Is Nintendo in cruise control right now? What does rest of 2018 hold?

My fingers are still crossed for a new Luigi's Mansion game, atleast an announcement. Its also time Nintendo thinks about throwing down a new Mario Party game, lets hope not everyone travels in the same vehicle again across the board and maybe they go back to something like Mario Party 6 with online play.

Did the 360 have GTAO? Cause the Switch is more powerful that it.
It does have GTAO. The old version of it without any new freeroam events and add-ons, that came out in 2016-2017. Servers still working, but other than that it’s dead. No new content, no content creator, nothing.

Labo is just kind of "huh, neat" to people like us (I mean people who post on gaming forums), but I think it may actually be their big release this year.

Smash for Switch seems like an easy bet though.

Wouldn't mind a Xenoblade Chronicles hd remaster. I think after e3 we can decide if this year is a bust.

I would say yes but not as bad as Microsoft when it comes to this time of the year. My theory is that Nintendo plans to have a somewhat big E3 and release the majority of their major games in the last half of the year. Labo is something they probably threw at the wall hoping it would stick since it is easy to make in great quantities . If it does take off then they have time to take advantage of it for 2018 holiday, but if not they can use it to help with the lack of first party games.

I think that they have everything under control. They manage to have a great first year, and now I believe that they are planning carefully their schedule, considering what third parties might have already planned. Like, if Switch loses momentum they may announce some big title, like Pokemon for the holiday season, else they might hold it for next year and so on.

If there are no major game releases im April and May, basically not having one big game in the first half of 2018, the year already is a bust.

I really, really want see info and gameplay trailer on SMTV.

The recent 4gamer interview makes it sound like they just started actually working on the game so I don't think we'll see gameplay anytime soon.

To add to OP's list, Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire were announced for Switch with Deadfire releasing later this year. No release date on WL2 but I imagine it is also releasing this year. I think Divinity: OS II has a good chance of coming too. The console ports of the first game released a year after the PC versions.

I only got a Switch recently so I'm not in any dire need of games, but I can't say I'm impressed with Nintendo's 2018 lineup from what we know, which is very little+ports.

I mean, game development is a long process, I doubt they planned the Switch to be quite the success it is, nor did they suddenly halt a bunch of a games because it was. They're likely hard at work prepping more stuff, it's just hard to do consistently all the time. It's also February, not exactly a slamming time for any company.

They kinda blew their load already with Zelda. I never cared for Smash or Pokemon either but those are sure to be movers.

I essentially expect similar sales performance as their previous handhelds for the switch.

Future outlook don't look so hot right now. There's some ports of Wii U games, some Yoshi game I couldn't give a shit about, etc...

Metroid needs to deliver. I'm not so optimistic since it's farmed out to Namco but fingers crossed. Other than that, they've lost my interest already.

Gpu strength aside theres still two glaring issues with this argument.
1. Xbox has an intricate online infrastructure that the switch lacks. Specifically speaking online stability (gotta love being frequently disconnected from mario kart 8 and Splat2n despite a good connection...) and the switch lacks a proper online party system which is essential for an online game like gta5.
2. The latest updates were not brought to last gen. They got left behind.

They began the year with zelda and ended it with mario. Within a year they sold more than 14m systems. I dont think they blew their load right away because the gravy train continued throughout 2017.

Well, after the WiiU "event". anything good could be considered cruise control status. They basically can ride 2018 without any great AAA game but we will get Metroid , Dark Souls , and surely new surprises at E3.

They dropped the bombs and 2018 will be abs easier year from a console position perspective

2017 is the transition period, from handheld AA budgets to Switch AAA budgets
basically know they cant do 6/10 metacritic filler games like 3DS had on switch ($10 3month after release Codename STEAM, Animal crossing happy designer, Chibi robo, ect.)

Games take more than a couple of years to make.

Yea the Wii also launched with Zelda and similar success out the gate. However it didn't really provide much for hardcore gamers in the long run.

It'll be different this time because it will have mainline pokemon but that's not for me. I also have zero interest in Yoshi or Kirby. And their cardboard gimmick is definitley not on my radar.

They need more than the usual suspects this time to entice hardcore gamers.

Hopefully they bring back FZERO, WaveRace, Punchout and a proper gimmick free star fox and actually invest in marketing them along with the new stuff for hardcore gamers.

As a hardcore, old school Nintendo fan who has become thoroughly been disenfranchised with the company since the Wii it does feel that after Zelda it's kinda done for a bit.

