Call of Duty is annual, rotating between 3 devs w/ 3 year dev time, Sledgehammer 2014

Please change up the formula, and make CoD interesting. I heard rumours that Sledgehammer was moving the series to a more action/adventure focus with their entry. Hopefully this will prove to be the case, and provide some innovation in a very stale franchise.

Not sure I'm going back after Ghosts. It'd have to be the Second Coming at this point. The game was a technical mess.

what if they do a switcharoo on game-play and it plays like old halo, weapon pickups on map, health packs. awe shiiet :O

Does this mean treyarch has been working with next-gen for the longest? If so then i'm okay with it I want zombies to be crazy and insane!

I hope this doesn't mean that people will be migrating from game to game faster.

Longer dev times could help the franchise compete with other games visually/mechanically I'm sure, but a lot of the appeal is a large user base that sticks around for years afterwards.

Sledgehammer?
Aren't they are mainly responsible for the single worst COD yet, MW3?

Ugh.

If it's similar to Modern Warfare 3, count me in.

My favorite Call of Duty game, and it beats COD 4.

Fast paced CQC, small maps, nice variety of weapons, and best of all, the Specialist Class.

So many complaints people had with the game are voided in Free For All, which is the mode I play 95 percent of the time. That game was seriously tailored for my liking.

Count me out if that were to ever happen.

But, COD4 had a mode just like that. No one ever played in it and they never brought it back.

Exactly...I mean its the same turd every year and now they get 3 years to do it. They sell in millions no matter what. Must be nice man.

Salary paid in full and 30 months to work on your game.

You have one job! Do not fuck this up.

It is impossible to fuck this up.

MW3?
You hit the wrong number key there pal

I'm trying to think of one shooter I've ever paid for in my entire life with worse map design, worse emergent strategies over time, worse balancing work, worse PC netcode and online functionality neutering, and a more vicious playerbase than Modern Warfare 2. Nothing comes close.

I kind of envy everyone who loves that game because my first ten hours or so with the game were bliss. It was more Modern Warfare, what could go wrong
Black Ops, MW3, Black Ops 2, Ghosts?

I'm usually sympathetic to how long games take to make but what the fuck takes three years? Must be a bureaucratic hell in those offices. The games use the same ragged old engine with barely any improvements to it, are intensely linear and small with highly repeated assets, and add barely anything new with each iteration. I know games take a while to make but the COD games really don't seem like they should take longer to actually get done than the DLC of most other games.

didnt they tell us this months ago?...like at E3 or something?...or was it just a rumor?...because i was under the impression everyone knew they were going to a 3-year dev cycle...

this is good news for CoD fans, not other way to look at it...its the only way youre going to see larger increases in quality if you want to get a new game every year...HOPEFULLY we can get a new engine for either the Treyarch or IW's next title...as i suspect that the Sledgehammer release in 2014 will also include PS360 ports...to maximize sales potential...

As long as they're good, I'll keep buyin'. I don't play COD multiplayer and I don't get sick of them because they don't run long.

It is kinda sad that most of Acitivision's best devs, IW, Treyarch, Neversoft, Raven, Sledgehammer. are all on 1 franchise now. Can't they have these teams make unique franchises. You would still have a yearly shooter game, but they would be different and allow for more creativity.

sales from a CoD game EASILY will eclipse sales from a different "creative" shooter...

These devs (including IW and Treyarch and ESPECIALLY the others) will almost certainly never make a different IP that even comes close to the sales of the CoD games they have or will work on...

For how long? CoD has an expiration date. The more you abuse the name like this, the faster the decline will be. It needs a tech update more than anything, along with some refreshing new takes on the shooter genre. That's a lot to ask of a game that has historically not strayed far from a formula.

This is great news for the franchise. The 2 year dev cycle wasn't enough time to implement any sort of innovation whatsoever. I agree that CoD is really burning out fast now though. #CoDOverload

How long? For as long as it continues to be the biggest franchise in gaming year after year...

Yes, it needs a tech update, but I can't imagine that happening until support for the PS3 and 360 are dropped...and with the millions of those consoles out there o don't see 2014 being the year that happens...

I don't see what "refreshing new takes" it needs though...

3 year dev time for a COD game? This potentially concerning considering GTAV took around 5 years. And that kind of content is unquestionably unchallenged.

I wonder is Sledgehammer is still making a Sci-fi Cod.
We could see Call of Duty Titanfall this year by Sledgehammer this year, with a 3 year dev cycle, and a single player. Would certainly blow TF out of the water.

Curious to see if the momentum continues.

