I love how when Federer struggles early on its poor form and anxiety of his rivals, but when Nadal wins a match that a player chokes it because he is a fighter and his mental determination. Nice spin ESPN.

Dude plays awesome shots and makes this a contest when the world was expecting a rout and all you guys do is complain?

It's kinda hard to root for someone who raises his game to get to the finish line, then stops just short every time.
 
Making an awesome shot every couple of games doesn't excuse the stupid errors and the fact that Nadal was playing like shit.

I mean he had 2 sets at the tip of his hand. How could you NOT complain?

Cause this match was still 10 times more entertaining than half the other gimpfests we got on tour these days.
 
Who the hell is "Steve Johnson" and how did he get in the US Open draw? Sounds like a generic player #1 name. I know Jack Sock got in by winning the Kalamazoo junior tournament but How did 525 ranked Steve Johnson get in?

he won the the 2011 NCAA Men's Singles title which guaranties you a WC to the USO.
 
Have you guys ever noticed how Federer is always on Djokovic's half of the draw and how Murray is on Nadal's half of the draw? A lot of people are screaming "fixed" and a lot of other people claim that THOSE people are nuts and it's just the luck of the draw.

So I took it upon myself to analyze 3 past eras with 4 guys of similar consistency (aka mostly grouped near the top of the ranks), compare them with THIS era (Federer-Nadal-Djokovic-Murray) and see how frequently the men are paired with each other ("paired" in this sense meaning whether they land on the same half of the draw together)

I'm not done analyzing the data, but here's a sneak peak:

McEnroe-Lendl-Connors-Wilander Era (1983-1985)
-number of times of a POTENTIAL "McEnroe-Connors" pairing: 7
-actual pairings: 4 times (57%)

-number of times of a POTENTIAL "Lendl-Wilander" pairing: 11 times
-actual pairings: 5 times (45%), with 3 consecutive pairings



Seems fair, right? They're both near 50% (as I've found with most of the previous era data) which reflects the supposedly 50/50 chance of being paired together. Now, here's where the fun starts:


Federer-Nadal-Djokovic-Murray Era (2008-present)
-number of times of a POTENTIAL "Nadal-Murray" pairing: 14 times
-actual pairings: 13 times (93%), with a PRESENT streak of 8 consecutive times

-number of times of a POTENTIAL "Federer-Murray" pairing: 12 times
-actual pairings: 1 time (8%)

-number of times of a POTENTIAL "Federer-Djokovic" pairing: 15 times
-actual pairing: 13 times (87%), with 7 consecutive pairings

Yeah....ummm....
 
didn't espn analyze this just some time ago? they said something along the lines of that they never got similar draws that the ATP gets all of the time.

but what why would they give federer djokovic (and now reversed) and nadal murray? what's the point?
 
The ESPN report was about the U.S. Open draw irregularities involving how often top seeds play crap opponents (when compared to the other 3 slams).

As for the reasons for Federer-Djokovic/Nadal-Murray pairings, my theories (that are shared with others):

1) Ensuring a potential Federer-Nadal final. They have the most fans of anyone and would obviously get bigger crowds and a higher TV rating (and past ratings prove it). At the end of the day, it's all about $$$
2) Djokovic matches up well with Nadal and Murray matches up well Federer, and it can be argued that Federer matches up well with Djokovic. Keeping Djokovic away from Nadal (and to a much lesser extent, keeping Murray away from Federer) allows for Federer and Nadal to get to a final with much less difficulty.

Of course, Nadal and Federer have to BEAT their opponents to meet in a final but these huge roadblocks (Djokovic & Murray) being out of the way makes it even easier.
 
Good thing they didn't give Cox a wildcard, dude was a bum. And Steve Johnson has look more composed and more impressive that I have seen him in any of his ollegiate matches.

Yeah, sucks for her. She doesn't want to retire from tennis but maybe she should. I don't think she's played a major healthy all year.

Yeah they probably don't even realize what they're saying I bet. The radio commentators even mentioned his burned fingers but acknowledged that it might have sounded like he was making excuses.

Man, Isner seems to have an amazing second serve. He should really use more variety in his first serve using (side)spin like Federer does. I can appreciate those bombs just like the next guy but I think it could really improve his game. Also seems to be using his wrist too often in strokes

I don't either, I fucking hate him and he should never be on a center court until the finals of a slam. I've watched 70 year old men have more exciting matches then him.

I find it funny how the British claim him when he's winning and just drop him as soon as he loses. Someone posted a link to a "British" meter back in the Wimbledon thread. Enough of the Murray hate.

my dad has that disease.... fucked up his kidneys :/

also his legs swelled up to double the size making it impossible to walk
 
Alright boys, heading down to Ashe for some day session matches, Federer match included. Wish I had a hat, though. Sun is gonna be ROUGH. I'll see if I can get some decent videos/pics but I'm not sure how the view is from the Loge section B row.

Monfils has been doing some incredible shots all match long. I just saw one I had never witnessed even once since I've started watching tennis. I'll post the predictable youtube video of his highlights when I find it.


Great match too, why would anyone choose to watch Federer's match is beyond my comprehension lol. 1 set to Ferrero, 3-3 in the 2nd set.
