2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

I believe they said Q1 2015 but no official date yet, assuming it doesn't get pushed back.

I guess the question is should I wait for the 960m or not.

I feel like I should just so I don't have to get an already obsolete 860m...ugh this decision has been killing me for months

I've been holding off on buying the Lenovo Y50 till the 960m series laptops release but even the 970m and 980m series hasn't been released yet in this country (India) so I'm just going to go for the Y50 soon. The Y50 is the only $1200 laptop here with a 860m, there's a bunch of MSI's with 850m's for $2000 which makes no sense. I'd import a laptop from the Sager resellers online but sending a laptop back and forth with high shipping costs for warranty in case of a failure is not my cup of tea.

What about buying some MSIs from some international re-sellers and having them shipped to India? Shipping will probably suck but an MSI laptop with a 970m is around $1500. MSI has a global warranty policy so it shouldn't be that bad to send in for repairs in case of failure.

For Sagers, this is what a sales rep from another forum posted regarding international warranties:

As mentioned Sager warranties are US only. However if you do need warranty work and we can identify what is wrong we can often just swap that part which will save on shipping costs. Not all parts will be that way, say like a motherboard, but easily removed parts like HDD/SSD or RAM can be done that way.

Planned usage I I will mostly use it for programming in Eclipse and other school work. Some gaming is a bonus. I'm currently using a laptop made in 2007 which I also play all my games on, so anything bought now should be an improvement. Or will it?

My biggest priorities are that the laptop is light and easy to carry to university everyday, and that it has long battery life. My university has too few power outlets so I need a battery that will last ~4 hours of active usage. The longer battery life the better. A sleek design that makes it quick and easy to slide in and out of a case or bag is pretty important as well. And since I will be programming and multitasking quite a lot, a resolution of 1080p would be preferable. I also want a good keyboard suitable for typing, and that doesn't have too many weird "fn" shortcuts. If the fan could be silent during non-gaming use, that would be nice of course, but I'm willing to compromise here.

Regarding gaming, if it's possible to combine with my wishes above, I'd like to be able to run "last gen" games like Skyrim, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, DotA 2 and CS:GO with good framerates at 720p resolution and medium/high settings. But honestly, everything that beats my current laptop is alright, I'm thinking of buying a "real" gaming computer anyway.

My current specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz)
GeForce 8600M GT 512MB
4GB RAM

I can always recommend the Lenovo Yoga 2 (not Yoga 2 Pro).
It is compact, well build, has a 1080p 13 inch screen (the Pro has an overkill 3000x1200 screen, which is why I won't recommend it considering Windows' scaling issues) and is very versatile with its "Yoga" features.
Mine (750€ during Amazon Cyber Monday in Germany) has an i5 4210U, 8GB of RAM and Intel HD4400 graphics, but there are configurations of it that will fit into your price range (i3 and 4GB of RAM for example). There's also an empty mSSD slot in there for later upgrading.

It isn't exactly a gaming laptop, but should fit all of your other needs very well. I've been carrying it around for about a month now and am enjoying its build quality, screen and battery life a lot.

Yes, a guy in my class has it and I like the form of it. But it's a fair bit above my intended price range, and it feels like you're paying extra for the touch screen and turnable monitor. Money which could have gone to a better GPU and the likes ;)

I'm thinking of just looking at the cheapest laptops available, and then working my way up until I find one that just surpass the specs of my current one.

13.3 inches
"medium" games in 720p

Guys im in a pickle here. I am in Germany now, been living here for 4 months already, using my phone as an everyday pc which is driving me insane. I am not going to get access to my trusty desktop any time soon (probably never), and i cant buy a new machine until i get back to my country and find a place to live which as well is not going to happen in a foreseeable future. So my only option here is a laptop. I need a small, 11.6 to 13.3 inches device that is capable of playing dark souls 2, xcom divinity os and other games like that in 720p on medium settings. Thing is i dont want to spend a lot of money because i dislike playing on laptops and i will probably sell it as soon as i buy a desktop. Thus my budget here is €400 maximum. Im not sure how possible it is to find a laptop for my needs for that amount of money. Is that even possible? I've browsed sites like mediamarkt.de, amazon.de and notebooksbilliger.de and have found a couple of laptops for under 400 euros with an i3 4005 and intel hd 4400. Not sure how bad this gpu is because ive never dealt with integrated graphics before. Should i be looking for an amd a10 processor instead? What do you say, laptop experts?

Tl;dr: whats the cheapest small laptop that will allow me to play games in 720p on low to medium settings?

Need hep, Gaf.

I have a core i7 3610qm + 640m and when playing the temp go to 81-82 cº (temps of msiafterburnner). Ambient temp is around 20-25 Cº. The browsing temp is around 56Cº, when I start windows 8 is around 46-48 Cº (without opening the browser, only opening hwmonitor).

When playing the system looks like pretty hot, thats why I ask if it's time to open the note to replace the thermical paste or its fine because the temp isnt around 90Cº ?

Whats the maximum safe temp for the 640m?

Max size: No preference.
Planned usage: Schoolwork, web surfing, watching movies, running games like Diablo 3/NBA2k/League of Legends at decent settings and at good framerates. Not for the latest games, just running older ones really well.

Saw this laptop for sale and was wondering if it's a good deal for 449 + a mail in rebate to make it $385.

If not, what would be recommended instead?

any were i can see 980M 970M benchmarks for metal gear ground zeros?

This is it running at max on a GTX 780M, so I have to assume both the 970M and 980M will be doing a solid 60fps.

The HD 4400 would play the games you listed, in some form of 720p/low playability.

You might be better off waiting until you can build that desktop.

If the temps are below 90C, there's nothing to worry about.

