If you design your game around 8 core Ryzen with 30fps in mind you will get single digit framerate on Jaguar. What you want to see is the future where developers are still limited by 2013 consoles and just pump resoultion and effect like on X1X right now, just with 12TF or so. I hope devs will just design their engines with much stronger CPU's in mind and go forward.

I have 2011 CPU in my pc (2600k) and it pretty much runs everything at console settings 60fps+, you probably can say something similar about 1 core generation from 2008.

If you design your game around a fast cpu you wont bother optimising the code. Thats how developing games works in the real world.

A Handheld that slots into a VR headset. I see this in Sony's future.

As a second platform or their main console? I could maybe see the former, but they're doing too well in the console race this gen to just chuck it all aside and start over with a VRta, IMO.

Every game on pc and console has to deal with cpu limitations.. and thats almost every triple a title. GTA is still one of the most demanding games on current gen console and shipped on previous gen. This “held back” by previous gen mantra needs some actual evidence more than conjecture that seems to not align with reality. Performance of a game, its AI, and dynamic aspects are related to how good the programmers are much more than the actual cpu. See pubg original preview ( or any other indie preview game) compared to GTA.

Here is how to code and increase performance by orders of magnitude .. this is how complex console games out perform simple pc games.. ie gta > pubg.

PC’s display minimum specs, the minimum increases each year. Consoles don’t have that luxury as they have lifespans of at least 6 years.

They will have 3 platforms that can run the same code (PS5, X3, PC), why woud they want to limit themeselves to dinosaur jaguar cores in ~2020? You have to remeber that CPU power jum from 7 to 8 gen was not big at all, that's why we don't see stuff much more complex than GTA5.

Because they wouldnt want to limit sales of their game to 4 million when they can sell to 140 million.

With that mentality we would still play on Atari. There will be transition period for sure with last gen ports on new consoles (like AC4) but it will be 12 months maximum IMO. All games released on Xbox One X must run on base console as well so both have the same lifespan left.

A cross generation game is not held back unless you think that in an iterative model (which benefits the HW manufacturer the most), see mobile, almost no developer spends much effort optimising for the HW that just got released. Think iPhone 8’s A11 SoC and when it will get titles that can afford to make the assumption it is the minimum spec (add to that increased development and testing specs if you don’t... and then look at OS/SDK new features and the cost of targeting them and testing across devices/OS combination). But at least users have the e-Peen / status symbol of throwing thousand of pounds the manufacturer’s way ;).
Games get the benefit the new specs allow automatic scaling/bruteforced improvements... nothing more. In the case of some games like GTA on new consoles you went from less (not in PS3’s case) yet much faster CPU cores to more cores that were considerably slower (faster per clock, but not enough not to make improvements in scaling unnecessary). You got a game taxing the CPU then and essentially not going much further in CPU power this generation you still have. Sport taxing the CPU which is not surprising.

The PC model in the last 15-20 years benefited greatly from console generations as developers were able to push quality higher more cheaply as PC HW soared above the console HW over time (and consoles could not compete on the Watts race especially GPU wise).

The things that confuse me the most about the call for iterative HW releases much more frequently (and with mandatory forward compatibility) are HW doubling performance at a much slower pace year after year and the situation getting worse (the time between performance jumps and the cost to achieve them is increasing... how can this call for more frequent HW releases?)... little to no benefits and some actual negatives over maintaining the consoles generations model (with Backwards Compatibility support) unless you have perverted dream of doing what Apple does and reaping Apple like profits automagically...

I do not see why when you can already buy a PC and connect it to a TV you would want to transform consoles into a restricted PC with the limitations of either model and none of the benefits (you cannot change your GPU or CPU in an modern mobile phone or in your mid generation console making people dream of iterative hardware). The handwaving explanations of this with “choice” “but come on PC’s lead the way” “omg think about a new more powerful HW and the games!!!!” feel equally shallow.

