2016: The State of the Mute Protagonist

Worse than wondering why the character isn't saying anything would be groaning at what my character has to say the way I groan at what pretty much everyone else has to say. Every time Geralt opened his mouth, all I could think was that I wished he would at least occasionally use a subject.

In most games I really don't mind silent MCs. What breaks my immersion is NPCs that stand in the same spot all day and can't be interacted with. Doors that can't be opened. Buildings you can't go inside. Waves of dozens of enemies all walking into certain death with the PC for reasons that ultimately no one would deem anywhere near worth the amount of lives spent. Silent PC is just a small break from more bad writing at worst and a feasible way for a richness in dialogue most games don't have the budget to voice at best. I do understand the concerns people bring up, they just don't bother me.

True. The Souls series would be way worse if voiced.

Mostly because the character would be like "OH SHIT A NINE-HEADED SKELETON DOG WITH A SCORPION TAIL SHOOTING LIGHTNING WHAT THE FUCK" every six seconds.

When you say it like that, I wouldn't mind voiced characters in Souls.