That's a website for price comparisons, it lists practically all products from all retailers (you can also filter results based on any specs). It may be obvious, but the white box at the top is for searching.

BTW, €500-600 is about 5000-6000 SEK.
I found this. According to this review, they got 5 hours on battery, though with a slightly different GPU.

This isn't really the appropriate thread, but I have a stupid tech support type question I'd ask in case someone knows.

My new (win 8.1) laptop keeps randomly making noises that sound like system sounds, but I wasn't able to find them when looking through the sounds settings. It's a set of three chime-like "dum dum dum" noises; sometimes they have descending pitch, and sometimes ascending pitch.

I currently only have Hexchat, Firefox, Windows Explorer, Pidgin, and Steam open, and I have sounds disabled in Hexchat and Pidgin. The websites on the tabs in FF I currently have open have never made those sounds on other computers.

Does this apply to any laptop?

Yep. Unless you buy a laptop in which the manufacturers inexplicably sets the throttling limit at some absurdly low temperature.

The only advise I have it that you should run a search to see if others with this model have the same chimes. What model is it, anyway?

Can you make a recording?

Thank you. I got my Vortex IV laptop this week from PCSpecialist. I hope its throttling limit is 90 degrees.

So, the GPU is the 970m with 6GB VRAM. However, I also see Intel HD integrated graphics when I checked the laptop. So, what does this mean and does Windows detect the 970m as the primary graphics thing? Basically, what is the use of Intel HD graphics?

I personally keep Intel HD going if I have no use for it. Mostly a battery life thing, though.
You can always force your 970m to be used 24/7, though:
3D Settings->Manage 3D Settings > tab to Global Setttings > Preferred Graphics Processor > select High Performance NVIDIA

1. It's hard to do a google search with a (probably bad) description of a sound, lol. It's the Acer V15 Nitro Black.

2. It happens randomly (as far as I can tell) so I'd pretty much have to have a camera recording on it constantly until it happens. Maybe I can download a voice recording app or something on my phone and wait it out.

When you aren't gaming, the Intel GPU runs to use less power and extend battery life. As soon as you start gaming, the Intel turns off and the 970M activates.

There is no using them at the same time.

Search and ask in this thread.

My sister needs a laptop for school and she's looking to spend between $1000-1500. She's not going to be doing any gaming on it, just writing and watching youtube but ideally she would like it to last her a long time. I know this is a gaming laptop thread but I figured it would be a decent place to ask about a non-gaming laptop as well.

Ah I see. Thanks. If I run video-editing and image-editing software, then would that use the Intel GPU?

What temperatures are you getting? Most of the models I've seen have fantastic temperatures with the 970M, so it's rather strange that you have incredibly high temps already. Most of them hover around 65C on full load, which is nowhere near 90C.

Honestly, there is almost no point in spending $1000 on a laptop if you're not going to game on it or do anything incredibly stressful, like video editing with it. You could get a really fancy touch screen laptop I guess with that kind of money but it seems wasteful personally.

I'm not sure - I've only used it once with no gaming - just wanted to install a few things. I just wanted to know beforehand as a heads-up. I think it should be fine too.

I think the Inspiron 15 is a good value, for a multimedia laptop. It's thin, has an IPS touchscreen, and comes with a 2 year in home repair warranty + accidental.

I want to get my dad a new laptop.
All he will need it for is to go on the internet (facebook etc) and output films on his tv (so hdmi out with good enough performance to play his films on his tv from a hard drive and sky go?).
Under £300

Will the HP Stream 11 do the job, worried it wont be about the performance when outputting to his tv via hdmi)

Thanks for taking the time. But I've changed my mind. I don't think I will be gaming on the laptop after all. I also figured that full HD might be overkill. So I just need a sleek, light laptop with a keyboard that is easy to type on, and decent battery life. Performance wise, it's enough that it can run its OS without any sluggishness, and 8GB RAM included or upgradeable to. But it seems very hard to find a laptop with good design that's also cheap.

Looking to buy a new laptop at some point in January (next week at the earliest).

Max budget: $800 (preferably $600-700)
Country: USA
Max size: 16" at most.
Planned usage: Schoolwork, medium gaming (League, Paradox games; anything more intensive on medium at best), Photoshop.
Optional: Upgradability of RAM and/or an mSATA slot.

(Also open to buying something used if it gets me closer to all of this.)

Country: USA
Budget: $1000, give or take $100
Max size: 17" preferred, 15" is good too
Planned usage: Medium to high settings on all games (previous and current for 2015), light coding with MATLAB and SolidWorks, other engineering software, and Photoshop
Misc.:
- hopefully a battery life of 6 hours on just web browsing with a bunch of tabs
- screen resolution preferably 1080p
- fan noise fairly medium when gaming
- 4 USB ports (at least 1 or 2 with USB3.0), one SD slot, but no CD drive needed
- must have both HDMI and VGA
- needs bluetooth
- 1 mic and 1 headphone jacks (2 headphone jacks preferred)
- backlit keyboard preferred but optional
- touch screen preferred but optional

Am I asking for too much?
I'd like this ordered by the end of this week.
I'd like to have 2-3 options to choose from, if possible. Let me know if there are sacrifices to the options I'd have to take.

Just weighing in with an opinion. I bought a Lenovo Y50 with an 860m at Best Buy for ~ $1,200 a couple weeks ago and returned it yesterday. Ultimately, I was disappointed with the screen and I'm not sure I want that laptop for that price right now.

I'm going to wait and think about a 14" laptop with a 900 series card in the 2nd quarter of 2015.

There are no gaming laptops with 6 hours of battery life. The Razer Blade 14 and MSI Ghost will get around 5:30 each.

Yeah the screen is really disappointing. The Acer Nitro is the new 'best ~$1k gaming laptop'.
