittleBigPlanet will not deliver, but because I fear that people will not know about it, or know what it is about. I am of course talking about the marketing for this game. I fear Sony will not give this game the huge marketing push it is begging for. Recently Sony has been stand-offish with their marketing. I think that it is absolutely crucial that a title that has the potential appeal of LittleBigPlanet is marketed out the wazoo.

I think Sony needs to pay special attention to LBP and make sure that it gets a Spider-man 3 level of marketing and hype. I am not talking about just basic TV and magazine ads for it, I am talking about expressing what the game is about to everyone in a short and clever advertisement that gets gamers interested, and not just gamers, but as many people as possible. Look at how Halo sells. Halo sells because it has a crazy amount of marketing behind it, and we are talking about an M rated shooter, and it still does those numbers because of its hype generated from its marketing. Halo is no better in quality than Metal Gear or Final Fantasy, but it always sells better because it has a ridiculous amount of marketing behind it. Everyone in the world knew Halo was a big video game, and it was coming September 25.

Now imagine that there is a game with international appeal, and a parent-approved rating that anybody can pickup and play. Now imagine that this game has the marketing that Halo had. LittleBigPlanet could be that game, all Sony has to do is pony up the marketing budget to make LBP a phenomenon. Everyone knows that a game really doesn't sell because of quality, you need to have the marketing behind that quality to truly make a game into something huge.

I feel that Sony should go all out on marketing LBP. I am talking about Halo levels of hype on this title. A fast food deal with Burger King or Wendy's that have cute little Sackboy toys that arrive with the launch of the game. I want to see Sackboy on Coca-Cola cans and on Slurpees. I want to see giant Sackboy cutouts at Gamestops, Wal-marts, Targets, etc. I want to see TV advertisements constantly. I want to see LBP on every PS3 kiosk at every major retailer. I want to see LBP ads in every tech magazine. I want to see LBP sponsor a popular TV show one night. I want to see LBP cameo on a popular TV show. I want to see LBP ads before every Sony pictures film in movie theatres. I want to see Sackboy toys in General Mills or Keloggs cereal boxes. I want to see this done in North America, Europe, and Japan.

LittleBigPlanet looks like it will be an excellent title, but none of that will matter if people don't know about it. Sony Computer Entertainment needs to give LBP the biggest marketing budget they have ever given to a game. I am sure every company would love a "Halo". Well LBP could be Sony's "Halo", they just need to put their marketing behind a quality title and then everyone will be interested. It is all about the hype and marketing to achieve outstanding sales, it also takes quality. LBP already has one of the two, it is up to Sony if LBP will get the marketing it deserves.

So what does the G.A.P. think? Should Sony treat LBP special and potentially reap the huge rewards for it? Or should Sony treat LittleBigPlanet like any other PS3 game and play it safe? Remember that Sony has something very special on their hands with LBP, I think all of us would love to see Sony handle LBP's marketing properly. Speak out people of the G.A.P. I would love to hear all of your thought on this, and I am sure Sony would love to hear them as well.

For what it's worth... I know three people (me included) who will buy a PS3 the day this game is released. This is the only game other than FFXIII / GT5 which interests me enough to spend the money.

I think LBP will be huge, and Sony will be advertising the fuck out of it :D

And when it comes out, I'm buying a PS3 (perfect timing for Valkyria Chronicles too! Score!).

:D I also know my brother intends to get one - my fiancee too was going to but she happened to get one earlier by chance. People who see this game want it, seriously.

good post! Just what I was thinking. However, i do feel that sony needs to do more in marketing their games. Most MSFT top games sold better in the first year than first year Sony top games, and that has to be because of MSFT's better marketing...
So Sony seriously should market their games better this year.

You know, I have waited (impatiently) to get a PS3 since launch simply because there were no must have games. LBP and Home were to be the reason to buy for me.

Unfortunately I could NOT wait any longer and really wanted to play Ratchet, but the point remains, for the last 6 months my driving motivation to get the thing was in a large way LBP's release.

Don't you guys think that its disc only because the amount of space is >=40 gigs? Only two versions of the SKU could even fit that, and 60 gig'ers would be crazy to do that.

What could possibly be in LBP that took the space up to > 40gb?!?
