Still chugging along with an Asus g72gx. It's lasted me 5 years. But just now I tried plugging in something to the rear usb port. Not only could I not plug it in, but the screen went black, the fan died, and the power button wouldn't do anything no matter how long I held it. The underside was still warm though, so power was still running.I had to take out the battery and put it back in, then the power button worked.

Guess that the usb connector on the motherboard is bent, looks like I'm down to 1 USB port. Wee.

Probably going to end up getting a new laptop some time in 2015 - This core 2 duo + 260m hunk of junk just isn't going to last much longer, I think

I must salute you for lasting so long. I replaced my 260M laptop probably 3 years ago.

too rich for my blood KJack. What kind of settings do you think I can play NBA 2K/GTA V on with a 860m?

2k probably maxed, can't speculate on GTA V until they release the spec requirements.

well jeez guys i guess it's finally come to this - i need another laptop. like to thank k.jack for the previous recommendation just over 3 years ago now, you're a good man (woman?).

country: UK
terrible time for a laptop to pack in this so I'll be lucky pushing £650
15.6" screen's perfect, would accept marginally smaller but no bigger please!
Quite into the idea of being able to run GTAV at 1080p on high but no spec = no dice i suppose atm. i admit running current gen titles at around those settings might be a pipe dream at that price so will happily be brought down to earth

How much is international shipping generally? If it's under $150ish, then you should consider buying from the US and having it shipped to the UK. From what I've been told, US prices are about 30% lower than the UK, which is pretty hefty when you consider how expensive a laptop is to begin with.

Hey guys, back again.

So I held off on getting a laptop a few months back because of funds and time.

Now, the better half is getting me one for Christmas and tasked me with figuring out which one to get.

I've been looking into the hybrid 2-in-1s and I love the option of running my design programs and work stuff while also having touch screen capabilities (if the screen can work 1:1 with my wacom pen for design that's a plus. That surface 3 got my mind going crazy and my wallet crying)

Saw some Lenovos, but the WiFi issues ive read online is bothering me. Still, I come to you laptop GAF to help once more:

Still, as its my gf buying it, I don't really want her hunking a huge chunk of change down on a laptop for me. So, I guess the 5-7 or so hundred range?

Lots of design, gaming will be for indies/steam titles (never had steam before so I'm interested in diving in.) Also, some MMOs.

So...5-700,able to run my design programs, touch screen capabilities (I want a tablet in the future and also want to know if a stylus will work on these 2-in-1s.

Otherwise, I'll settle for a laptop within that price range, but better specs and get a tablet later on.
Thanks for any advice on this GAF!

Do you have a prefered screen size? I guess you want something in the 13 inch range judging from your description but a confirmation would be nice.

No preferred. Not a huge fan of gigantic screens. 13 sounds fine. 15 max really.

Edit- sorry for late reply. Was watching interstellar. A....mazing.

I honestly don't know enough about 2-in-1s, to feel comfortable recommending one.

It was an optimus V off pcspecialist, don't think i've got the funds to go for another one. I think that acer v5 model that's been banded around a few times here would be perfect, but can't seem to find anywhere in the UK that's selling it. Bigzod may have a point about shipping from the states, I think any imported items are taxed at 20% of it's value so may be marginally worth it

Use a duty/tax calculator, before you do any importing. I doubt that's an option, with your budget. Configuring one of these, with the GT 850M, seems like your only budget fitting option.

This is the beat buy option. The i5 is cheaper.

What about this guys? I can live with a decent laptop (my previous one was a 2006 Compaq...so...you know. I'm okay with that)

Decent power, runs adobe, maybe some steam games here and there, streaming and the like.

What do you think?

Edit-

Why'd you give up on the tablet?

The G50 is a pretty decent laptop.

Errrrr forgot that my dad has an XPS 12, and it seems really cool. He loves it. It slipped my mind that it's a 2-in-1. Those are a bit more pricey than the cheaper ones though.

Yo, K.Jack!
My budget just went through some changes and now I have about $1000 for a laptop and $1000 for a desktop. (An improvement, I think.)

Still, with that budget, what would you recommend? Someone told me to check out the N550JK and the Lenovo Y50 to get an idea, but I played with the Y50 and the trackpad was horrendous. Like, it just wouldn't work well. :/

I am getting rid of my desktop and may be moving around a lot in 2015.

I am looking for a windows laptop that is $1000 or less.

would like for it to...

- have a real long lasting battery
- excellent display quality (large but not huge)

I do a ton of photo editing and I scan film and edit HUGE image files (500mb+). The most taxing thing I will be doing on it. I will not be playing games on it.

Looking for the most economical choice - best deal out there.

Please help?

Depends on what kind of deskop you're building. What're your plans?

Sounds like you need an Ultrabook type, with an IPS display.

my buddy bought a clevo/sager from xotic pc like 2 years ago, I reformatted it and was wondering what the sound from the fan was and then bam. WTF is this unprofessional shit in here? They charge for this "upgraded cooling"

Man I always tell people that the copper upgrade is a shameful scam. They charged like $80 back then, when you can buy a pack of the copper sinks for $8 on eBay. Too bad he got played like that.

The fans are probably caked in dust, or a bearing went bad.

The 860m runs cooler and uses less power being a newer generation. From googling this link seems pretty invaluable for accessing performance:

Review Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M Maxwell vs. Kepler, it compares both the Maxwell 860M the Kepler 860M, as well as a 770M, in a bunch of games. So you should get a real good idea hopefully. Some benchmarks show a pretty wide gap in performance between Maxwell and Kepler 860Ms, as much as around 50%, and others they perform closer.

960M probably would walk all over the 860M though, if it's the same as other 9XX cards, as a 970M > 880M.

