360 Elite problems?

HaloFans said:
MS is fixing those 3ROL problems now. Why are you focusing on the past?

This thread was made of failure when it started.

You're just going to say don't buy X360 until the 65nm chipsets come out.

I'm just going to say buy one and have fun. Just be sure the second heatsinks are there, and you are ok.

This is of course, if you are going to buy one now.

Because they're not fixed YET, it's VERY, VERY CLOSE. But not yet.

This thread was made of failure when people fail to realize that some people don't like being hassled, like I have been this entire thread just for looking out for the OP's best interest. I never once said don't buy a 360, I said I don't even own a PS3.

He can't have fun with a PS3? It exclusively has the two franchises he wants! He's got a handful of great PS3 games out now, a stellar fall lineup and thousands of PS2 games, plus you can even throw Blu-ray and wi-fi into the mix, open USB, plus free online!

Jesus H Christ, I give up, you people make me sick. I've changed my mind, now I say ONLY BUY A PS3, just to upset certain people in this thread.

Wow. Way to go with reading comprehension.

You can't say they're fixing them because we have no idea if this is going to fix it... And, how are you to know you're getting one with the other heatsinks? Just look for the boxes with stickers saying "NOW WITH MORE HEATSINKS!!!"? They're not marked at all... You have to take the word of that best buy employee, "we just got it in yesterday, and straight from MS not the warehouse"...

Who knows how long it's going to take until these are in circulation... Stores probably have an abundance of stock left with the old units, it's just not worth it.... yet...

on a side note: There should be a stickied thread already "Buy a 360 at your own risk" just to stop the clutter of these threads...

I haven't slept, you've put me in a pissy mood and I'm sick of all the anti-PS3 FUD and the gang-raping by the irrational 360 defense force.

If the OP hasn't pulled his hair out by now, just buy a PS3, it's got God of War 3 and MGS4 coming. Heavenly Sword will be out in a few months and it's like Goddess of War. The PS3 will last you with its superior build quality for years to come and you'll have more games than you'll ever need. You're a grad student, you'll have it after you're done with school and it'll still be the #1 most powerful system, you can buy yourself a nice place and a nice 1080p set and relax knowing that you have a functional system. Just forget the 360 all together, it's not worth the hassle.

How exactly is it better to wait two months than send it in for repairs, which takes much less time?

Why risk entering the recycled refurb lottery so close to MS [potentially] getting their shit together?

And regarding the 360/PS3 thing, I'd recommend buying a Dreamcast to tide you over until Christmas, where the prices for both should be cheaper.

i honestly think buying it after christmas will basically assure you'll get one with an extra heatsink, but i doubt you'd want to wait that long.

just wait until you feel confident you'll get a revised one

Haha, seriously, not a bad reason!

Thanks to everyone who offered advice...I'm gonna wait till MS rolls out the new & improved systems. But I have a feeling I'll wind up with a PS3. I'm still using my launch PS2, which says something for a company putting out reliable hardware, plus I don't think I can resist God of War plus MGS.

oh come on. you're throwing out FUD left and right against the 360, and people call you on it, and you pretend that it's irrational. people wouldn't have been jumping on you if you'd just said, the 360s are unreliable and if that's really what you want, you should wait. instead you start saying they will all die and they're made of cheap parts.

I'd wait for the revision and then wait some more if reliability has improved. The games will always be there but having to deal with shit MS support is a deal breaker.

I finally used my Best buy voucher from my last X360 last night and picked up an Elite made on June 29th. The extra heatsink is in there. No worries here. I am just going to focus on enjoying it.

Nice to see the new heatsink is in there. Really want to know if anyone has been able to get there hands on a July issue Elite.

I still say you don't know whether or not the issues are fixed but I will agree and drop the whole thing. If you want to buy a console, get one that has the games you want to play not one that may or not break. I could walk out of my house and get hit by a car but that doesn't mean I'll stay at home all day and hide under the bed.

Wii has more than last-gen visuals. It's an entirely different gaming experience as opposed to traditional PS360 gaming.

I actually said that - "...that offer unique game experiences". You should try and read other people's posts as closely as you do your own.

