2 years in, PS4 already surpassed PS3 (for me).

Ps4 doesn't have any games that I like and its the same with the Xbox one and Wii U. I played a lot of games but none have really clicked with me. Can't even get games in the genres that I am the most passionate about.

Have you been playing your PS4 or smoking it OP? Sony took a sounder approach at launch this gen and deserve to be lauded for that, but the library has a loooooong way to go before it even begins to scratch at PS3 territory. Your over-enthusiasm kinda detracts from any of the valid points that could be made about the positive trajectory of the system. Instead it sounds like you drank the kool-aid.

I've owned the PS4 since day one and while I really enjoy the system, it doesn't even come close to matching the PS3, let alone surpass it yet. I've been really disappointed with how light the library has been in regards to exclusives. Not to mention how many "features" are still missing 2 years in, features that the PS3 had either near day one, or for a long ass time now.

I mean fuck the damn thing still doesn't tell me when a friend comes online. There are a lot of ways that I really enjoy my PS4. However the volume of basic things missing, and the thin exclusives leave it far from surpassing the PS3.

There's still a way to go yet, but I've no doubt it will given the games on the horizon. Certainly with my love of indies and more experimental games, along with a highlight wheel of late 7th gen titles I deliberately skipped and did indeed get remasters, it's been far an away the strongest start to a consoles game wise I've experienced in 30 years of gaming.

The PS4 is a return to the PS1&2 heydays, and I'm loving it so far.

There's a potential for it to remain competitive in a way I never thought it would be after it was DOA in Japan. Partially because games like Star Ocean 5 and Final Fantasy XV simply have the potential to be better than their counterparts last generation. Partly because there's an imperative and perhaps cashflow from Sony that is driving a lot of projects I never thought would exist, like Final Fantasy VII R. These are exciting times, even if its most likely to be one last big push before Japan almost entirely transitions to mobile or solely exists for the sake of catering to overseas consumers.

The thing is, we need to wait and see whether or not these games are actually good.

I agree but that's not saying much. Outside of Gran Turismo, the best PS3 games for me are Shadow of the Colossus HD (a PS2 remake) and Daytona USA (a 90's arcade remake). The rest is walking movie junk in sub 30 fps.

I've only had mine for a few weeks and it's already surpassed PS3 and Xbone for me.

The games line up for next year and the diversity of genres is the game changer imo. That's what makes it stand out from the competition, that coupled with Sony's vision for the console itself as opposed to all that Tom foolery from Microsoft at the beginning. Microsoft really lacks in first party diversity. It's big three feel burned out and milked dry.

This Christmas my PS4's library will already be larger than my One's of which I've had since launch. Just wish I could change my Naruto CE pre order to PS4... Oh well.

PS4 has a lot of announcements and games in production but so far has a lacklustre lineup apart from all the PS3 remasters and ports. PS4 does not have one good exclusive FPS, action adventure game or platformer, though I guess you could argue the third party multiplatform games on PS4 are better than those that were on PS3.

I don't think it's even a competition at this point. We're so early in the generation

I've only been a PS4 owner for a month but its not even close yet for me. (if we are only comparing the first 2 years of both systems)

In the first 2 years of the PS3 we had exclusives like:

  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Motostorm 1 and 2
  • Tools of Destruction
  • Siren
  • Metal Gear
  • Valkryria Chronicles
  • Yakuza
  • WarHawk
  • Hot Shots Golf

The first 2 years of PS4 we have Until Dawn and Bloodbourne, things will change drastically next year but PS3 easily takes the first 2 years for me with the exclusives it had

I think you underplay how many people enjoyed Killzone Shadowfall, Driveclub, ISS, Everybodys gone the rapture, The Order 1886, PT.

As for the OP, I agree with you, I had the ps3 at launch and still ended up sticking with the 360 all gen.

I am loving the return of all these JRpg's aswell, Reminds me of my actual golden era which was the ps1.

So the ps4 surpassed the ps3 because of the announcements? Lol
If you want to be fair compare the actual 2 years of ps4 with the first 2 years of ps3, when all the games you are hyped for will be released(2016? 2017?) you will compare with the same amount of years passed for the ps3.

While PS3 was disappointing compared to PS2, it had some awesome unique niche games, Folklore is depressingly under rated, the game made it really hard for me not to get a ps3.

