30 minute interview with Shuhei Yoshida

My cross post from the Sony thread:

He teased playing Bend's game, teasing exciting Japan studio titles, him playing the new Gravity Rush game, the new Suckerpunch project, and Quantic Dream's game.

I think this is how its going to go for the rest of the year as far as SCEWWS new announcements:
Tokyo Game Show: Gravity Rush1/2 PS4, Bloodborne Expansion + sequel tease
Paris Game Show: GT7, Bend's game, Quantic Dream's game
PSX2: SSM GoW, Sucker Punch's new game, and
Crash

They won't show/announce so many games at once so close to each other to the ones that they hyped up and gave attention at E3. Not to mention, most of the games you mentioned won't be out until 2017 or beyond anyway and their focus is on their current 2016 announced titles.

At most you will get Quantic Dream's game at Paris Games Week. Gravity Rush 2, Bloodborne expansion and Level 5's collaboration at TGS are likely but I wouldn't get my hopes up..

The new God of War and Gran Turismo 7 will also likely be at PSX. We already know from Cory that God of War will be at this years PSX. Gran Turismo 7 is out next year so it will get attention there.

I don't think we will be seeing Bend Studios and SP's next titles until next E3 at earliest to be honest. At least by then Uncharted 4 will be out, with The Last Guardian and Horizon being close to launch. Better to wait until some of their projects are out before hyping up new things. Otherwise what new titles will we hear about at E3 then?

To be frank, the longer Shu holds his card for Bend and SP the better. I want to see the current announced games get attention and focus from Sony and the gaming world.

What we will likely see are more 2nd party partnerships of smaller games and more indie titles most likely.

Best wishes.

I will forever hold a grudge on him for killing Inkognito, Liverpool, Zipper...

But it was cool to see him talk about the BTS things behind TLG and Horizon.

I love how transparent and willing to interact with fans this man is. The complete opposite of Reggie Fils-Aime. I'm not much of a Sony fan, but he's been a great asset to the company.

I highly doubt he wanted to, but a business is a business, and a guy like Shu, because of his position in the company, has to make those kinds of decisions.

Bend hasn't released a big game since 2011, which is the longest out of all the first parties. There time to debut their title is near. In addition, just like how GG revealed their titles at E3, 2nd generation PS4 titles from studios like SCE JPN (Knack) and SP (Infamous SS) should be due for game announcement shortly.

Be more pissed at the gaming community that wouldn't support those teams and their projects.

I will NEVER know how Wipeout didn't sell just millions each iteration. Wipeout PS3 was RIDICULOUS.

Words used to describe upcoming sony projects:

Media Molecule - "Extraordinary" ----> Dreams
GG - "Epic" ----> Horizon
SSM - "No comment" ----> Game canceled
Sony Bend - "Panic" ----> ?!?

He was right on with MM and GG from the interviews a while ago. I look forward to seeing what 'panic' denotes

Extremely scary shit I would guess. Sony Bend's new game will be a horror title right?

Agree with most of this. My idea would be (also throwing in 3rd parties as well):

Tokyo Game Show: Gravity Rush1/2 PS4, Project Setsuna revealed and demoed, Nier 2 subtitle and trailer, FF7 Remake screenshots.
Paris Game Show: GT7, Bend's game, Quantic Dream's game
PSX2: SSM GoW, new Crash Bandicoot, Shenmue 3 trailer, more FF7 Remake screenshots, The Last Guardian release date.

Sony will have so much to show at PSX that I don't think Sucker Punch's game will be revealed until either GDC or E3 next year. I also think Bloodborne DLC will get revealed before TGS and it's way too soon to tease a sequel.

Loved the reply to the question about Morpheus

"Every time we spend more than 2,20s on anything other than core games you hate it.'

That part was hilarious because a lot of us were wonder what happened but if they spent any longer on it, we would have been pissed. I am very interested in Morpheus but am glad they didn't waste time at the conference. They should give post footage of the 20 E3 Morpheus games on YouTube and focus on getting Morpheus units at Best Buys and EB Games around the world so people can try it.

I think this is more likely:

Tokyo Game Show: Gravity Rush Unfolded and Gravity Rush 2 PS4, Project Setsuna reveal, no demo, Nier 2 subtitle and trailer, FF7 Remake screenshots.
Paris Game Show: No GT7 (it will have it's own event), Bend's game, Quantic Dream's game and Media Molecule's Dream reveal with explanation
PSX2: SSM GoW teaser, new Crash Bandicoot (Sanzaru or Sumo Digital), Shenmue 3 trailer, more FF7 Remake screenshots, Uncharted 4, Horizon and The Last Guardian release dates

But it is true that they'd be revealing too many games within the next twelve months. They have to keep some and we know it won't be Santa Monica's, likely won't be Quantic Dream's, Gravity Rush is likely going to be at TGS and GT7 will release before 2017. That means with Uncharted, Dreams, Horizon, The Last Guardian, Morpheus games and more coming, there's not much they could announce at E3 next year if they also reveal Sucker Punch's game or Sony Bend's game before E3. Maybe they reveal SS or Bend's at PGW and GT7 at E3 but the opposite makes more sense.

I expect the big Morpheus push to be at PAX Prime/Gamescom. Those shows are a lot more about hands-on and a lot less about announcements/conferences, and VR has traditionally made a huge splash at them since the earliest Oculus prototypes showed up. They're the ideal place to roll out VR solutions.

I think TGS will have Gravity Rush 2, the Level 5 RPG and the Bloodborne expansion.