Since my blog has been getting so much love from people trying to discredit me, because they think I'm a threat to their precious 360

Self-aggrandizing much?

But you say it like the stable console won't have games.

I didn't say it won't ever. I suggested it doesn't currently.

You can't tell me with a straight face that you're not overly pro-360 compared to PS3? We've butted heads in the past over this.

Actually, I can tell you with a perfectly straight face I'm not "overly pro-360", since that's your ridiculous notion based on, as far as I can tell, nothing - aside from my being critical of your overly pro-PS3 posting habits.

It's amazing to me that a thread can be started asking about buying a 360, you appear and advise the OP half a dozen times to buy a PS3 instead, and then - when people balk and bring up your clear bias ("entertainment" blog, good one) - you start tossing around comments like "Xbot Defense Force" and accusing people like me of bias, discrediting any remark that could be even viewed as weak support for the 360 as "anecdotal" in favor of your own equally anecdotal evidence.

I own all 3 "next-gen" consoles, and yes - omg! - I play the PS3 the least of all of them. That doesn't mean I have a bias towards the others or a bias against the PS3 - it means, and you might want to sit down for this, Barnolde, the Wii and 360 offer better and more games right now. I don't think that makes me a totally irrational XDF drone, but maybe I'm wrong.

You know, you could just state your opinion and move on, like most people.

Since we have about 5 of these threads a day, that would enable you to post your treatise on the horribleness of M$ 5 times a day, which I think is pretty good exposure.

So instead of fixing the "x-clamp"/solder issue, Microsoft is just installing another heat-sink (I wish I had posted this comment in the "Elite has a 2nd heatsink" thread...).

Of course, they could run into legal problems if they just adjusted the x-clamp as though nothing happened.

I guess that's true. I don't have any particular faith that the new chips will be hugely more reliable though, especially compared to the cooling revision. As been said, things do actually break on their own too.

you're apparently so bitter and upset your reading comprehension has dropped to nearly non-existant. my point was that you didn't stop at the things that were facts, you started throwing out other things, that may or may not even be true. then when people call you on it, you call them irrational.

wtf does feeling the system have to do anything? how do you know they're made of cheap parts? you've gotten it from that article and just keep tossing it around, as if that's also part of the death sentence. it's FUD, dude, and that's the problem. you're pissed at other people for tossing FUD, but you're turning around doing exactly the same.

To the OP, I own a PS3 and 360. If you like games, get a 360. The PS3 will get better variety as time goes by, but right now the offerings are paltry for my tastes. Two games that I can recommend for the PS3 are Resistance (Angel's Lair was awesome) and NGS (which can't help but win). I think MechDX and Denogginizer said that their recently purchased Elite's have the GPU heatsink, so if you buy one after their manufacture date you'll be alright.

The new Elites have a 2nd heatsink out of the box. Granted it's just a quick and dirty fix and you should wait for the 65nm boxes but I'm sure it helps. I still haven't had any problems with my system which I got late Feb, so while the RRoD is a common problem it's not everyone just most people, regardless I feel like I'm on borrowed time.

elites have been shipping with the extra heatsinks since late march. If you just pop the tab to see the manufacturing date you can be pretty certain it will have it if the date is april or later(which should be almost all elites in stores now).

It's made of cheap parts, because it came out with a $299 model in November 2005 and the defects still persist and it has a goddamn $6 production cost, because the system is still unchanged for now. MS didn't even admit there were problems until recently, which is what, 18 months after launch? If it wasn't full of cheap parts, it wouldn't break so much or run so loud and hot, simple as that. The PS3 and Wii and Xbox1 do not have this problem (they're also not like jet engines taking off and while the PS3 and Wii run very hot, they do not fail like the 360 does, everyone knows this), especially on such a large scale. People don't want recalls of systems with quality components.

Plus, there's also the disc scratching, which has spawned 2 class action lawsuits. From reading XS, it's because there isn't some felt (worth a fraction of a cent tops) on the tray itself to prevent the disc from hitting the tray. It's just very poorly designed, which is why they're trying to fix things now, straight from Robbie Bach himself.

I won't even respond to soco, because of the bolded stuff from before, he's clearly blind.

