$300 jeans on, does that mean we dream wrong? - Official Denimhead Thread

A friend of mine wore a pair of STF into the ground. They always looked really bad. I'm not saying yours will by any means (you've always seemed like a cool guy, I've seen some of your SB/Stussy pick ups while lurking), but in my mind, the odds are against you.

Should have found some LVC 1947 501s. I see them being sold new for about $100 and they are much better quality.

I've heard people say the Dry Broken Twill SJ's have suspect build quality and the dye and fabric aren't they best. I'd like to hear an opinion once you get them. Apparently they're one of the easiest Nudies to break in.

How are the fits on Naked & Famous? I was planning on stopping by Neiman Marcus after work and trying on a pair or two of their WeirdGuys.

Thanks!

was at Barney's SF the other day and saw this ridiculousness:
FriFeb05191221AmericaLos_Angeles201.jpg

I just had to try them on and see how damn thick and heavy they were. HOLY CRAP, it hurts to walk in those. It felt like wearing cardboard covered in heavy canvas. I have the same cut in 31's and have no problem getting into them, but these gave me problems and hurt like hell fitting into them :P

$300 and limited to 200. Pretty retarded.

Instead of getting the Naked and Famous jeans, I ended up picking up a pair of selvedge Levis 514s from the SF Levis store.

Absolutely love them and will probably pick up another pair sometime. :D

I can appreciate a good pair of jeans, but almost everything in this head is way over my head. Anyone mind indoctrinating this lowly junior as a Denimhead?:D

EDIT: Actually, as a college student is it even worth it?

Yeah I saw this today and I jizzed. I'm going to try to hold off on buying any jeans (unless they have a pair of Grim Tim Dry Stretch Selvage in Black) but maybe pick up a shirt or two. Need to make sure not to blow all my cash since I've gotta furnish my new apartment.

Also the midwest snowstorm was actually great for my jeans. Since I got snow all up on the cuffs and everything it created what should be some really neat looking fades. The knee is starting to fade out and whiskers are forming as well. I've had some pretty strong honeycombs for a while already. I'm really loving these jeans and fit. My first pair of selvage jeans ever as well.

Well that sold out in like seconds for anything I was remotely interested in. Only one pair of raw jeans as well :/

Well, I'm glad I didn't miss out on much. D:

Anyone have seen these?
Unbranded Slim Straight Selvedge Denim - $78

They also have slim and tapered fits. I probably won't get it (I'm still waiting on my SJ's :<), but I'm just curious to see how people feel about it. It's unbranded, but it's cheap(ish). From what I read at other forums (which isn't much), is that they're pretty decent.

If anyone is actually thinking about it, use "THINKSPRING" for 20% off.

I'm still thinking about it. :(

They're decent, but if you're looking for 'decent' jeans I still think the LVC line is the way to go. Prewashes have nice fades and the 501 raws are <3

Made by Naked&Famous in sweatshops apparently.

I like coming into this thread just to see all the different brand names of jeans, they're easily the most creative ones ever :lol

Also Tobi is having 20% off all denim with coupon code: bottomsup. I've always been pleased when I shop there. Have Nudie, Naked & Famous, PRPS, Rock & Replublic etc etc etc

Ok, so I'm really considering a pair of APC New Standards with this discount, but I'd like some advice first.

I used to be a 32, but I started lifting heavy and gained ~30 lbs over the past year. My waist is about the same (my 32" waist shorts still fit), but my thighs and butt require me to buy 36x32, and most are boot cut because they fit better (trying to up my jeans game now). I have no problem getting jeans hemmed if necessary, but is there a type that would fit me better than others in raw denim? I would prefer to go with something <$200. Also, for sizing I was planning to just go with 35 (1 size down) which is available on tobi.com if I go with the APCs.

i'm afraid i'm the polar opposite - my butt is pretty nonexistent :lol and i don't own any apc myself.

but i do agree that you should size down 1 for APC as they will stretch quite a bit.

Haha I appreciate the honesty. I spoke with one of the people on that site and she recommended APC Rescues, which have been recommended in here before (I found out after I searched). I'll post up if I do end up going with them.

She also recommended WeSC (though they don't have them in my size so I won't be getting them). Anyone have any reviews on those? I couldn't find anything with a search.

These are the selvedge Levi 514s I got last week. I've been wearing them pretty much non-stop since I got them and they're awesome.

I also stopped at Barney's SF to check out those 24oz. Naked & Famous jeans, just touching the denim itself was enough to tell me how ridged they were - they felt pretty damn close to cardboard actually. :lol

Told you!!
I can't imagine how long it'll take to break in

:lol I seriously thought you were joking, but the moment I just touched the fabric, I was pretty much like 'no way in hell am I gonna try these on'. Definitely seeing was believing.

I finally read this thread and it seems there's a whole world of jeans out there I had no idea about! Anyway, I wouldn't mind trying this whole thing out one day as some of these look really nice. I just wear non-raw Levi / Lees mostly, but I never bought pre-faded / wrinkled ones as I thought they looked pretty bad (and seems pretty cheesy to go about it that way).

