25 Years of Mortal Kombat!

The gear system is a good idea but the fact that it's not used in tournaments/competitive environments and how much it forces unlocks and customization into the realm of RNG and grinding is really really shitty. As I said before in the thread, I really prefer the variation system. And if those leaks are true, then that is indeed coming back!

How does Quan have both the best and worst fatalities in the series. Lol
What's the worst though? Because this one
D3PTPfp.gif
is clearly amazing. :D

And woah, some of the original actors look in better shape today than back then. Do they really live in the Netherrealm?

I'm a bit younger so Deadly Alliance was the first one I really sank my teeth into(tried 4 but it was so fucking confusing as a child). DA is still probably my favorite, love the designs and the weird-ass new characters they added. Impale was broken but oh well.

Also spent a ton of time with Deception and the re-release of 3 on XBLA. I destroyed kids online with Sonya....they could never figure out how to beat scissors grab.

Man, classic mortal Kombat...

I had a genesis, and we rented the first game, after watching over people's shoulders in the arcade. My dad, me, my sister, and my brother stayed up all night playing together. Some wonderful soul wrote the blood code on the rental case so we got it all. We set up tournaments between us.

Later we bought a copy for ourselves from someone in the newspaper classifieds(this was pre-craigslist). My sister's boyfriend introduced us to Street Fight and Samurai Showdown, which we also loved, but there was something great about Mortal Kombat. Eventually we saved up and got Mortal kombat 3 and played the hell out of that game.

Good times. I gave up on Mortal Kombat after the genesis, during the saturn era, we went hard into Virtua Fighter, and Street Fighter Alpha. Didn't play another one until 9.

And please dont reimagine any more 3D characters, make more new ones.

No worries we gonna get both.

Also the problems with gear system is that so many cool abilities are not available for tournament and its a giant mess of managing your inventory.

A refined gear system where you unlock 10-20 fixed items for multiple body parts like Tekken 7 would be much better.

But prefer variations at the end of the day.

I'm sure we'll get the Injustice 2 gear system in some way. Maybe even both variations and gears.

Great series that i feel lost it's identity when it became 3D. Although MK4 and 9 were decent enough. MK2 has the best atmosphere and music for me but my favorite entry is Ultimate MK 3 (arcade version).

One thing that bothers me a bit is the janky look of the fatalities. These are mostly the same assets the artists move around like puppets over and over again and they feature very few new animations. When a character is cut in half it's just the same sprite, just cut-pasted around. Eternal Champions on the other hand... god, these fatalities are simply amazing looking with new animations that make MK's already cheap looking ones look like fan made project.

25 YEARS OF OF FIGHTING

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance was the first M rated game my dad bought for me and the series holds a special place in my heart. Love how NRS have handled both MK and Injustice so I look forward to the future.

So Reptile is a Monkey and Scorpion is a penguin, huh..... Funny how both characters' names give a clear idea of what animals they should manifest, but they went in totally another direction.

The Animality idea was not half-bad though. Maybe they can bring it back and execute it more adequately in the future.

I thought that was the joke.

I always liked Friendships

I think they trapped themselves in a corner when they gave the scorpion to Sheva, and had to give Scorpion something else, but Reptile was probably a joke.

Friendships are nice too, but when Ed Boon said that another form of fatality was coming back, I really hoped it would be animalities, even though brutalities weren't bad.

They should flip around Brutalities and Fatalities for the next game.

Every special move and some strings should end the match with a kill animation, like MKX brutalities, but with no conditions to activate them, and they should be called fatalities. You should have to do special things in the match to get the dizzy state and do the more fancy cinematic kill animation, which is more brutal.

They really deserve their success with this series. They have made a lot of efforts to always think how the series should evolve, and brought new stuff to the table on a regular basis.

I hope that the trend continues and that the next game will be full of new interesting ideas.

One of my fondest gaming memories was a local department store breaking street date on the original Mortal Kombat. Went grocery shopping with my mom late at night, and there was just a huge bin full of SNES and Genesis Mortal Kombat. Had the game for a whole weekend before it officially came out. Still to this day the only time I've ever gotten a game prior to release.

I want the variation system back. Drop the gear system asap.