Regarding Ghosts, I actually thought the campaign was surprisingly decent. I've found most of the campaigns (including Blops 2) to be tiresome and monotonous. Ghosts was the first one where it felt as if there was some semblance of pacing with a mix of loud and quiet moments. The levels also allowed for a decent amount of positioning options with a more aggressive style of play (rather than taking out targets from afar).

It's still a tired formula but I thought it was a decent campaign. :\

This year was the first year I didn't buy CoD , they're gonna have to do something more than rehash the same formula ( only now with 3 studios ) every year if they ever want my money again.

Edit : A sci- if setting would certainly pique my interest.

You mean concerning in that 3 years might not be long enough? You know it used to be (less than) 2 years previously, right?

Big step in the right direction. 3 year development times should be the minimum for AAA games. I hope EA are taking notice (lol, right).

I've been saying I'm done buying these games, but then my friends all pre-order and I feel like I'm going to be left out. Not this year, I'm avoiding this game at all costs. Activision just doesn't know when to stop. We get zero downtime between games and their is no room for hype. I haven't been excited for COD since MW2.

Not that I really know but it must be pretty awful working at any one of those three studios. Knowing you have absolutely no leeway in the production time of a game. The last few months must be hell.

I know this comes up all the time, but, aren't people at all annoyed or just plain questioning of why they feel the urge/want/need what have you to buy COD again?

I mean, I love video gaming. I really think it is great. But even in my favorite genres and from my favorite anti-AAA devs, I would question my and their motivations if a game was coming out EVERY SINGLE YEAR and I had to keep paying 60 dollars for it.

What is happening here?

That ship has sailed. CoD has been yearly since its inception and peaked in sales on its 10th installment.

CoD - 2003
Finest Hour - 2004
CoD 2 - 2005
Big Red One - 2005
CoD 3 - 2006
Modern Warfare - 2007
World at War - 2008
MW2 - 2009
BLOPS - 2010
MW3 - 2011
BLOPS 2 - 2012
Ghosts - 2013
(Sledgehammer) - 2014
(Treyarch) - 2015
(Infinity Ward) - 2016

Activision sure likes to runs things into the ground. Activsions gameplan: Get the money while it's hot!

Anyone remember THPS and Guitar Hero? Just like COD, they once rocked(no pun intended) the gaming world. Where are those games now?

So you got Treyarch, IW and Sledgehammer.

I don't play CoD but reading all these comments people would probably like.

1. Treyarch CoD
2. IW CoD
3. Sledgehammer CoD

Poor sledgehammer.
COD has to crash someday.

It is a smart strategy to maximise revenue. You just need to know when to change it up and when a fad is done. Rhythm games had a solid 4 year run but then just collapsed as they passed out of fashion. I wonder if EA lost money on Beatles: Rock Band since I don't imagine that was a cheap license.

The fact is WW2 shooters were played out so they released Modern Warfare. Now it looks like contemporary shooters are dying out and we are going to see a wave of futuristic shooters. Titanfall and Destiny being the lead games.

I think we see CoD Future War in 2015 if we see huge numbers for Titanfall.

It was enjoyable. A rollercoaster ride but a very enjoyable rollercoaster ride unlike BF4 campaign...

It followed the COD formula but they managed to add a lot more variety into the game without feeling completely forced. And the pacing towards the end was very well done.

Shame the multiplayer is a complete mess. To me it's probably even worst than MW3 MP.

Those games have never compared to the units Call of Duty has sold. I don't see how you can make a comparison on Tony Hawk, it was never a huge hit, just a yearly release.

I really believe COD will never fall, or at least in the near future. If anything, a few fans will leave the series only to be replaced by a younger generation. It's basically become a "FIFA" at this point and still people haven't accepted that.

You better believe Activision will do everything in it's power if it were to ever have a chance of slow sales. They have shown it when they bought their own shares back, and they are showing it now by adding 3 devs into the mix.

You mean concerning in that 3 years might not be long enough? You know it used to be (less than) 2 years previously, right?

No, just the fact that the king-of-all-cookie-cutter franchise wouldn't make a difference between a 3 year cycle as opposed to 2 previously. Maybe I'm wrong.... but can you blame me?

The last CoD I actually enjoyed was the first Black Ops. It was a real bold step for the series I thought (so much so that they toned it down for Black Ops 2). And you could tell Treyarch had fun making it. It was the CoD game where you could stand up and walk around inside the main menu and play Zork for goodness sake.

So I'm disappointed but philosophical that Treyarch isn't releasing a game this year. Should give them time to do something really special.