Paris will have more Dreams, Quantic Dream reveal and a focus on smaller titles like Rime, Edith Finch and Wild.

PSX will have Uncharted 4 MP, GT7 reveal and the first footage of God of War.

The new Sucker Punch game and Sony Bend's game will be revealed next year, with both being 2017 releases.

Interviews like this only reinforce the reason I'm never too concerned about the questions raised like, "Where are all the 1st party games?" Because I know there is so many projects in the works, so many things happening the background that we don't even know about. Sony Bend's unknown new game, Sucker Punch is apparently working on something new, whatever Santa Monica's core group is doing, etc. These things take time and maybe I'm more patient that some, but I know it will work out in the end. And one of these years we're going to be bombarded with new stuff.

By the way, how can anyone not like Shu? He's such a genuine, down to earth guy.

Judging from Yoshida's comments in the interview, it sounds like that is exactly what they will do.

A lot of great stuff at this E3, and this interview put in perspective how much more is to come.

Looking forward to Toyama's next thing, whatever it is.

The strength of Sony's 3rd Party relations are allowing their first and second party studios breathing room for their games to be made. Things like Horizon which is by now 4 years in the making is a prime example of this.

I actually wanted him to be fired after losing Amy Hennig, the cancellation of Stig's new IP at Santa Monica that wasted like 3 years followed by the layoffs, layoffs at Sucker Punch, Driveclub flopping, Little Big Planet 3 releasing as a glitchy mess and flopping, The Order being delayed then flopping, Uncharted running at 30 fps at the PSX after ND's boasting of 60 fps, The Last Guardian turning into vaporware and a whole bunch of studios being MIA for years.

This was a very dark period for Sony Worldwide Studios and very frustrating for me after their amazing years on the PS3 but this E3 has restored my confidence in Sony and in Shuhei Yoshida. It's insane to think that GG's Horizon and Mm's Dreams both started development in 2011 and are only being announced now for release in 2016. Since LittleBigPlanet 2 released in January 2011 and Killzone 3 in February 2011, that means a 2016 release is at least a 5 year development period.

That is the amount of time it takes Rockstar to make a GTA game and I can't believe Sony let not one but TWO of their major studios do that. What's even more insane is that this was done for two games that are NEW IP's! This is a good reminder that Yoshida is a gamer, as well as a business man. I found myself agreeing with pretty much everything he said in this interview and completely understand why we had to wait so long for news on TLG and why the main teams of GG and Mm went MIA for years. Greatness takes time. I still haven't forgiven him for rushing LittleBigPlanet 3 out though. :p

Paris Game Show: Bend's game, Quantic Dream's game

I think they'll have to keep something for next year, or else they'll burst out everything :)

I had the biggest grin watching Shu's facial reaction to the Gravity Rush 2 and Quantic Dream questions. And his troll-back about Sucker Punch's new game.

Yep, especially so because they're open to the public and thus can be demonstrated to the consumer directly.

He's right thought. They are damned if they do damned if they don't. Guarantee that if they had taken up 10-15 minute son Morpheus, people would be telling them on stream "oh why did you spend so long on that, what about core games". I think they realize that it is more of a "you need to get people to strap this thing on to play it" rather than "here is a view of a vr game on the screen that we promises looks much more exciting when you use it that how bad it demos when you aren't using the device".

Definitely. PAX/Gamescom are shows filled with many more fans than E3. Morpheus is going to live or die on word of mouth more so than what reviewers say. A VR game that is more experience than game will get a bad rap from journalist as them saying "well it's not really a game" but if people hear from their friends that that same VR experience is amazing and like nothing they've seen before then it builds better confidence.

That was an amazing interview, really great questions and answers, it really helps that they're comfortable with each other. Haven't been following Kinda Funny Games, but I will now.

I love that it's more of an actual conversation about behind the scenes stuff that really interest people who follow the industry closely, instead of feeling like a quick Q&A going through all of the PR bullet points.

I doubt they'll show Sucker Punch's new game at PSX2. Feels too early for it to be shown. Infamous came out just last year, no?

GoW4, though, on the other hand, seems like a given. Shanon hinted at their presence at PSX2 being a big one last December.

It's so relaxed, fun and genuine. Hard to believe he's a top exec at a company. There's no PR responses, it's just taling and laughing like anyone else would taking about games.

For some reason I never put two and two together to see that yeah.. Quantic Dream is totally going to reveal their next thing at the Paris Game Show.

A little off-topic, but didn't Level-5 confirm that they would announce a PS4 RPG at E3?

Could this be a collaboration with SCEJ and be announced at TGS?

They were just confirming that there won't be AAA games from Sony on the Vita.

So bad news.

Nooooo! :O

I just want them to try. I've never seen the system advertised, AFAIK they've never dropped the price, and it's going to be hard to get folks on board if the main publisher isn't leading.
ugh...it's frustrating. Shu is so cool too.

Gravity Rush 2 is still called Gravity Rush 2 right? Shuhei never confirmed the title of what it is he played by Studio Japan. Bit apprehensive about what's going on with Toyama's team right now. Still no mention of even the remastered first game.

It's pretty clear that the game was initially for the Vita (you can see that by the reveal trailer) and then it was switched the the PS4. Toyama hinted at that earlier this year when he said that when they show it again people will understand why it's taken them so long to reveal it. So that's why we haven't heard or seen anything about it since.

Just because they won't hold a conference at Gamescom that doesn't mean that they won't announce anything. I hope they will announce something :D