In Injustice 2, up to 10 moves (some specials and traits even) are locked behind the gear system that we will never see in a tournament. Also, most of the gear isn't really that different from each other and then you have situations like Green Arrow where you can't even get a fucking hood which is a staple asset! Lol.

Sure, some variations were always going to be stronger than others in X but the point is you had the option of choosing a different way a character plays... For better or worse. I think if they continue the variation system (I don't think they will) it would be wise to just make it to where every character has 2 instead of 3. Allows for an increased roster size and trimming of the fat that were useless variations.

2 variations per character + tag sounds good to me.

I loved UMK3 Animalties and Friendships. So dumb, and SO many. I have, within the past year, watched all the various "Finish Him" compilations on YouTube. It's so fun to watch. I actually prefer the ridiculous cartoon-y 2D stuff to the newer shit.

Don't get me wrong - I'm all for gore-porn shit like it's become, but the silly factor is just fantastic.

I played a shitload of the early Mortal Kombat games growing up. I'm always a Street Fighter guy first, but Mortal Kombat was a great alternative.

I remember first seeing MK1 at the pizza place down the street and thinking it looked pretty cool. Then I saw a fatality and was like holy shit!

The SNES port was such a letdown. Not just the lack of blood, but the game play was off.

MK2 will always be my favorite and the one I played the most. I remember the first time I saw it at the arcade, it looked so much better than the first. I always liked the style of MK2.

Living in the Chicago burbs, we always got the new revisions earlier. I remember some fatality inputs changing in newer revs and being confused as to why things wouldn't work but also being stunned at the additional fatalities a new rev would bring. Some of my earliest memories of the internet was scouring newsgroups for MK2 moves lists. I would spend entire days during the summer playing MK2 at Enchanted Castle.

The first time I saw the Kintaro fatality, my mind was absolutely blown.

I managed to get the SNES port a weekend early, and my friend and I played it damn near all weekend. It wasn't a perfect port but it was so much better than the first. I have no idea how many hours were spent playing the SNES port, eventually we had played so much we were wasting hours with Shang Tsung, morphing into Sub Zero to do the first part of the freeze fatality over and over until we could morph into someone else to complete the fatality on the frozen opponent. Good times.

MK3 I also played a lot of at the arcade. It wasn't as good as MK2, but I still thought it was great and didn't mind the run button or the roster. Fatalities started to get extra goofy here.

MK4 I never could get into. That Quan Chi fatality was great though.

I did play some of the PS2 entries and remember them being fun but don't remember much else about them.

Unfortunately I haven't had time to play much of MK9 or any of MKX, but hopefully one day I'll get around to it.

Grew up as a fan of Street Fighter first.......... Mortal Kombat "kame" out of nowhere for me. I remember seeing the arcade machine and gravitating to it... when I finally was brave enough to try it out... I struggled (could only really do the uppercut punch.... when I was little I was never able to compute and do the moves with an arcade stick (same with Street Fighter...... yet I could pull off the special moves with a mega drive/genesis controller with ease!). - amusingly I still opt for a dpad controller today..... I tried using arcade sticks on the 360/ps3...... didn't really gel with me.

Anyway my first official turn I got a case of stage fright as people gathered to watch me play............ I actually put an extra $1 in the machine so I could play against someone else... instead of just being humiliated by the computer ai.

I got Mortal Kombat some time later (Christmas 94) when I got a Mega Drive II console. That was a cruddy Christmas, the A/C adapter that came with the console didn't work. So I had to wait until the day after Boxing Day to exchange it and I was finally able to play my Christmas present. Had to go back the following day when the controller that came with the same console didn't work properly (faulty dpad making characters run to the left all the time). While I was there the guys showed me (as a 12 year old!!) the blood code AND pulled off Sub-Zero's fatality............... I was in awe!!!!

Played the game to death, still recall the first time I finally made it to and beat Shang Tsung. Glorious time!!

Played Mortal Kombat II at the arcade, would say it's my favourite game in the series. Got the console version as a birthday present. I also own it on pc and Commodore Amiga. Backtracking a bit, but I upgraded the ram in the Amiga 500 just to play the original Mortal Kombat!!!

Played MK 3 for the first time on pc (never saw nor played it at the arcade).

