1Up: 10 Ways Xbox 360 Changed Gaming

Technically anything higher than 480p should be considered HD, and yeah, resolutions below 720p is horseshit, but I'll take what I can get on my console as long as it still looks good.
Dude, 480p can still look decent enough. But don't call anything HD unless it is at least 720p. The term is confused enough already.

this.

first page is just full of 'baaaaaaaaaaaaaah".

Even the most dyed-in-the-wool console warrior should be able to admit that "after all, what's the point of teabagging your friend in Halo if it's not presented in stunning, 1920x1080 resolution?" is a hilarious sentence.

Also, let's not forget the nearly ubiquitous advertising in the GUI.
The constant pushing for a gold subscription all over the place is understandable, but also incredibly annoying. The 360's "free service" interface is like some kind of advertising ghetto, where at least 1/4th of the content or more requires a gold subscription for access. Sure, you can download Halo Waypoint, but it sure as hell doesn't serve its real purpose if you don't have Gold.

The constant stream of advertising on multiple slides would be more tolerable if the design in navigating the menus made some sort of attempt to achieve elegance.

I feel like the only thing that the 360 really has going for it is cross game chat and the controller for shooters.

Did people read the article? They directly reference the PC and how the XBox incorporated those things.

Poor title choice indeed on their part. Although the pixel counters do have an argument about the whole HD thing.

If it wasn't for the evolution of Xbox Live, I wouldn't own 90% of the Xbox 360 games that I do, I wouldn't have gotten ~£200 of free content thanks to MS Points and importantly, PSN would still be fucking garbage. I know that article breaks down some of those Xbox Live benefits into smaller bullet points but Xbox Live as a whole and all the small things that MS standardised are the best things the 360 has brought to the table.

It says it in the first fucking sentence! :lol

And if you read the article without going LOLOLOL CONSOLEZ you would come across snippets like this:

But you know, whatevs ... CONSOLEZ LOLOLOLOL
That's my point. Why wouldn't they add one word to the title to make it more accurately reflect the list, rather than be obligated to constantly point out these "innovations" are really only such when applied to console gaming? To rile up kids who get mad when people point out the obvious about the list, I guess.

How about I title a list "10 Ways Tekken Changed Fighting Games" and every other bullet point I state something like Street Fighter 2 did it first or "...of course SNK has been doing this since Fatal Fury, but..." The fact that "clever" people like you with your eagle eyes see that I wrote disclaimers about how even though it wasn't really an innovation in the sense the title states, it was still a little victory in the genre of 3D fighters, just means you don't have a problem with grossly inaccurate titles: Something I'd assume it'd be easy for a staff writer on a major website to properly pull off. But it's Tekken's fifth anniversary after all, so what's a little fluff piece with an aggrandizing title gonna hurt?

Keep smashing that caps lock key though. It'll be your key to victory one of these days.

High-Definition Graphics - PC defence force is on site already mopping up
Achievements - strap on your e-peen
Microsoft Points - I can get them cheap, thus beating MS' system, so for once a good suggestion
Trial Games - probably the best thing on the whole list
Gamerscore - isn't this just achievements stretched out into two categories?
A True Entertainment Hub - PSX beat them to it as well as Xbox with XBMC
Digital Distribution - they even concede that it didn't invent it so why is it on there?
Matchmaking - Halo 2 on Xbox 1 revolutionised this
Kinect -

A lot of it so now commonplace and required that its lost on some how much technological advancements to the modern console which the 360 ushered in. What they did for the controller itself is something to be marvel at.

One thing that article forgot is how XBox.com is connected to your 360 in that you can buy everything on it and even start downloads from it. It may be a small thing but I find it amazing you can call home and tell them turn on your 360 and turn it off after 1 minute and it will download everything you queued on the site.

Huh?

I assume you're talking about a physical controller here, not Kinect. What did the 360 do for the controller?

Whether you're an Xbox 360 fanatic, a PlayStation 3 admirer, or a Nintendo enthusiast, we can all hopefully agree on one thing -- the 360 has brought along a lot of innovation.
wow
Some may argue -- understandably so -- that the conversion from real-life dollars to points constitutes an attempt on Microsoft's part to deceive consumers as to the actual cost of downloadable content. But the bizarre point conversion has become indoctrinated among Xbox 360 owners, and the ability to use the same points across multiple marketplaces (Live, Zune, Games for Windows) is rather convenient.
lol at defending MS points. At least you can buy cards for cheaper than they're worth.

Yeah, how can a conversion become indoctrinated by owners? Shouldn't it be the other way around? But just sorta because it doesn't really fit here?

It's probably been a late-night article for the writer.

10 ways to steal ideas from PC gaming then get people to pay money for them?

There's a long list of PC Games I wish people paid money for :(

So many dead franchises and genres.

At least X3 is still awesome.

i love the analog sticks. the degree of control you get from one is just amazing. i don't see how you can put your thumbs on those analog sticks and not be impressed with what they accomplished.

I love the 360, I really do. In fact, had I not had the funds to build a kick-ass PC, I'd still be using MS's console primarily (my 6th one now btw :P).

....its just that, the fans. Ugh, God almighty. About as bad as Nintendo fans. It's like going to Best Buy and hearing a sales person in electronics spout shit about stuff they only have a fraction of the knowledge on.

Owning all three consoles and the PC, I can't begin to express how incredibly frustrating it is to see 360 owners (and sometimes PS3 owners) thump their chest about online gaming, analog controls, and HD gfx; while pointing and laughing at Wii owners (who say visuals don't matter anyway, yet have a Wii gfx thread put up on this forum every month it seems).

Then what happens when PC gamers attempt to set things straight for folks like those mentioned above?

Anyway. Yay 360.

I don't think the articles too bad, apart from the 1920 x 1080 thing. That's either super uninformed or a deliberate troll, and either option does not reflect well on the author.

I love my 360, it's my console of choice for most multiplatform titles. I still love my PC though and my PS3. Am I doing it wrong GAF?

I have to wonder why trial games and digital distribution are separated across two different items. The propagation of demos is a direct result of digital distribution, hence why you saw previously saw tons of demos on... well, you know. Anyway, that just seems like padding.

Of course you are.

Plus, you're a junior, they expect you to say stupid things. xD

Nope, you're only doing it wrong if you can't handle people saying negative things about it.

This list is pretty stupid. A lot of what's listed shouldn't be praised and most of it is fluff. Seriously, why are Gamerscore and Achievements both listed? There's a few genuine points in the list that MS deserves credit for, the rest is nonsense.

Except it's redundant to the point of meaninglessness. Why not simply say the PC changed console gaming, if the 360 itself is heavily influenced by the PC?

this.

the PC had many things standard by the time consoles had the horsepower to catch up. just because 360 launched first or mimicked (it IS a microsoft product after all) common PC features doesn't somehow equate to being innovative or entitled to some industry-altering status. i think "360 is kinda like a PC if you think about it" is a silly argument.

i'm not saying it's a bad thing that it adopted PC-like traits at all, as it's stuff a lot of people have been wanting consoles to copy. but again, first to copy isn't innovation. everyone this gen tried some new things but they also finally did some stuff that's been a long time coming. some succeeded with those things and some didn't. i don't see any of them "changing" gaming other than wii ushering in the whole casual console gamer avalanche.

Well, isn't that actually why they're pretty cool? I haven't paid full price for MS points in a long time (plus have received thousands free from Bing promos), hence any XBLA games I buy are actually discounted a bit. Where's the downside? Plus standardized demos = happy me. It's not as though every indie (or major) PC game has a demo, is it?

It's a poorly written article fo' sho', though.