What about PS4 compared to PS3? The best thing about PS4 is free rocket league with psplus, all the exclusive games that I have interest in are coming to PC except for Bloodborne. Sony's output this gen has been pretty mediocre imo, both hardware and software are pretty meh, and it shocks me when I read stuff like OMG PS4 > PS3/2.

Just based on announcements? What if these games end up being awful? (except TLG, that's gonna be the GOAT)

Yeah, OP needs to come back and post this after 2016. No good announcing all the jRPGs in the world if they end up being shit.

TLG will also be shit. :P

2 years in and only 2 titles have grabbed me. LotR and MGSV. With nothing else releasing this holiday I'm interested in. So I am incredibly disappointed in my PS4.

Well quite frankly, the order 1886 is the greatest console exclusive game ever made. When you combine this with the robust online system of the ps4,the psn store and the build quality and overall incredible battery life of the controller, then there is no doubt the ps4 is the greatest console ever made.

The snes, dream cast and x360 just pale into insignificance next to this automaton of a machine.

4/10 - try less hard

I don't think so, at AAA exclusive games, it's the worst PlayStation so far despite the fact that Bloodborne and Until Dawn are amazing games, 2016 looks WAY better but we are still far for from what it could be.

When Rockstar's true next gen game comes out and not a remaster, only then will it surpass it in my book.

Took 2 years and a half for Grand Theft Auto IV to come out on PS3, and 3 years and a half for Xbox360.

Rockstar is coming!

It has been just an extension of the awful last gen until now, but with the announcements of the last 6 months, the outlook is better for me than it ever was on PS360. Japan finally back from handhelds to home consoles.

It has potential, but certainly didn't surpass it yet in any way.
Bloodborne is really good though, up there with the first dark souls.

Not even close for me. Too many of their first party devs have been MIA or have released disappointing games like Killzone. A few new IPs like Knack and The Order have fallen flat. It's due to turn around in 2016 but it's been a slow start.

I think being excited for game announcements more than an entire generation's-worth of game releases is something that's easy to slip into in the moment, but isn't a lasting feeling. In terms of a platform? It's a much better system, well beyond the obvious jump in power.

For third party support, it is easily some of the best any Sony got since the PS1/PS2 days. Lots of strong third party exclusives or multi-plat titles alongside a push for a more variety of titles (western and Japanese).

The bigger issue is on the first party front, as the PS3 was better here; more exclusive off the bat and a larger varitey of them. But to be fair, the quality of exclusives have been better (minus Knack and Order disappointing people), so the less amount of them is a quality vs. quantity deal for me.

I would say Sony is doing a great job as I want a PS4 next year, but the fact I didn't run out to get a PS4 last year or at launch means I'm not too keen on its software line up now. When 2016 lands, it will be amazing in my eyes but now, a strong start for the console but nothing really appealing to me.

It hasn't for me yet.

I've played some amazing games and had some great experiences but not many of them felt fresh or new where as with PS3 the first couple years seemed to bring a lot of fresh new IPs and innovations that have stuck with me.

To me PS4 is nothing but future potential, I've enjoyed PT, Bloodborne and Wolfenstein but games like Dragon Quest 11, FF15, FF7 and Ni No Kuni 2 give me hope for the future of the platform. It's fine as it is but it's not remarkable.

Loving every minute of my PS4, games like Dragon Quest Heroes, Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Transistor, Resogun etc. Loving the indie support and old games with trophies (FFVII, Rogue Galaxy) And next years game line up is insane.

Can't say right now but if ps4 delivers the games that are coming out then ps4 will easily beat ps3. Have to say it's the japanese support this gen which is making the difference.

Im enjoying my ps4 but it's still far from the ps3 for me.

Bloodborne was amazing but that's about it when it comes to exclusives (not to say that the others are bad, they are just not "really fucking amazing" levels of good).

There have been some great multiplats though, but not great enough to compete with 7 years worth of games and new franchises from last gen.

The future is looking great. But I'd rather wait and see if these future games actually end up being as good as they look

I've had a PS4 since launch and i have been bored and underwhelmed so far. 2016 it seems like the PS4 is finally becoming worthy. Though no getting excited before i actually have the game and play it.