Saw MK 4 at the arcade, the only game I've ever seen that had a curtain over the machine itself (so the violence wasn't seen by many people ?). Had it on pc, but I'd say it's the weakest of the whole series (for me... as I've never finished it lol).

I had to get MK Trilogy on the playstation

I loved the 3D games (Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon). Shaolin Monks was a good game as well.

I had Mythologies: Sub-Zero

I was excited for Mortal Kombat 9, more so because it got banned in Australia............. I had to play it. And I was eventually able to (pre and post when the R18+ rating was established).

I have to say while the storyline was cool, I wasn't really fond of the graphics. It's hard to explain but when the animations of the fatalities were in motion... I didn't get motion sickness from it, it just looked a bit off (not disgusting, but in the way the colour palette was!).

I got MK X on pc when it first came out after they botched the DLC.... I moved to the Xbox One (it was one of the first games I got for the console last year) and purchased MK XL.

Sub-Zero is my "main" for the series, would say I select him first and play as him the most in every MK game. Much like Ken is my main in the Street Fighter series.

Loved the first movie and own the soundtrack cd :-D.

I also have the first lot of trading cards AND Mortal Kombat story comics.

Phenomenal series.

Started with the first MK but MK2 drew me in. However, if I was to play the classics now, I would play UMK3 since it stands the test of time gameplay wise. When it comes to the 3D game, I actually liked the 3D games. They're great fun that you don't have to take too seriously..

Throughout these 25 years, I've learned that:

- Sub-Zero is Scorpion's punching bag
- Kabal will probably be top tier in the next MK that he appears in
- Hsu Hao is the most hated character in the series...or maybe Kobra since MK9 redeemed Stryker... or maybe it's the fact that the 3D characters were mostly awful overall
- Reptile fans will never stop asking for Human Reptile
- Reptile will continue to get the short end of the stick and will always be a jobber
- Baraka will continue to be a jobber and fade into obscurity popularity wise even though people were nuts over him when he debuted in MK2
- Mileena has managed to somehow surpass Kitana when it comes to popularity
- Jade still sucks

MKXI won't be on PC, right? :(

I got introduced to what is one of my favourite series with MK2 on PC. I also owned the SNES and GB versions, though, but I loved playing it on PC with its absurd loading times.

Okay, so, this is a personal and somewhat complex web of nonsense involving a highly unstable individual I was friends and briefly FWBs with, but I can only assume there will be a never-ending clusterfuck on gaf now until the end of time, which inevitably involves you guys and gals on the mod team in some way, so I'm an open book here. The woman in question ended up being completely psychotic and held a grudge against me after a bizarre love triangle situation developed a few years ago between me, her, and another girl (the other girl I ended up in a long-term relationship with shortly thereafter). This NOLA story she apparently just put up on social media is a delusion of a deeply disturbed person who had a total psychological breakdown as a result of me and the other girl getting together, because she (phew, yeah...) became obsessively infatuated with the other girl (she's bi) on sight when the three of us met up. I wanted to just stay friends with the girl making the accusation and made it super super clear ahead of time that me and the other girl were interested in each other romantically and that could play out as such when we met up. Supposedly this was not a problem for her from accusation, but in reality she uhhh wanted me to die painfully after seeing me and the other girl interact. Plus she became infatuated with the other girl simultaneously to this (she's bi), which created the aforementioned bizarre love triangle that ended up causing her to implode and have an apparently very intense and long-lasting grudge. The whole story about how that love triangle thing played out is, frankly, nuts and scary, and involves this girl bringing us to a compound of dangerous scientology spinoff cultists on that same trip, who roofied us, attempted to recruit/scam me and attempted to abduct/rape the girl I ended up dating, in what was a fucking scary situation that resulted in me and the other girl and the rest of my friend circle never speaking to this girl from the accusation again.

Shame they killed off Kobra. He was hilarious and the obviousness he's Kobra Kai dude from Karate Kid combined with Ken Masters made him even better. Besides I love playing Karatekas in fg and modern MK is lacking those. Taekwondo too.

I need to fire up Deception to play him a bit, lol

My girlfriend and I went as Sub Zero and Scorpion to NYCC on Oct 8 for the 25th anniversary. Couldn't get into that damn panel with Boon and Tobias though. :( Is that online anywhere yet?
