At level 2 on the Torino scale, it's at the highest hazard level of any asteroid ever. According to Slashdot, however the asteroid has been upgraded to 4 on the Torino scale, with a 1 in 62 chance of hitting earth. It would release energy equivalent to a 1900 megaton explosion; the largest nuclear device ever tested on Earth was 50 megatons..

..Happy Christmas GAF!

Sing with me people.....

I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While youÂ’re far away dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure

DonÂ’t want to close my eyes
I donÂ’t want to fall asleep
Cause IÂ’d miss you baby
And I donÂ’t want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
IÂ’d still miss you baby
And I donÂ’t want to miss a thing

Lying close to you feeling your heart beating
And IÂ’m wondering what youÂ’re dreaming
Wondering if itÂ’s me youÂ’re seeing
Then I kiss your eyes
And thank God weÂ’re together
I just want to stay with you in this moment forever
Forever and ever

DonÂ’t want to close my eyes
I donÂ’t want to fall asleep
Cause IÂ’d miss you baby
And I donÂ’t want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
IÂ’d still miss you baby
And I donÂ’t want to miss a thing

I donÂ’t want to miss one smile
I donÂ’t want to miss one kiss
I just want to be with you
Right here with you, just like this
I just want to hold you close
Feel your heart so close to mine
And just stay here in this moment
For all the rest of time

DonÂ’t want to close my eyes
I donÂ’t want to fall asleep
Cause IÂ’d miss you baby
And I donÂ’t want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
IÂ’d still miss you baby
And I donÂ’t want to miss a thing

DonÂ’t want to close my eyes
I donÂ’t want to fall asleep
I donÂ’t want to miss a thing

Someone call Ben Affleck, this time, we'll make sure he's the one that stays to trigger the nuke.

So does that translate to we will all died fro this one hit? Or just half the planet will be blown away?

Apparently it wouldn't be an earth destroying event. Probably the biggest catastrophe in recorded human history, but not one that would wipe out civilisation. If it hit an ocean, apparently it'd create tsunamis, if it hit ground..well, I'm not sure, I guess it'd be devastating for the surrounding areas =/

I am actually kind of afraid... we obviously doesn't have the neccesary technology to destroy such asteroid even in 2029. I do not want a huge catastrophe to happen on Earth while I am living.

If it hit Africa would anyone notice?

Uh, yes. Unless of course you're really ignorant. I'm sorry but I find no humour in this "joke". Africa is in really bad shape man, it's a sad situation and I find nothing funny about it. *shrugs*

So this 'cloud' is 1000+ times bigger than earth itself?

Not sure. I would have thought it might be 300 times the size of earth for a 1 in 300 chance of impact, or 62 times the size of earth for a 1 in 62 chance of impact.

I'm kind of wondering though - if it gets within a certain distance of earth, would the earth's gravitational field pull it in? or pull it in to orbit? Might that shorten the odds of an impact further? Probably is a silly question, I'm not very knowledgeable about these things.

Oh I see, it is the blue dot?

I think that's their "current best guess" which they admit themselves is probably highly inaccurate.

So I have 25 years left to conquer the world...

Well it'd be pointless conquering the world in 2028, you'd get no time to enjoy it. I'd say you have 20 years max.

Hah, I was just going to work out if it was a Friday.

Surely within 25 years we could come up with some way of diverting it/destroying it.

Sums up my feelings perfectly.

Hopefully, I'll have great-grandkids by then

Oh, lighten up! Rampant AIDS, civil war, and devastating poverty :lol :lol... how is that not funny?? :lol

iapetus: *LOL*

What would be interesting if it missed Earth, but a lot of associated debris hit Earth...and then it creates a field of energy that lends electronics obsolete, so we'd have to go back to the olden days and our technology would be equivilent to 300 years ago.

Sweet.

Maybe Barry Bonds will have had enough steroids by that point to hit it back into outer space?

Latest reports over at slashdot indicate that it's expected to land right on your head.

;)

By then I will be 44 and be more concerned about looking like a MILF instead of worrying about some asteroid that will never appear.

I wonder too...

We have posters from EGM, EA, the CIA, etc...why don't we got anyone from NASA? :P

I'm kinda excited. If it hits us, ok, we're pretty much toast, but if it misses it's gonna look really cool. Hopefully by then I can afford a 35 terapixel camera.