In terms of price X look they have for me
Coming from the fat grill for $599 to the sleek $399 design was such a huge improvement so hats off to Sony

Games are getting there but not yet , probably after 2016 when uncharted 4 and a bunch of other games release
I need shenmue 3/the last guardian/ff7 remake to release too

Can't go announcing those games and release 2-3 years from now

Not even close for me. Then again we are only two years into the generation. Japan and Sony WWS are finally waking up. If 2016 goes as planned, the tables will be completely turned.

At this point in the PS3 lifecycle, I think I was mostly playing Persona 3/4 on it upscaled so its hard to disagree.

VC was nice but it's also cool that PS4 has Tales, DQH and the FF games so far. Less JRPG drought early on, or at least it feels like it.

2 years into the new gen there´s only one game that calls to me: Bloodborne. And maybe TLoU, but it´s also in PS3 so I won´t count it. PS4´s library looks really poor to me, it´s been 2 years and all we have are promises of games to come. And what if those games don´t turn out to be as great as they say?

If I had to choose now between PS3 and PS4 I´d go with PS3 hands down, the difference in their libraries today is colosal.

Yeah no. Out of the 2 years, I only truely enjoyed Bloodborne, PT and Until Dawn as exclusives (with a few non exclusives, but the rest I plainly buy on PC because the ps4 is already being outperformed). The rest has been lukewarm or "nice" but not something i'd put on a pedestal as a testament to the PS4's software quality. And considering the amount of flops like the order or knack, or just plain forgettable games like Driveclub or Killzone. Hell I still got way more mileage for my vita than my ps4

I enjoy playing on it when I do, but I think 2016 is gonna be a much more defining year as it comes to it's software as most anticipated releases will actually hit this time around. If it delivers though, it's gonna be awesome and will sit comfortably as a great console. But it had a very VERY sluggish start, and i'm hoping that it's the last we'll see of these kind of console generations where the first two years are nothing but slogs (hint: give backwards compatibility next time to ease the pain)

Gotta play Persona 5 and FFXV before I can call it, but so far, it's great. They did a lot more right this time. Some of it is that the Xbone was such a disappointment that PS4 because the de-facto "multiplat game" console so I'm getting a lot more use out of my PS4, than I ever did the PS3 -- and in fact, I still don't own an Xbone. But that's not to take away from the many things Sony did right:

- Excellent access to Playstation classics across all generations of their consoles. PS Now for PS3, PS Classics for PS1, PS2 direct emulation
- Sharing and broadcasting are one controller button away
- Significantly better performance and IQ in every multiplat game
- Deeper sense of network/community than PS3
- Cross buy and remote play still keep me charging up my PS Vita and using it
- Services like Vue and Now are absolutely amazing and I can even use them on other devices
- Better exclusives: Persona 5, Bloodborne, Disgaea 5, Gran Turismo 7, Uncharted 4, Last Guardian, and console exclusivity of Street Fighter V, Shenmue 3, Galak-Z, timed FF7: Remake exclusivity, and great remasters of TLOU and FFX/2. This absolutely stomps over Halo, Forza, and Gears, for me. Sorry.

PS4 + a decent Steam machine + Wii U has me covered for this gen, easily.

On PS3, so much was awkward for years and I went 360 for all the cross-platform stuff. They had wonky online services, bad access to oldies, very few exclusives that interested me, and not much more muscle than the 360. Hell, for the longest time their PS2 graphics output was all fucked up on PS3, right as I'm trying to play FF12. That still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, years later. Anyone who doesn't appreciate all that Sony is doing right this gen has constructed some kind of weird argument that has nothing to do with the essential value, capability, and exclusive functionality of the PS4 over what they offered last gen, and I'm saying that as a former Microsoft Studios employee.

Wish PS4 could do 4K video tho. Oh well, I just jumped in a bit early that's all. :P

Honestly, what the hell was so great about PS3's library? That thing was collecting dust for months at a time.

2 years in, I still don't own a single game that makes me feel like I was right to buy a PS4.

Gotta wait some more I guess.

Couldn't agree more. Day 1 owner and none of the exclusives make me feel like it was worth it. I regret buying it in comparison to my Xbox because I have a ton of exclusives that I love on that platform. I think the lack of 1st party titles is because Sony stayed supporting PS3 for far too long. Can you imagine if the PS4 launched with The Last of Us and GT6? As someone who owns consoles for exclusives I couldn't be more disappointed.
