1 week out, what are your expectations for Star Wars VII, on a personal level?

My hype level is through the roof after seeing the chinese trailer.

IMO this movie looks like a worthy successor. The Art, Characters, Locations.

Like someone said, it has heart again. Fun dialog.

Some people will never be pleased.

Surprised with the low expectations. Everything we've seen looks great so far; at worst it will be good and at best the most solid and well rounded Star Wars movie made yet.. maybe even the most fun.

I understand the skepticism considering the last three entries, but I'm more excited and hopeful about the franchise than I've been since I saw the originals as a kid.

Plus, we're getting brand new John Williams music, and lots of it.

There's no way in hell the movie will surpass A New Hope and Empire on any these fronts. Big filmstudios nowadays don't have the patience to make movies that are paced like those two. A New Hope and Empire are pretty slow movies that take their time to set up the locations, characters and story and only use big action scenes when absolutely necessary which makes them memorable. The trailers for Force Unleashed already showed at least three big action scenes on three different locations.

That's how marketing works though. I mean, they've barely showed the movie off because they don't want to spoil the experience for anyone. While that's definitely something I appreciate, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions and a LOT of unknowns for anyone to soundly have a strong opinion one way or the other.

I expect 1) lasers, 2)space ships 3) hokey shit, and 4) hopefully to be entertained. The prequels had 3 of the 4. They forgot the most important one.

I'm not a Star Wars nerd but I enjoyed the OT quite a bit as a kid. They aren't amazing films but they are entertaining. So that's all I really ask for the new ones. Just make them worth watching. They don't need to be anything special and I don't expect them to be. Just be fun. Please.

If I waste 10 bucks again watching shitty Star Wars movies... how's the saying go? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 4 times... well umm, hmm.

When should we expect reviews to start pouring in? From my understanding Disney isn't showing early screening for critics but maybe I had that one wrong.

According to IMDB the LA premiere is this Monday, then a couple more in Tuesday and then wide release in Europe on Wednesday.

When's the embargo (if there's any) for reviews lifted?

Awesome scenes, mixed with awesome music.

I'm really interested in how that scene with Kylo in the rain with the other knights plays out! That scene got me hyped in the trailer, probably mainly due to the music haha

I expect it to be full of solid plot, character development, and directing- or in other words: it will have what the prequels really needed.

Lightsaber action, at least one great space battle, and some awesome use of the force to acquire a beverage from afar. Hehe

Man it's gonna be fun.

Enjoyable, but slightly generic blockbuster with a non-stop score and unnecessary CGI here and there, with added (also unnecessary) references to previous films in the franchise almost breaking the fourth wall. Cliff hanger finish. Something like someone will be dead or appear to be dead only so they can triumphantly return on the 8th episode a-la Gandalf.

I expect it to be a fun summer blockbuster type movie just like the original (even though its releasing at Christmas).

Lots of laughs, likeable characters, breathtaking action but just serviceable acting, story and script. Im also expecting heavy nostalgia and fan service to the point where it almost feels like a remake/reboot. Im actually worried that some of the similarities to Episode IV will be a little too heavy handed.

What I'm not expecting is anything particularly compelling in terms of the storyline or any great plot twists. If anything in the movie surprises me in terms of the storyline then I will be really pleased.

Overall I think this will be a good film to set up the new era. Will give us just enough to be satisfied but won't be so good that the sequels can't really ramp things up.

I'm actually a lot more excited for Rogue One as I'm expecting that to be something truly different from the usual Star Wars movie.

I expect it to be a fast-paced, generally good-natured action romp like JJ's Star Trek movies with a lot of excitement mixed in due to seeing the old guard of actors returning.

Should work out pretty well in terms of entertainment value.

Even if it's "just" a solid Star Wars movie, I will love it.

What do you think were the intangible factors that kept the OT from becoming a wreck? Many people felt that Gary Kurtz, Marcia Lucas, Irving Kershner, and Lawrence Kasdan were what made Star Wars and Empire grounded in focus, and that their absence in the prequels were evident in the bad acting and writing.

MI:3 is the only JJ Abrams film I have seen, so I have no frame of reference to draw from in predicting how this film will play out. Alot of us are being cautiously optimistic for Force Awakens. But aside from Abrams, what powerhouse team is in play for Force Awakens and beyond in the same vein as Kurtz, Marcia, etc?

An epic tale that will fill my life with meaning and reawaken my dead emotions.

It'll be a fun sci-fi fantasy movie that's hopefully be as good as the trailers make it out to be

I don't really care. I was a huge Star Wars fan as a kid. I collected the toys, could recite most of the lines from the original trilogy, and loved lightsaber fighting with my little brothers. The prequel trilogy pretty much killed my passion for the series, and the movies lost their magic. I watched episode IV the other night for the first time in years with my gf who has never watched any of them and I found it really hard to disagree with her many moans and complaints.

Star Wars doesn't mean that much to me anymore, other than as nostalgia. I'm going to catch the Force Awakens when it is free on Sky.

I liked the Startrek reboots, they had soul. Plus I'll make sure I have a few drinks under my belt and take some into the cinema to make sure my overly critical brain is switched off. Yep I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Also it helps it is following an awful prequel trilogy

It's probably going to be about as good as Star Trek 2009, which is perfectly fine by me. A fun popcorn blockbuster with great effects and witty banter.

