Doesn't have anything to do with insanity though. Neither the smart guy you knew nor the teen vampires.bengraven said:I knew a guy who was in love with Lain once. True story.
He was a very philosophical type, intelligent and thoughtful, but mind-numbingly insane. He gave me long diatribes about how the love he had for a fictional character was the same I had for my girlfriend.
It reminded me of those teenage vampires who insist they're real vampires...and that we're just not thinking hard enough to accept it.

Mostly a longing for individuality. It's a sign of someone growing up.bengraven said:What is it then? A sub-culture I can't understand?

Edit: As for Otakus that declare love for anime characters, consensus is that they want to take real-life issues away from their lovelife. That is also a sign of someone being at the brink of adulthood who's actively preventing making the transition.

I don't know.. I watched some documentaries where this whole Otaku stuff was the topic.FtsH said:wouldn't everyone more or less try "preventing making the transition" at a certain stage of his life? Otaku is obviously beyond this point IMO.

The teen vamps were a topic in a psychology class I had at uni.

Well, I haven't got any smart shit about those people.bengraven said:I shouldn't have said teen, because I've watched several docus on vampires who are as old as their 60s. Or if you believed them, their 1000s.
I don't know. One I watched which I definitely remember the title of is this one:FtsH said:can I find that video somewhere on internet?

But as a rule of thumb: If a group of people does something weird that's basically harmless, it's usually not tied to insanity. Insanity is a rare and dangerous state of mind. I mean, really rare and really dangerous..
And it usually leads to way crazier, mostly violent or disturbing behavior.

So that one's pretty good in my opinion (albeit a bit old).
Dangerous to themselves, of course! To others, depends on what they actually do, just like with normal people.Lost Fragment said:Not to derail this thread any further than it already has been, but the idea that folks who have mental illnesses are any more dangerous than the general population is just plain incorrect.

Lost Fragment said:Well, anecdotal evidence doesn't prove anything either way, but I'm bipolar as well and I've been less prone to being violent than several "sane" people I know.
Thought it was more well-known that the mentally ill being more dangerous (to others I mean, we're unquestionably more dangerous to ourselves) and violent on average than normal people was a myth. But...I'll just agree to disagree and leave this debate for a different thread.
