She had scores lower than the US alternates but placed third overall in the world at the Olympic qualifying round? Do you have a source for this?

Um. What? You can't be serious. Showing that you are the third best in the world at something and then being passed up by 5 other inferior athletes for a chance to prove it wouldn't bother you?

I mean taking part in one of the biggest sporting events in the world should be honor enough, the rule exits to promote the whole Olympics motto, unity in diversity. I really don't take an issue with it at all, they could make it so that there can only be 2 representative for each country, but that would just diminish the competitiveness among national partners.

I definitely have a problem with the implementation though. If you're going to knock someone out of competing, do it at the Trials and be done with it. Sports drama is great entertainment. Bogus drama that could have been solved months ago, is not.
You can't do it with gymnastics. You need 4 people to go in qualification for each event at the Olympics, so obviously you wanna put your best gymnasts there. A team with lots of good all arounders like the usa will always have more than 2 people doing the all around in qualification, so someone will eventually be left out of aa final.

What is crazy is that Hernandez is potentially the second best all around on the US team, and she was not even given the opportunity to compete for it due to the coaches decision, because of the limited spaces. The top 4 probably would have all been Americans.

Maybe a month ago at trials, but not right now as she's dealing with an injury and probably won't do the all around even in team finals.

She did get knocked out at the trials or should have. She apparently had scores lower than even the alternates. She went to Rio purely because of marketing. She knows the rules and Biles queen automatically takes up one spot then she compete with Aly and Aly was better than her simple as is. At that point I don't give a fuck about her past history she didn't finish second from her teammates
I can't even.

There were 2 qualifying competitions, and when you combine the scores of both Gabby was in 4th place. And the 5 people on the team were exactly the top 5 all arounders:

Let’s look at some of the information the selection committee may have used in their deliberations. The P&G Championships and the Olympic Trials are both qualifying competitions as spelled out in the official selection procedures. If you look at the gymnasts AA scores over both competitions this is what you get:

1. Biles 248.25
2. Hernandez 241.65
3. Raisman 240.85
4. Douglas 235.25
5. Kocian 233.5
6. Smith 232.55
7. Skinner 232.1

As it turns out, the Olympic team that was chosen is composed of the top 5 AAers over the two competitions with the next two AAers as alternates (which includes #2 on VT) and the #2 on UB as an alternate.

It would be for me but I'm not a world class athlete that has spent literally my entire life preparing for this moment. I'm not as competitive, driven and incredibly talented as these people. I can't imagine someone like that would be like "shucks, at least my buds got in". Is she happy for them? Sure. Does she think it's bullshit? I would imagine so. I agree with her. I'm admittedly assuming a lot here but I believe them to be reasonable assumptions.

EDIT: Okay, so it was bullshit about Gabby. I figured as much.

Finished watching Men's fencing final four and Women's weightlifting final. Men's fencing was hype. Garozzo making my country proud. Women's weightlifting was enjoyable as well as someone who's almost never seen it before. I'll watch Canada kick the USA's ass in Volleyball tomorrow.

I find the 2 per country rule to be bogus. If 3 of the top women are from the same country they shouldn't be penalized for it, tell the others girls to get better. /shrug

I think you missed the point of the Olympics. The entire Olympics in general is like that, for every sport.

just watched the swimming from earlier. I went to a movie.

My boy Mike Phelps killed it.

Katie Ledecky a monster. Amazing swimmer.

DEL POTRO RISES AGAIN

Well, somehow managed to watch Peaty and Carlin winning their medals, at 3AM, and still made it to work today. Let's see how this goezzzzzzzzz.

No it isn't, in track and field you can definitely sweep the podium.

Those limited participation rules diminish the bronze medal in my eyes. You are not the third best person in the world because people who could lay claim to that title weren't allowed to compete.

Comments from James Magnussen, who was a dual-world champion, but missed the chance to swim for Australia at Rio:
Magnussen hung on the lane ropes afterwards with his head bowed as he tried to process the fact that he will not have the chance to make up for losing the 2012 Olympic gold medal by 0.01sec.

Despite ten months of gruelling rehabilitation and training he had not had enough time to get back to the level required to earn an individual place.

“I guess that’s just where I’m at, I’ve done everything physically to get back to this point, there’s nothing else I could have done. I’ve literally done every extra there is, crossed ever T, dotted every I, it’s just where I am.

“I left it all out there tonight, there’s not much more I could do.’’

That's the way a real sportsman should take it. Realistically, Id say 7 out of ten times he would have qualified as one of the top two, but he didnt when it counted and he accepted it graciously.

Thats the attitude the Olympics wants to foster too.

Also this type of thing. An Aussie swimmer gives up on an event to let another person have a crack at the Olympics.

Van Vlueten has three fractures in her back and concussion.

Not really good news, depending on how bad they are.

I saw the replay on the news about half an hour ago. I thought she had snapped her backbone.

So reading that message from her, I am relieved.

The coolest sounding and most iconic sword type up right now!
I kinda wish though they would use the classic design for this :P

Nah.. He just can't carry a team of scrubs who can't string along a series of passes to save their lives

Also, Iraq was able to double and sometimes triple team Neymar all night. On a normal Brazilian squad, there would be a enough quality players that an opposing team would get punished if they double teamed any one player all-night. Heck, the other Brazilian players literally can't score on an open net.

Oh no poor brazilian saber girl :'( Stepped wrong with the left leg and injured it about half a minute into the duel. had to forfeit.

Lol at the guy in the back of the boat for the rowing competition. Seems to be an important job though, the other guys are too busy to focus on tactics.

Anyone else not really feeling the olympics this time?

I watched soccer WC like no other and usually big games like this have me super invested, but Rio...not so much. Not at all really. I didn't even watch the whole opening ceremony and I don't think I've watched a complete event so far.

I'm not feeling it as much as London, but that really shouldn't count because it's buoyed by a good wodge of national pride. But as an event in itself? I'm enjoying it a lot; as it stands probably behind Sydney (which was the first Olympics I recall really taking in in a big way); it's certainly on my radar more than Athens or Beijing were.

Shamefully, i completely forgot it had started this weekend until i saw a short clip on the news this morning as i was leaving the house.

Watching archery made me think that separating male and female athletes seems pointless in some events. What advantage exactly can a male athlete have in archery?

This question was asked in the Finnish broadcast. Well, it wasn't about archery but about shooting, but anyways. Apparently they used to be mixed competition, but then one year women won everything and suddenly there was a need to have them separated.
