1UP Retronauts Podcast: N64/PS3 parallels (bashing included).

I would only compare the Playstation Station 3 to the Playstaion 2, because it will be as awesome, while the 360 will most likley become the next n64 because it has Banjo on it.

IIRC he said that the PSP has good games, the problem being that they just aren't selling that well in general, partly due to lack of promotion.

That's not my point, my point is that he's a ass who thinks that's he's gods grace to gamers. Imagine Shanes biasm with J Allards Ego.

LOL Thats exactly how I feel. If they would have just sold a freakin' gaming console, I would bite.

WOW! For a second there I thought that the PS3 was a gaming console.

Thanks.:)

Jeremy Parish is one of the most biased, annoying journalists i've ever had the displeasure of meeting. He's seriously one of the people who will take his time to point out someone is a loser for playing a PSP.

just curious, when did you meet him?

SnowWolf said:
Wait how come Parish is doing his own podcast? Now that I think about it, I can't remember ever hearing him on 1up Yours or EGM Live. Is he going rogue?

it's a 1UP-produced podcast, jeremy's in charge of it.

I'd like to see more Matt Leone on these podcasts. He does great in his spots on The 1up Show and he's a really nice guy in person. I met him at the Activision even last week and he just seemed more of a true gamer than a lot of other guys there.

It's not like we had sex and I devoured a bad taste for him. :lol

What do you want to know?

I cry foul.

I'm willing to bet that you didn't like him before PAX 06 and you happened to see him walking around. You then thought to yourself, "what a douche." End of story.

Not even close.

Blu-Ray increased costs, yes, but costs will go down eventually. Nintendo was stuck with carts on N64 forever and no amount of time passing by would change that.
Costs COULD go down. Don't assume that Blu-Ray will be a rip-roaring success. There's a very good chance that it could go the way of UMD and Sony will be stuck with high hardware costs for the life of the console.

I honestly didn't know him good enough pre PAX to call him a "buddy". I didn't really pay attention to 1Up until on here Shane was brought up and I got hooked on 1UpYours and the supreme production values (I still thought 1Up.Com was EGM's website). I met Jeremy from a friend who worked at 1Up before PAX and then when I ran into him at PAX and had a quick chat, he just left a bad taste in my mouth, that's all. I'm not someone big who he'd remember, just a lowly small time crook.

TRUTH

If the PS3 had a DVD drive and Wifi and 60gb HDD standard in a single configuration for $399 with a no waggle dualshock 2 they would not have a chance of losing any market share this generation. They would have the most ****awesomest system ever with no chance at MS touching it or coming even close. The 360 head start would be LOL worthy and I would have been lined up in March in my Kutaragi is God t shirt with $400 sitting in my quivering hands. People would literally forget about the 360 nearly as quickly as we all forgot about the dreamcast in 2000. They could have two launch titles, Fantavision 2 and Resistance and they would have sold fifteen million consoles by now due to their worldwide launch with lots of stock that would have happened in March.

I don't think any sane, non SDF member could argue against this. While Bluray might turn out good for the future of the console. The fact remains if they shipped the PS3 with a DVD drive, we'd all have one sitting in our lounge room by now. Sales would be through the roof and no one would have said "if only it had a larger storage medium".

Err, that doesn't make a lick of sense. Movie sales mean royalties. It doesn't have to dick to do with the reduction of hardware costs that will occur over the cycle (improvments in yields, manufacturing etc). The N64 comparison is silly across the board, and that includes the cost of the software medium itself.

A whole lot of coulda-woulda-shoulda going on in this thread..

I've already made my peace with being used as a pawn for Sony to establish a bluray userbase.

I don't feel like listening to this podcast, so what parallels do they make between the PS3 and N64 that couldn't be applied to the PS2 too?

According to the internetz:

PS3 = N64
360 = Dreamcast
Wii = ???

N64 =33 million
SNES= 49 million

Considering N64 sold only a bit less than the most popular Nintendo console, that means the PS3 will sell just 10-20 mil under the PS2. Not bad if you ask me.

100 million consoles at the end of it's lifecycle confimed?

I'm sure GWB is a pretty swell guy in real life... but that doesn't make him any less of a cockheaded swine as a president.

But what would that have done to PS3 games in 2008? I thought you guys liked to laugh at Sony and their supposed "copying" other people? Why do you want them to do the exact samething MS did?

I'm hoping Retronauts will actually be able to get more topics which they can talk about. I mean, they talk about the N64 for about 20 minutes, then start the PS3 stuff.

Speaking of 1up podcasts... Skip / Luke, any chance of getting a MP3 of the full roundtable from last week? Any podcasts besides yours getting interviews next week? Where do you enter in questions anyhow?

Not true. If the PS3 was exactly as you said then the 360 would be a viable substitute. Sony would lose market share because it's competitor offers the exact same experience. Sony would have a tougher time fighting them off. You can moan and bitch all you want but PS3 offers a different experience than the 360 now and Sony is banking on that. You simply don't understand that the key to a successful product is differentiation especially when you are the market leader and expected to drive the industry forward not stand behind it waiting for someone to create a superior product.

BTW before any of you answer "why does sony copy then", well is the same explanation. Sony strategy is to make the PS3 is a superset of the 360 therefore potential 360 customers now have a viable substitute.

SNES is not the most popular Nintendo console. 16 million difference is not a bit less, especially percentage-wise.

Yeah Madden, RR6, COD3, Resistence, NBA 2K6, Oblivion, etc surely do suck right?

You might want to read what he was responding to. I don't think any of those games are going to do much "differentiating." :P

He really is Jeremy Paraiah around here. Anyway, I tend to actually like most of of Toastyfrog says but this is a pretty bad broadcast.

As the PS3's sterling launch lineup clearly reveals.

Yeah because there's no future after the launch and time just ends there. Luke has taught you well my son. He's currently assuming the same every time he want to bash PS3.

...No, just saying that the PS3's first big games at least for the first five months or so are going to be dominated by 360 ports or multiplatform games, which works directly against "differentiating" it from anything.