Star Trek Beyond trailer is THE reason I am going. Cannot wait!

As for the main event as some would call it... I am most interest in seeing Luke's reveal.

Haha, this. I'm easily more excited to see Star Trek Beyond's trailer.

I think I could probably guess the plot beats to the new Star Wars based on what they've released. I look forward to seeing it but after watching the original trilogy, I'm not under any delusion that those were fantastic movies.

It will be enjoyable, but I have a feeling that I will just think, "That's it?" after it's over. I'm not sure what a satisfying conclusion to this movie could be since it's basically there to kick off the onslaught of Star Wars media we will get for the next decade.

I think it will be a return to form, but not live up to the levels of the original and Empire.

I'm also expecting...some kind of Prequel Triology side note somewhere.

I'm really surprised by what I'm writing because I don't care much about Star Wars but I actually had a dream last night that I saw it. It was a very, very simple film where someone was trying to get a rocket mission off the ground...maybe a team of people? I remember it was kinda Lost-esque and really unexciting compared to what people were hoping for. I don't expect this will be reflected in reality at all. Especially since the movie in the dream didn't have anything from the trailer or even anything like the content from the trailer in it. Basically it was just weird that I dreamt of SW at all.

I think it will be good but leaving me desperate for more.

Afraid I'll get spoiled before seeing it on the 19th. 2 days....

I'm trying to lower my expectations as much as possible. I went apeshit over the trailers, but I'm sure the movie (allthough it's probably going to be good) can't ever be as good as the hype.

I'm actually preparing myself for a new Jurassic World. I enjoyed that film as a Jurassic-fan, but can't say it is super great. I think it is the safest attitude to go see the film at the moment.

It helps the latest Chinese trailer has some wonky delivered dialogue (probably due to editing totally different pieces of dialogue together).

Also, I was planning on going on opening day next wednesday (EuroGaf present!), but can't as I have to leave for Tokyo the day before for work. So I'll probably have to wait another week (unless I can catch it in Japan). It will maybe be hard to avoid spoilers (I can see memes creeping up immidiatly on facebook and shit), but it might also be good to lower the expectations.

EDIT: I'm also a bit affraid of the nostalgia factor. Sometimes I get the feeling the movie tries to copy as much stuff people liked from the OT as possible, with maybe some cookie cutter sequences too. Just like JW did at times.

I'm expecting it to be the best Star Wars movie, but that's mainly because I'm not a very big fan of the other Star Wars movies.

I'm expecting a JJ Abrams flick which ensures some basic level of satisfaction. Now, the excitement levels for not being bombarded by Star Wars ads anymore is off the charts. Guaranteed satisfaction.

A few years ago i dreamt i was watching a Luke Skywalker spin off movie, that was gonna be released before the next "real" star wars. This was way before i knew there was actually a real Star Wars VII being made

Luke had a dark spaceship in my dream

I think it'll be fine. My main worry is being spolied before I can see it. You know people are going to be making memes, posting quotes, and all of that good stuff on facebook

I expect a fun sci-fi romp with a band of likeable characters that is reasonably well written and doesn't try to explain itself too much or become too convoluted. I expect the torch to be passed down from the old cast to the new in a satisfactory and emotional way. I expect it to look, sound and feel like Star Wars - a "lived in" Universe that feels old and tattered and tired from a conflict that has dragged on for generations. I expect pangs of nostalgia and excitement for the future. I expect a space fight that feels like a WW2 dogfight. I expect a heavy and brutal lightsaber duel. I expect a fast paced escape sequence. I do not expect it to take itself seriously.

I expect it to be better then A New Hope, but I do not think it will topple Empire as my favourite.

Honestly, I'm expecting a fun and enjoyable movie. I'm not expecting anything on level of Empire Strikes Back, but if it does get to that, awesome. If not, I enjoyed myself.

If it's on PT-levels though, we riot.

I haven't watched a trailer since the second teaser aired which has really tempered my expectations. So if it isn't that great, I probably won't be very disappointed.

I started going on media blackouts (or just not seeking out new info at least) when Intersteller came out. While everyone else was kinda let down from the hype, I was completely surprised and enjoyed it immensely. This will be the second film I try this approach with, we'll see how it goes.

I just want it to be its own thing. Hopefully it doesn't ape the OT too much and the cast, settings, action, and music are unique enough to be memorable in their own right.

I was 12 when III came out, and don't think I even cared for that one at all. I'm going to watch VII and enjoy it with my GF, but I'm not expecting the best movie of all times.

I'm not very into the Star Wars universe at all apart from the usual stuff that is ingrained in human culture forever, so I might be the average young-ish viewer.

I'm not going in to see whether it is a "worthy" successor or anything, I'm just expecting a fun, entertaining and possibly silly sci-fi fantasy movie.

Lower than they were a month ago. The disappointment of Battlefront killed my hype a bit and reminded me that I'll never be as big a Star Wars fan as I was when I was a kid and, moreso, that this is a perfectly healthy thing.

Expecting to have a fun couple of hours, but to find it ultimately forgettable.

I expect it to be decent/borderline good.

They picked the perfect director for the material, but I have such a disinterest in Star Wars that too much pandering would make me leave the theater with a bad taste in my mouth. Love Abrams, love what he did to Star Trek. If he can make me like Star Trek, then maybe he can make me like Star Wars?

I dunno, but he's already done the impossible so maybe he can do it again!!