Put RDR2 on Xbox One and PS4 and remaster it on Xbox Two and PS5 and then in a few years make an exclusive GTA6 only on Xbox Two and PS5 and sell gang busters...

( the pc isnt a true 4k machine .. i think u mean a 1080ti is a true 4k graphics card but whatever lets not get off track i was only pointing out graphics means something to me.. personal preference)

So you finally admit the xbox one x isn't a true 4k console. And you're wrong about PC not being a true 4k machine, you don't need a 1080ti for ultra settings. A 1080 alone can do 4k resolution with Ultra settings minus the 60fps average but holding its 4k resolution without being dynamic. And.......I've been playing 4k before a 1080ti came out with my dual 1080.

I guess we can continue to have options like we have now (in some games) with the mid-gen refreshes, but the next gen options would be Quality (native 4k) and Performance (CB 4k) , this doesn't necessarily means 30 vs 60fps, since that is more related to CPU, more like normal 30/60 fps with drops vs locked 30/60 fps.

Btw others have been saying a 1070 or even a 1060 is what you need for 4k lol..
Totally depends on the game..

PC is the only native 4K machine becouse you can set uncompromised 3840x2160 (5120x2160 in my DSR case) in (almost) any game, on consoles you're limited to what developers wanted (1440, 1800, 2160c or so). Framerate and settings depends on hardware performance of course.

My theory is...is that Take Two looked how well sales did for GTA 5 and the amount of double dippers across gens and are going to try to replicate that with GTA 6. ie release on Xone/PS4 at the end of their cycle then re-release an upgraded version on PS5/Next Xbox at beginning of their cycle.

I want Sony to get into the same idea that Nintendo is doing which means hybrid consoles. You can have a home console that has a base where you put in the handheld console and the base generate the power. At this point it's going to be PS5 vs Switch. Sony is not dumb they know this is the gaming everyone wants. People want options to pick up their game and go. If you don't like that then you can easily just leave the handheld in the base and never take it out. I'm sorry I want Sony on the go gaming. Can you imagine being able to play ps4 games on the go? Sure they won't be full HD but they will be playable.

Thats because pc is more open and hands free in terms of building from scratch or upgrading. You can have a 4k ready machine if youre willing to spend over $1,000. You get what you pay for. But not everyone wants or can throw money at a system like that so consoles are and will always be the cheaper, user friendly plug and play alternative.

Just a quick correction since the one is technically xbox 3. (xbox, xbox 360, xbox one)

I bet at least the next Xbox will be backwards compatible .....

I think both consoles will be backwards compatible especially, as someone quite smart reminded me of it, it is the only realistic option for both (the console makers may see it as a lose-Lose scenario depending on what they do about BC... implement it or not...) as we sell so much software digitally and the value digital libraries have for people.

Still, some people may still decide to buy the remastered edition if it gets enough of a graphical update and maybe some new exclusive features.

I played Half Life 2 on my I5 6200u laptop at 4k connected to my tv just out of curiosity and i was surprised how well it ran.

Wouldn’t that be 3+ years away?

Probably yeah, 2 or 3 years. Rockstar aren't going to want to release a huge game like that on a small next gen user base. They could go cross gen I suppose, but I would guess the game is fully in development right now with the Jaguar CPU's and current console tech firmly in mind...

Besides, a next gen console really needs 7nm silicon to get a big enough performance jump. This tech will first come to market in later 2019. A PS5 silicon design for release in holiday 2019 would need to be finalised and tapped out in early 2019. Which to me makes the idea close to impossible.

I think the absolute earliest a next gen console can release is 2020, but quite possible to be a year later than that IMO.

Not sure this is quite right? Take Zen 2. AMD have said this first 7nm design is complete=tapeout and will now "spin" at the foundry to iron out kinks and fix any issues. I doubt Zen 2 will launch to consumers until ~April 2019 so lead time is well over a year.

For PS5 I expect tapeout would've already happened for a late 2019 launch and will happen in the next few months if late 2020. Lead time , lead time, lead time.