I'm a bigger Metroid fan than anything but I really have zero optimism for Namco Metroid. :(

I'm going to tell you what I believe. I have no proof, and some of these beliefs may make their way over to social media sites, Gonintendo, and Resetera, etc. I don't care, but I am no insider. These opinions are mine and mine alone.

- Ubisoft Steep is dead, but they are using assets from it to make a new 1080 Snowboarding.
- Shin'en is working with Nintendo to make a new F-zero.
- Diddy/Dixie Kong will be in the new Sonic Racing this holiday.
- We will see Star Fox Zero on Switch, but it will be gutted, corrected and with multiplayer.
- 2018 3rd party will see COD, Fortnite, Paladins, Fallout, Madden among others on Switch.
- Retro's game has a large online component to help drive adoption of Nintendo Online paid service. Especially in the west
- There is a new NBA Jam this year, and hopefully, it will also come to Switch.
- Nintendo needs to move heaven and earth to get Pokemon Switch released in 2018. They will make it, but it may need some major patches in early 2019.

- Microsoft and Nintendo will come to an agreement to either release Rare Replay on Switch or allow some Rare games on N64 Classic.

You'll get another Mario vs Donkey Kong game from NST and like it if you want to or not.

I feel that's more realistic than getting a new Diddy Kong Racing game but certainly no substitute...

I don't view the Switch and Wii being that similar. There was a clear shift in focus to the more casual crowd for the Wii. The Switch actually had a good year as far as Nintendo's output, but I suspect a lot of the games released last year were originally Wii U games held back for the Switch. They've probably burnt through most of those now not leaving much for their second year. I'm expecting mostly ports this year from both Nintendo and third parties.

I think nintendo has found the best of both worlds with the switch. A decent chunk into the casual audience with games like botw, mario kart, skyrim and mario odyssey.

I dont agree with the second part regarding the output of new games for the second year. Kirby and yoshi are not ports and we still have pokemon and metroid to look forward to later on. So far we have just a handful of known first party up ports like hyrule warriors, but frankly the more the merrier. The wii u was a failure, theres no need to let the best games it had die with it.

Mario Tennis should be more than enough to see the entire year through for Nintendo.

Mario Tennis is going to be crazy, you guys

If you cut out the ports from other consoles, how many of the 3rd party titles will be actually a Switch first title?

I'm excited for Mario Tennis, Smash, Animal Crossing and Pokemon.
But even more excited for the indies Hollow Knight, Dead Cells and Shakedown: Hawaii.

All my 2018 purchases will be for the Switch, though I might grab Shadow of the Colossus PS4 when it's on the bargain bin (can't miss out on the best single game on the PS2, PS3 and PS4).

Labo is genuinely interesting, but I think it's biggest succes will be the the "Maker" market.

People wont really want to use it on the switch, because the switch is too expensive and not modifiable enough. But it will really shine when it gets shifted to raspberry pi's.

Despite owning it on the Wii U I still kinda hope that they port over Xenoblade Chronicles X, if they brush it up a little I'd like to give it a second chance.

Pokemon is still rumoured for this year, hopefully I'll be able to make it past the first town this time, the structure of those games is wearing thin.

On the more realistic side we'll probably see signs of Fire Emblem at some point, maybe closer to E3 time.

See now honestly I can see GTA V working on the switch it'll be at a lower resolution, it's on a faster system, I can see it running just like L.A. Noire.

I don't think most people would consider Kirby or Yoshi to be heavy hitters in the same way as Odyssey, botw, Splatoon 2 or even XC2.

Do you really think Pokemon or Metroid will make it out this year? We haven't seen anything at all from either games. Gamefreak hasn't even developed an HD title before and most devs struggle transitioning to HD development. Pokemon is listed as 2018 or later, but I don't see 2018 happening unless it's a rushed game. I would actually prefer they take their time with Pokemon and be a bit more ambitious with the franchise this time around.

For MP4, I'm not too concerned as others are with having Namco develop. Nintendo is probably working very closely with them in terms of direction but with Namco doing most of the legwork. If it was really going to be Namco's take on Metroid, I don't think they'd name it Metroid Prime 4. Don't see it coming out in 2018 though.

Personally, I don't mind all the Wii U ports. I didn't own one and am really hoping they port XCX and the Wonderful 101. Platinum teased both Bayonetta and W101 on Switch awhile ago. Bayonetta came true. Let's hope W101(and W102?) does too.