Also, people are getting actual quotes of 4-6 weeks, which again is around a month (31 days for me), 1/12 of a year, aka too goddamn long, because I've waited that time and it's not fun.

By the way, I have said this before in other threads, I Bought my X-box 360 core system in Febuary of this year, and I haven't yet had one problem with the system ( guess so much for the cheap parts theroy). I guess it currently cool to hate on the X-box 360.

If it's made in China, it's cheap parts.

Dude, you haven't opened the Xbox 360.

PS3 Blu-Ray disks run slower. They need installation screens, so that part of the game is cached for loading times. How come you didn't acknowledge that?

All of the X360 content runs off the DVD and require a fast read rate. That's why it sounds like the X360 is taking off.

Experience pays i guess.

Well it's not only experience in making the hardware, but experience in screwing up. Sony learned from the PS2 that it costs more money to fix a problem, than to spend some money initially to get it right the first time.

Funnily enough MS learned this lesson with the original Xbox and the issues with its powercord.

So for the 360 they introduced the surge protector/powercord brick, which probably cost them some money.

And Nintendo learned way back when with the NES, as people had to blow to clean out their games...I had an NES die on me, but I never had a problem with any Nintendo product after that.

Hey everyone,

I'm another on-the-fencer about which system to get, PS3 or 360 (I own a Wii). I'm wondering if any Elite owners here have had the RRoD problem, or if the Elites are indeed more reliable. Cause if they are, I'd probably get one. Thanks.

Dan

I have a day 1 elite and have not experienced any issues. I would, without a doubt, pick a 360 over a PS3. The lack of games is huge on the PS3 so you will get much more out of your PS3... not to mention achievements if you are into sorta thing :)

Who cares where it's made? Google reveals it's made in China, Taiwain and Japan.

Who cares if I haven't opened it? I DON'T WANT TO VOID MY WARRANTY SINCE I KNOW I'LL NEED IT.

Oh christ, not read speeds again, they're basically pretty similar with the bits and bytes and the 360 reading DVD-DL's at 8x. Plus PS3 has a HDD in every system it can rely on. I'd rather wait a little while longer so my games don't scratch, plus all Blu-rays have a protective coating against scratching, lolz.

Oh and there's this little gem:
There seems to be a bit of confusion about Blu-ray's read speeds in comparison to DVD's read speeds specially given the Xbox 360's 12x DVD rating. I am going to attempt to clarify the differences.

Difference that should be noted in a DVD vs Blu-ray discussion is that DVD's are Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) and Blu-ray is Constant Linear Velocity (CLV).
This is important to note because each of DVD's X ratings have a minimum and a maximum read speed and the advertised read speed is taken from the maximum, consequently a DVD drives maximum read speed is almost never realized. On the other hand Blu-ray's only has one constant read speed.

At 2x Blu-ray can read as fast as 12x DVD's minimum read speed. At just 3x Blu-ray is comparable to DVD at 12x; through the first half of the disc 3x Blu-ray is faster, through the second half of the disc 12x DVD is faster.
And at only 4x Blu-ray manages to best a 12x DVD's maximum read speed by 9%.

Just stop spreading more anti-PS3 nonsense, it's quite tiresome.

Wow, he's still at it, eh? :lol

Setting customer expectations at 4-6 weeks turnaround time is the party line at the moment... designed primarily to underpromise and overdeliver on that commitment. From experience, I'd put the average repair time (unless something goes horribly wrong) in the ballpark of 3 to 4 1/2 weeks currently. I've actually been pleasantly surprised in some recent cases to see them take as little as 2 weeks.

In general, if a customer enters the repair process worried about whether they'll have their console back in time for Halo 3... and they get it back ahead of schedule... I'm thinking they'll be pretty happy.

I've got nothing better to do than piss in Xbot's cheerios apparently. See what happens when I try to be fair and tell him to buy a 360, I'll never make that mistake again. I'll only recommend PS3 from here on out, much less headaches associated with it.

I had a 31 day turnaround and someone I know was quoted as 4-6 weeks. Don't give me that 2 weeks bullshit, it's not 2006 anymore.