Did I mention lead time?

Yeah but AMD themselves having the first one off the production line is different to them having the tech available to offer external parties in a ready to go APU design. They can't really be selling it to Sony before they have proved it themselves. Plus Sony need the hardware design locked in 12 to 18 months before actual release.

We had all this talk back in the day about the Scorpio using a first gen Zen, just because the two were releasing in the same year. Yet later we find out that the Scorpio APU was simulated way back in early to mid 2016, before ZEN even was available to consider. Hardware products need a decent time in the oven so you cant just look at release dates of tech and compare like for like. It doesn't work like that.

Plus consoles aren't the only ones wanting new tech. The big boys like phone manufactures usually get first dibs on the latest tech in it's launch year. Products which are sold for big profits. Consoles come after when yields are much better because the process has matured.

Apple could use this next gen opportunity to make an handheld/hybrid console that sell more than Switch and Xbox and makes more money than PlayStation. GameOS will be the operating system. Microsoft quits gaming.

Apple has a gaming console its called the apple tv, they show it with games in every Apple store. They also have a “hybrid” device called the ipad, uses Airplay to send a second screen to the tv and for years has supported 1080p 60 fps. Microsoft have no intention of leaving gaming with 35 + million consoles sold ( thats still 3x the switch and about half ps4) and an activly growing win 10 store.

I think we agree, I was just pointing out in bold that taping out wouldn't be in early 2019 as you said it would, it would be much earlier.

I disagree about AMD giving Sony first dibs though. Mark Cerny has said in interviews how wonderfully collaborative they are and how having new features "battle tested" in a console first helps them. The reason the current consoles stuck with Jaguar is they are still PS4 and Xbox One.

Theyll just make it cross gen, theres no reason why they cant, cpu aside next gen will still likely be the same architecture for easy development and im certain sony would use it as a heavy marketing tool for the ps5 sometime between 2020-2021 but i seriously doubt sony would wait just for gta.

Sony said they have to be aware of Nintendo for next gen, it's only because Switch sales seems to be gearing up to take second place this gen, yet, I don't think Sony means that they would venture in Nintendo type hardware or even a handheld......I think their focus on next gen will be services, so they will improve PSNOW, they will improve remote/share play so you can play your titles on your mobile, though they're already doing that or did that this gen. I think also they will be poised to really make VR take off to the mainstream, it's a relatively good market for them this gen, but with potential hardware to give us 4k 120fps or 240fps vr games, that's an avenue for some very nicelooking vr games and a runaway hit that will get everyone talking and wanting to play VR......Something like Forttnite with a Drake PUSH ontop.....

This is a bad idea. They can’t compete with nintendo and now they have competition from mobile. If they go the same route as nintendo, their hardware will be so underpowered that people will go towards xbox as the sole HD console. Its better for them to win the HD side rather than losing on both ends.

Yep, Nintendo ip’s can work on lower spec’d hardware due to the art style used. Sony would have to ditch their existing ip’s and create new ones to compete.

Im glad for you that you have a graphics card thats twice the cost of an xbox one x. Thats certainly not the experience most pc players have .. you have the 1080ti experience with a computer presumably that cost 2k .. did u get water cooling as well?

Why is there a X1X console war inside the ps5 devkit thread? What the X1X does or not is not relevant for this thread.

Split RAM dedicates bandwidth seperately to the GPU and the CPU. You can pick RAM that you know works well with the GPU and then do the same for the CPU. The PS4 struggles badly with anisotropic filtering because of its RAM configuration. The GPU and the CPU have to share the same bandwitdh and GDDR5 isn't really the best for CPUs, that usually prefer low latency over high bandwidth. So there are pros and cons to having a unified RAM in a console.

It was most likely an API problem, because the Xbox One had better AF most of time and that has way less bandwith.

Also about latency. I know it was a narrative that Microsoft pushed when it turned out that the Xbox One X only uses DDR3 vs. the GDDR5 in the PS4.

