Football federations. I think the price money difference is significant. So them. Edit: nevermind, it's not.

And TV channels. And sponsors. And the people who sell shirts and stuff outside the stadiums I guess.

They give out gold, silver and bronze medals like in many Olympic competitions. Small nations do take pride in winning third place, Croatia in 1998, Sweden in 1994 and Turkey in 2002.

Its not like other sports "if you aint first, you iz last!"

The match for third place has been there from the get-go. They arent going to change it, especially now that revenue money is more the reason to keep it.

Come on guys, third place is still respectful. The 2002 WC in Germany had Germans still show up in the third place game for the home country. And the fans cheered when they won. It is still a measure of how far you got.

Though my real reason is the saltly tears of Brasil or Holland losing twice.
Edit: 2006 not 2002. Bad memory guys lol.

Moneh.

This is glorious. Bravo Google

Germany was 2nd place in 2002. They were 3rd in both 2006 and 2010 though

Not really...

I'll translate here what I read somewhere else and explain why this brazilian sympathy towards Germany:

The Germans came to Brazil (a year ago) in a small village at Bahia interior state and...

- Bought a terrain,
- They made a Hotel/Resort,
- They invested in the reform of a local Health Center,
- They made a local football field,
- They donated an Ambulance,
- They invested in the creation of a integral time program for children in a local school,
- They hired the people of the city, dozens of people,

Later, when the German squad arrived...

- When they're not training, they socialize with people at the small city or at the beach,
- They participate in parties with the population,
- They use jersays of local teams,

When they won over our Seleção...

- They never did anything to disrespect us,
- They didn't disrespect the the players or the public during the massacre,
- Some of them showed that their idols were brazilian players in the past,
- They stayed classy even knowing they made history here,
- They posted kind messages to brazilians in social networks,

So, you can't ignore all this just because of a game.

Ah it must be 2006 then because it was when Germany was hosting. They lost to Italy. Sorry my memory is shot.

Ditto.

I'm supporting Germany since the beginning, in great part 'cause of this:

Ab sofort gibt es das neue DFB-Auswärtstrikot im offiziellen DFB-Fanshop. Mit seinen schwarz-roten Querstreifen soll es bewusst an den beliebten Club Flamengo Rio de Janeiro erinnern und somit Glück für die WM 2014 bringen. Ganz im Zeichen von Brasilien, mit stylishem Kragen und modischen Querstreifen in Rot! - Dein Trikot für Rio!

2002 WC was in Korea/Japan, Germany was 2nd. 2006 was in Germany where they got 3rd place.
Right, I edited my post. Thanks! I remember because of an article by one of the players (perhaps a book or interview?) said they still gave it their all because of the supporters cheered them on.