Based on some of the pics and comments here, I'm thinking about maybe going for a pair of APC New Standards. But I'd like just a bit of help, since some of the sizing info I've heard has been, err, confusing, and I don't think I could find these at any non-online store around here. I choose a size 32 waist 90% of the time and have usually gone for a relatively relaxed fit. I'm definitely not going for a skinny-jeans look or anything, but obviously not looking for baggy. So in terms of choosing the size / wearing it out:

1) I've heard things ranging from how they shrink to how you should size down at purchase. So, in the end, what size should a 32 guy go for, keeping in mind I don't mind (actually prefer) wearing a belt anyway?

2) So I'm guessing these jeans would just shrink as per normal (ie. just after the first wash). I don't have to worry about any more if I just wash in cold water?

3) So are these things supposed to fit somewhat tight to begin with and then naturally conform to your waist / legs?

4) As far as the dye goes, do these things stain stuff easily as compared to others? Want to know if I should maybe give them a wash to begin with or not.

Yeah, like I said, whole new world to me here! Just want to make sure I don't do anything stupid as I never normally spend all that much on clothes and I can't try 'em out first.

1: With APC size down 2 for New Standards, if you like them tight, size down 3. If you want more tighter jeans, go with the New Cures and size down 1. Should be the same with all other raw jean companys.

2: Right, they shrink just a tad the first time.

3: They'll be really tight the first couple wears. The longer you wear them and your body moves while you walk, sit, etc. your jeans will crease and form to your legs so they'll be very unique. If you carry a wallet in your back pocket, phone in your front pocket, you'll start seeing fades over time in those areas after your wash! Same with stacks and

4: Yeah very easy in fact. I don't suggest wearing light colored shoes with them, or shirts just until after the first wash.

Gaze in awe at these people's jeans and how their denim looks now:

I like slim straight fit jeans, would you recommend two or three sizes down? I wear a size 32 if that helps.

I decided against the APCs for now because the coupon didn't work, and I can get them at full price later.

I did order a pair of 501 STFs, though. Should I do anything to them before wearing them or after a few wears (hot water soak, etc), or should I just wear them for a while and do the wash after a few months? I want high contrast fades.

"STF" stands for shrink-to-fit.. i highly recommend hot soaking them before your first wear. then give them at least 6 months of lovin before actually washing them with soap.

what will happen is that you will wear them with no soak, develop fades and then when you do wash them, they will shrink like mad and all the fades will move around and your body will begin to create new ones where the old fades shifted out of place.

i'd say 2 because you like slim/straight. 3 will give you a real heavy taper

Thanks! I'll soak them and then love them hard for 6 months, I'll post up when I wash them, or if I end up getting another pair.

godspeed!

i really, really want some slim levi's for the summer. my staples are going to be the slim levi's, nudies after i remove the back pocket stitching + solid color oxford shirts + black captoe boots.

i read something on a forum and it really struck a cord. makes me want to keep concentrating on my gym routine and not so much with all this vest/tie/accessory shenanigans.

I'm by no means a denim fan, but I do hold an appreciation for people who take their interests very seriously in spite of price.

That said, I disagree with the OP's stance on Diesel. I own two pairs and they're the best jeans I've ever owned, going well with everything else I have (I'm a huge fan of Burberry t-shirts and sweaters). They're good for people who want quality but can't be bothered to have to look into lesser known brands. I'm pretty sure I can find even better ones as I grow more used to the idea of expensive jeans, but I actually hate shopping for clothes, so I'm not so picky.

Diesel jeans aren't terrible but the overall theme of this thread should be renamed to "Raw Jean discussion" rather than Denimhead. Diesel makes some jeans with fantastic washes and decent quality. However if you do apples to apples they don't hold a candle against some Skulls, Canes, Nudies, N&F, Somet, APC.

to be fair, i went through 3 pairs of diesel zathans in college. they fit exceptionally well but they all ripped pretty easily and the washes have only gotten gaudier over the years.

Well if you're in the 150-300 range for jeans you almost have a "pick two" it seems between quality, wash and fit. Like my Nudie Ralfs are exceptional quality and fit like a dream, but are obviously unwashed. Diesel, 7FAM, R&R all have great washes and fits but their quality is balls. PRPS, imo, have good quality and washes but fit like a sack of potatos.

I wear washed denim. The LVC collection is what I reccomend to everyone and I wish they came up more in this thread. RRL jeans are GREAT, I size up because they're slim, but they're dope. Uniqlo also has some really ill washes that are similar to more expensive brands (Neighborhood especially).

If you plan on getting jeans that are $150-$200 I would personally go with 3sixteen. They are the best bang for the buck at $150-$165 and they look sick as hell worn in.

for what it's worth, i only own 1 item from 3sixteen (toggle coat) and it looks great but the quality is kind of shoddy

You should call them up. I have 2 of the military shirts and they are good quality.

Do pre-washed jeans fade as well as Dry Denim if you don't wash them for 6 months? I've got a pair of Levi's 501s that don't look very faded, so I was wondering if I should carry on washing them as normal or try and fade them.
