2016 Summer Olympics |OT| August 5th - August 21st

One thing that annoys me about nbcolympics player is it doesnt have proper buffering only buffering around 10 seconds whenever paused which sucks when you internet is essentially dial up speed ;makes a 30 minute match take 3 hours to watch.

Those limited participation rules diminish the bronze medal in my eyes. You are not the third best person in the world because people who could lay claim to that title weren't allowed to compete.

... The point is that the Olympics aren't to find out who the best individuals in the world are. It's to find out what the best country is.

Every sport has their own events outside the Olympics to find out who the best are.

My point about it being true for every sport stands. There's already a limit of participants for every country for every sport. Who gets to go is decided in trials. Rank #1-100 swimmers in the world could all be American but only a few of them would be allowed to compete at the Olympics. That's also why you can also have really low ranked athletes from 3rd world countries competing against Michael Phelps. Again, that's the point.

Tldr: the Olympics in general are already "limited participation" be definition. The two per country limit for that gymnastics event is perfectly in line with that.
 
Argh, NBC cut the swimming stream right after Hosszu won her heat to some "Rio Update" on the 4x1 relay win last night. At least I got to see the whole race and her OR finish, but it would've been nice to take that in for more than two seconds before they dropped it and switched to something else.

Rugby's pretty hype - for anyone who cares, Weightlifting in 30 mins and Archery is still on (pools isn't nearly as interesting for people who aren't into it most likely)

Your point about there being rules to keep countries unable to sweep the podium does not stand since we saw the Jamaican men's 100 team had a legit chance to do that in London. In fact they actually did sweep the 200 meter dash in men's and the 100 meter in women's.

If they want to weed people out from sweeping the podium then you do it at the trials, not at the actual Olympics! That way you can at least keep up the charade that this is the best of the best. When I can see the clear cut third best competitor on one day not be able to compete the next then naturally I'm going to cry foul.

And if the Olympics are not about finding out who the best in the world are then why is the winner of the 100 meter dash in the Olympics called the world's fastest man? That title is not given out at the World Championships. Winning the gymnastics all around at the Olympics is a lot more prestigious than winning at the World Championships. Everyone knows that, and it's why so much is put into winning the gold. Nobody knows how many World Championships Michael Phelps has won but we know his Olympic feats.

You say the Olympics isn't about finding out who the best individuals are when on this very page there is a quote from an athlete that states it is.

lol, nobody is given that "title" because it doesn't exist. usain bolt is called that because he broke the world record.
 
usa got a raw deal in men's archery. they are all in the same section, so it's not possible for more than one to get past the round of 16.
 
Been reading today how Qatar nicely bypassed rules about player naturalization for their handball team.

The winner of the 100 yard dash in the Olympics is always referred to as the world's fastest man. It happens whether they break the record or not. If you are looking for an official plaque then no there isn't one, but going back to the first Olympics I can remember back in 88 the winner was always referred to as that.

Reading comprehension dude. I didn't say anything about sweeping the podium.

First of all, every sport is different in how many from each country is allowed to compete. Since the gold medal winner is one person, you could consider them the best in the world. But you can't say that about the silver/bronze winners due to the built in participation rules I just mentioned.

The point of the Olympics isn't to determine who #1-50 ranked in the world are. The sports already have their own annual events for that.

The point of the Olympics is to determine who #1-50 countries are.

The fact that some sports allow multiple people from the same country to be on the podium doesn't change that.

2 is just as arbitrary a number as the 3, 5, or 10 per country limit already built in. So your point doesn't make any sense.

You get points for throws and locks. If the opponent loses contact with the ground during a throw, it's an ippon and the thrower wins outright. If it's a sustained lock for a number of seconds (forget how many) you also win.

and you don't think anyone has ever referred to the person who won the world championship as "the world's fastest man"? and more importantly, who cares?

Will have to agree to disagree here. When even the athletes state it's about who is the best individual in the world and not the best country it's kinda hard to take your side.

If an individual event allows the top 2 competitors from a country to compete in the Olympics you can lay claim to a legit silver medal. The bronze is where the questioning begins.
 
So if you land on your side it counts as a throw and on your back or stomach it doesn't, but your opponent can continue to go for a hold until the ref decides to stand them up? Also, the Georgian went from 0 points to 1, from 1 to 10, then from 10 to 100?