But it's just not true. The main latency is CL (cache latency) which tells you have many clocks needed until the first byte of the requested data arrives from the memory.

Now a DDR3 RAM is about CL10 and a GDDR5 is about CL20 so yes, the double. But look at the clocks: the DDR3 2133MHz in the Xbox One and the GGDR5 5500MHz in the PS4. More than double. So that 20 clock latency will take a less time.

I believe because one poster argued that the PS5 will be barely better than the XBONEX and that next gen launch games will be hard to distinguish from this gen's anyway......Ha ha, something to that effect........which is why when you put things into perspective, the XBONEX only has three true 4k games (Forza, KI and Super Lucky) and super Lucky is not even a locked 60fps, has many dips here, with tearing, as low as 39fps...So i'm really not seeing how a PS5 that will actually be a true 4k machine, with 4k assets across the board, is going to have games looking similar to this gen's games or similar to the XBONEX for that matter.....

While I don't doubt they are R&Ding stuff (and likely have been for years already), I don't buy PS5 appearing anytime before holiday 2020. Now is the time for Sony to make money, selling softwareto the huge userbase, which I think they will want to do for at least two more holidays, especially since a lot of them are pretty newly engaged customers with PS4 Pro purchases made in the last year or so.

Once again with the blatant missinformation ... console war posting. Rotr gow and destiny 2 “However, based on our suite of Destiny 2 stress tests, we couldn't get the dynamic scaler to kick in at all, Xbox One X sticking hard and fast to its target resolution.” all run at true native 4k without droping a frame.

My point was which of course many people have already agreed with is that with xbox one x already running so many games at 4k or near 4k. How is the ps5 going to differenciate itself in the market? If the ps5 goes for true 4k 60 fps it will need over 2x the tf to have the same graphics. Its likely to be about 10tf.

What do you thinking the marketing will be pushing?

It's easy, games will just look better. Before PS360 era resolution differences between gens were minimal and all that power increase went to graphical settings, it will be the same with Gen9+ (I hope 8k won't steal the power of PS5 Pro :p). Difference won't be as big as between PSX and PS2 of course but it will be there.

This is the very definition of disingenuous.

I only have a (slowly dying) base Ps4. Right now my main interest in the Ps5 is to play the Ps4 games i am going to miss in these next 2 years (hopefully with enhancements, like better performance, AA, etc), this assuming it has BC, but it would be crazy not to have BC if they keep the same architecture.

Ok so I used console exclusive games only, but if we want to go that route......The PRO has

Wipeout
Everybody's Golf, MLB The Show, Kingdom Hearts series
Ride 2, Hatsune and Vanhelsing Series
TLOU
The Witness

BattleBorn
Berzerk
Skyrim
Skyrim online
Ezio Collection
Fifa
Wheels of Aurelia
Thumper
Futuridium
Neon Chrome
Rez Infinite
Viking Squad
NBA 2k, PRO Evo etc....

I'm pretty sure, most of these which are also on XBONEX are native 4k, but in no way does this say PS4 PRO is a true 4k machine. It's definitely not across the board and in no way will it be comparable to 4k native offerings on a PS5, and neither will the XBONEX which happens to have less native 4k games than PRO at this time.....There is just no way we can make a connection to the quality of these 4k games to what we will get on a PS5 as PS5's games will be built with 4k in mind and have the power to do so across the board....With ambitious games, not just indies, remasters and low GPU footprint games....

No point in arguing lies and list wars. You know the truth, but choose to twist facts to fit the agenda. Enjoy that.

All I want is Ray-Tracing acceleration hardware on the SoC & maybe some NFC/RFID tech on the console or controller for some non-gaming / casual craziness

I wonder what MS is doing, everyone assume that after X1X they won't go first to the market. Problem is, X1X is never going to be a big seller and they are not making any new exclusives for the console.

No way the then turn around and make "another" console if the X1X doesn't sell well over the next year. MS's investors would hate that.