I'll be building an i7, GTX 970 machine with 16GB for any virtual machines I might need for class. It'll be built in March or so. >.>
I want a laptop that can replace my XPS 13 with good build quality, a nice keyboard and trackpad, at least 4 hours of battery life, and can play games at 1080p with a decent framerate.
The Y50 met most of those requirements, but the trackpad was teeeeeeerrible. lol

There won't be much 1080p gaming, in a $1k budget. Just leave that to the desktop.

Still no date. It should drop when the desktop GTX 960 drops, which is expected to happen next month.

Country where it will be purchased.
USA
Maximum budget.
$550
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight).
15"
Planned usage
-Schoolwork
-Media consumption
-Very light gaming (older games; Shovelknight; TF2 would be the most demanding thing played, and willing to run it at lower res/windowed mode)
-A 1080p screen is preferable, although if not possible at this price point I could compromise
-If there's something thin, light and with decent battery life/screen I'd take that over some gaming performance.

Any help on this? It's for a friend. I can't make threads and this is the only laptop rec thread I could find. There were some nice microsoft store deals that expired and I'm struggling to find anything else suitable. This for example was like $399 and is kinda what I'm looking for/would be happy with:

I'd disagree, an 860m or 870m should be able to get solid FPS gaming on 1080p, which is around the 1K zone.

870m 1080p fps benchmarks Link:

The Crew Ultra- 36.3, Dragon Age Inquisition Ultra- 25.3, Far Cry 4 Ultra- 32.9, Assassin's Creed Unity High- 26.2, CoD: Advanced Warfare Ultra- 33.8, Ryse: Son of Rome Ultra- 30.1

860m 1080p fps benchmarks Link:

The Crew Ultra- 26, Dragon Age Inquisition High- 27, Far Cry 4 High- 29, CoD: Advanced Warfare High- 39, Ryse: Son of Rome High- 23

It's just a matter of whether or not he wants to game on his laptop. If he mostly expects to game on his desktop, my suggestion would just be to drop the laptop budget by like $300-$500 and get something far cheaper.

I have to say that I am still immensely satisfied with my MSI GE60 Apache Pro-003. I've had it since May and it's a superb laptop. Handles Adobe Premiere and After Effects like a champ. Runs most games on high without any issues.

I do have a question, though. My brothers old Samsung laptop died and it had a blu-ray player in it. Is that something that I would be able to place in my GE60? Are drives universal in that way?

Looking at the Asus w/860m 4GBVRAM 8GB Ram for $1350 versus another Asus w/970m 3GBVRAM 16GB Ram for around $1500. Is that difference worth it? How much of an upgrade would that be GPU-wise, I'm having trouble finding benches testing the 4GB 860m versus the 970m.

Well the 970M > 880M > 870M >> 860M. Not sure about specific benchmarks, but the improvement would be substantial at the very least.

Gotcha. Sounds ace.

I'm looking to stay within $1500 as a hard limit (besides taxes). I know the Asus has great build quality, low noise, excellent cooling, cool looking case etc etc.. But upon further inspection, MSI is looking great with better specs at around the same price.

Do you have any experience with both brands?

It would work in your laptop just fine.

The 970M is 2x the speed of the 860M. A jump that large for $150 is a no-brainer.

It's a pretty simple comparison for me. The Asus has an IPS, so go that route.

I do have an MSI GT70, and I love it. Asus and MSI are both at the top tier of gaming laptops, in regards to build, keyboard, speakers. MSI wins in a few areas: you can change the colors of the keyboard (vs just red), it comes with 2 years of warranty standard (vs 1), the speakers are better. But Asus wins in having a better screen, and significantly better cooling, two areas that should matter the most to a avid gamer.

does that mean the laptop won't come with a vga or hdmi port?

Honestly, any laptop will have trouble playing future games at max settings within 1-2 years of release. Even a 980M would probably have to drop down to at least high to game on 1080p within 2 years, if not earlier. With the 860M a generation behind, it'll definitely be "outdated" even earlier but that's the price you pay for budget gaming on a laptop.

If you're not as concerned with the exterior build and external, Sager will almost certainly get you the best internal components for your money. Their cooling is actually very good and you can even get a 980M 4gb laptop for around $1600 (or a 970M 6gb with a 128gb SSD for $1500), slightly above your budget but outside of another Sager build, the next alternative would cost $2K+ if you want a 980M.

However, if you're only looking to choose between Asus and MSI, I'd always recommend MSI. MSI is almost always cheaper, I haven't seen an Asus with a 970M or better lower than $1800 while MSI has the soldered 970M 3gb laptops at $1499. Build quality is generally very similar while Asus generally does have better cooling, with MSI having the better warranty.

Nope, if you look on the specs on the laptop page itself, it'll clearly state what input/output ports the laptop has, including HDMI slots. I believe the external display video adapter that xotic mentions is if you want dual or triple external displays, which will require the external display adapters since most laptops only have 1 hdmi port.

The adapter they speake of is for hooking up multiple external displays, and has nothing to do with the installed GPU.

I really wish the 960M was out, so people in the $1k budget range wouldn't be buying a lame duck GPU.

For 979 is this a decent computer that should last for awhile?

Linky.

Nope. Not when you can buy this for just a little bit more.

I'm not even that sure it'll be 1K or less. I've been looking at some of the resellers with preorder configurations with a 960M and they aren't that cheap, hovering around $1100-$1200, less than a 970M but still not really in that "budget" range and that's on a Sager configuration, which traditionally always offer better internal components for lower pricing. We'll know for sure later but I'm not that confident about the pricing.

Well yeah, the budget models will fall into the same range that you now find the 860M. ~$900 for a cheap Y50 dual core SKU, up to $1.2k for your Asus/MSI models.

edit: one more question, which brand is better on build quality.. Asus or Dell?
