1up Yours 3/9/07: GDC and more

Great podcast as usual but I thought N'Gai, though interesting, would often bring the conversation to a screeching halt with his slow way of saying whatever he was trying to say. Sheez hurry up. Its like he slowed time down while talking. Also whats this big hype about Little Big Planet? Looks interesting but there making it out to be earth shattering or atleast John is.

exactly how i felt about him. it was depressing as hell to listen to and there were too many "i interviewed ...." as if he was "the guy" in the industry.

It's almost as if he covers video games for one of the most prominent publications on the planet.

Yeesh. N'gai rules, and it's ridiculous to slight him because he has access others don't.

N'Gai freakin ownz the world, so N'Gai haters best be shutting up before the N'Gai Gestapo comes round to shut y'all down

yeh but my point is that he showed absolutely no excitement for what he talked about. he was just calling out random fact after fact as if this human video game encyclopedia.

i would have rather listened to shane talk about how great home is for the whole two hours because he would at least show enthusiasm in his argument.

and dude, ngai, yes i'm sure he's the man in the industry and knows just about everything, but im just saying he just took alot of life from the typical 1up yours ive grown to love.

You sound like some gossipy "I don't know why, but I just don't like __________" chick from Laguna Beach or something -- what are you going to say next? Is he... like... so insecure???

uh hold on let me call some of the girls i know who actually watch laguna beach so i can understand what youre referring to.

i dont understand why you think my opinion of ngai is gossip in any manner.

He might have been soft spoken but it was clear how enthusiastic he was about games. This is silly.

N'Gai, I'm sure he has some interesting points, but I couldn't hold onto his voice long enough to listen, I kept getting distracted.

Sorry dude.

Hold on, hold on - it may have been a pain to actually read (long-ass paragraphs are not message board-friendly, dude), but I get what ---- is talking about: the concept of a level-editor is nothing new, and its downfall has always been the lack of compelling, interesting levels created by the average user. I never thought of that before.

I do think, however, that the enthusiasm over LBP will push it to heights of popularity and success far greater than other level-editors. This is clearly a game that Sony wants to push hard as part of what defines their online service.

They don't just want the average PS3 user to make levels; they also want big-name developers like EA and Ubisoft to use LBP as a medium for promoting their games. It's not too farfetched to think that we're eventually going to see LBP levels that surpass the complexity and ingenuity of the level demoed at GDC.

And it is because he is so low key that makes the guy approachable. Something that has contributed towards his success.

Some GAFers need to learn to appreciate information shared and to stop being so petty.

N'Gai gets the inside scoop,
N'Gai haters, fly the coop.
N'Gai is the coolest dude,
Supercool, he's never rude.
N'Gai dated a girl named Janet,
That's why he loves LittleBigPlanet.

Yeah, check it.

n'gai sounded really articulate and professional, and approached the discussion with a levity that it far too often lacks. Yeah, it sounded more like a sunday morning political discussion than the standard teen radio station morning show, but i really appreciate that. It's good to have legit thoughtful discussion once in a while.

Why? Did we run him off a while back?

He has written many columns ripping the dialog in Gears of War. He feels that a game with such high production values should have offered a worthwhile story as well. Though there is "only" 45 minutes of storytelling for the whole game, it was not time well spent. GAF's response? "Stories are for lames!" "Gears is perfect!"

He believes that if people are content with mediocrity, that is all they will receive.

And we "GAFFERS" actually said so dumb crap like that? When? I thought many of us were sorta elitest. Wanna games to be better written and masterpieces.

Well honestly, he -did- talk to pretty much all the major players, and it wasn't like he went out of his way to point it out--it always added to whatever they were talking about. He even picked up the guys' rhythm and fit right in--bravo, says I.

Did you miss the Hotel Dusk love?

I thought N'Gai's discussion on Gears story was funny to be honest. Does he rip Nintendo for their lack of detailed storylines too? I haven't seen it yet. Also the smartest comment during the whole podcast was Luke's at the end where he tried to put a bit of a damper on the crowning of Sony by the rest. I think they've Dennis Greened Sony 3 times now this gen after press conferences / keynotes ;).

His point is, they spent 45 minutes on a worthless story. Gears is a good poster boy for this because the story is so bad and the rest of the game is so good. The reason Hotel Dusk got so much love is because the vast majority of game stories are Gears quality. If we, as gamers, demand better stories, we won't settle for stuff like Hotel Dusk anymore.

What do you mean Dennis Greened? Was the 1Up guys the ones saying, "If you want to crown their asses, then crown 'em!"

Why does a critique on the quality of Gears' story require a separate critique on Nintendo to justify it? A game can be judged on its own merits without one needing to expound on the same traits in the competition's product.

The important thing to ME is that N'Gai is a well-informed, articulate, connected enthusiast writing for a major publication. How often does that happen really? Video games only get their due attention when something like "Wii Strap Crisis!" or "EA ships porn instead of Madden!" stories leak.

I SALUTE YOU, N'GAI CROAL.

This applies to so many comments at GAF that it's ridiculous. I've had my argument thrown out the window just because I have an HL2 avatar.

I also thought he was a good guest, Luke didn't seem to mesh too well with him conversationally though.

N'Gai: 'That doesn't explain why it's not a game.'
Shane: *From sidelines* 'Yeah yeah, different things Luke!'
Luke: Oh **** you all, I can't be bothered defending my point. If you want an intelligent debate on Flow then the best I can offer you is the recommendation that you 1. Pause a video of me berating it. 2. Add your reasoned counter-point. 3. Resume the video to watch my digitised self ignore whatever you just said because it's a ****ing video.

Cop-out total :)

N'Gai needs to drink a redbull before you ever bring him back on the 1up yours show....someone check his pulse and make sure he even has one.....He has good info, but is painful to listen to.....Seems like he has bashed Gears since day one....He is Shane's big gun when it comes to supporting sony. IOW, N'Gai is a sony fanboy.

Poor N'Gai, trying to defend the PSP from the likes of 1up yours.

Great podcast this week - the guests were great this week. N'Gai was a little bit more low key and calm compared to the other guys but he had some great insight and info.
