360 Elite problems?

yeah, can't we just have one running thread? someone list all the pros and cons in the OP or someshit so people can just scan those and decide :lol
:lol There's another I saw today "On the Fence Buyer -"

Right, though I haven't heard of anyone who had a 3ROL problem with the new heatsinks.

And I haven't heard of a monkey being able to use silverware, but that doesn't make it true.

No offense, but he made a thread asking for help on a major purchase, your guesses aren't helping.

You are correct sir.

Just trying to help. The red rings are no fun and waiting a month+ for a replacement system isn't fun either.

How are the latest elites on noise? My current 360 is so loud it makes playing games unbearable.

About the same, maybe slightly quieter, but the 360 in general is loud as hell because of the DVD drive.

Barnolde, what systems do you own?

My little brother is currently playing Crackdown on a 3rd replacement 360 that we got back from MS about a month ago. It's louder than my previous system and it's given me a couple problems before. It doesn't have the new heatsink, but it hasn't died yet. Personally, the main reason I want a PS3 for myself is because it's more reliable and I don't want to have to deal with red rings and sending systems back and waiting for returns. I'd rather just pay the $20 extra for the convenience. Like everyone else, I know the 360 has more games and has the omfg goty Halo 3 coming up, but it has more headaches and like you, I'm a college student who doesn't want to deal with them.

Barnolde said:
That's cool, but you have no proof, but it's nice to believe things. It's still full of cheap components, you just don't know. That's the keyword, guessing.

360 = unreliable, buy it later as 65nm is right around the corner and that should help.
PS3 = stable, buy it anytime.

Sounds like you also have no proof that the new 360 are just as unreliable as the earlier one without the extra heat sink but that is not stopping you from spreading a bit of FUD.

The bottom line is that the systems, ALL the systems, are covered by a 3 year waranty so you are covered no matter what happens. I for one buy consoles based on the games they provide not on whether or not I'll be unlucky and have one break down on me.

There have already been several cases of multi-platform games being better on the 360 so buying the more expensive PS3 makes no sense if you are looking to play the best version of certain games. Still if you prefer to pay more and for the time being, getting a bit less on the games front, by all means get a PS3. I got both and admittedly it didn't kill me.

In all fairness however he DOES have a lot of experience with the innards of the 360, certainly a lot more than you do. His experience with what is wrong with the 360 does count for something.

Or we could just continue to point out that his name has the world Halo in it therefore his opinion means nothing.

I think it's worth mentioning that - like most 360 owners (yes, most) - I've had no problems whatsoever with my (launch) 360.

There's "buyer beware" advice, and then there's fearmongering... this thread seems to have lots of both. : /

Yeah, I didn't imply that, but we don't know yet if the new heatsinks solve the problem, no?
I believe they will. If you ever read my DIY thread, we all know it was the X-Clamps that cause the X360 failures due to excess heat accumulating in the GPU areas. By adding a better cooling implementation, the X-Clamps don't become a problem.

Why did this become a buy a PS3 now thread?

gandm said:

You might as well say that we don't know if removing EE and GS from the PS3 will cause a pandemic of system failures too.

What FUD? I'm saying if he wants a 360, just to wait a couple months for 65nm.

He doesn't want to deal with broken systems.

I didn't know he had experience, I know I've had multiple issues, there's been a lot of negative 360 news lately and there's a giant ****ing thread devoted to defects.

Like I keep saying, want a reliable system now, get a PS3. Want a 360, just wait a bit for 65nm.

Barnolde's Blog --> http://yknowthingsbreak.blogspot.com/

Oh wait... yeah, there's that.

And ironically enough, I agree with his stance. If you want more peace of mind, wait for the 65nm and cheaper price point. No harm in that. You won't be playing Halo 3 right away, but so what. Plenty of other great games out there on other systems.

But are the Elites breaking down anywhere near as much as a launch-day Pro? Not that I've seen.

Yes, you've made that point very clear. :lol

TC: If you're nervous, buy the 360 at some place that allows no-hassle exchanges. Odds are you won't have a problem at all, but in the event that you do, you can either deal with MS (btw, the "omg 6 week wait!!1!1!) talk is - for the most part - BS), ot just return it for another one.

It's not going to cause system failures as evidenced by it's launch in Europe. It'll just make playing PS2 games a lot better.

When he made the thread on August 1st as opposed to October 1st.

I'm aware of the X-Clamps, I read Xbox-Scene quite a bit. I'm also aware that it's not JUST X-Clamps that cause issues, there's a multitude of problems associated with it, most of which will hopefully be alleviated by 65nm and the second heatsink which is due to come in a month or two, which is why I keep saying, if you want a 360, just wait a little bit.

Wait a second, my original advice was to buy one NOW. No need to continue the system war in here. If you care to give me a link to your thread I'm interested though.

Yeah, I made the blog in anger after my system died again (hey, had to do something to kill a month's time) and to poke fun at a Peter Moore quote.

I want Halo 3 more than any other game, but I'd rather stay headache free, so I won't be buying myself a 360 until they get this shit straightened out.

If you get a 2nd heatsink in yours and they're still 90nm. 65nm is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. Personally, I'd just wait a little while if I was going to get a 360 so I don't have to deal with a 6-8 week wait for a replacement system down the road.

Have you PERSONALLY waited 6-8 weeks for a replacement? The longest we've ever waited was 3 weeks from initial phone call to replacement system in-hand. Shortest was 10 days. The 3 week wait was right now (just got it back), so even with the possible "swell" from warranty returns after the program was announced, it's not too terrible. Granted, it DOES suck, but 6-8 weeks (in the USA at least) is complete disinformation.

And yeah, the PS3 has some good stuff coming (Drake's fortune looks GREAT), but there is almost nothing there now, and the PS store is a JOKE compared to Xbox live marketplace. There's also almost nothing in the PS store online - even the demo selection is anemic, for god's sake! As a result, we use our PS3 at home almost exclusively as a Blu-Ray movie player. The last game I finished on it was Resistance.

Actually, the 3 year warranty only covers the RROD IIRC. (XYZ PDQ)

Pretty certain the RROD is the generic system failure warning. It's just predominantly caused by the GPU going nuclear.

My first time was only a couple weeks which was in 2006, it wasn't bad. The second time was over a month, 31 days which was a couple months ago. I had counted on it coming back before I went on vacation and had a friend check for it every day. It ended up coming back a week after I returned from vacation :lol With more systems dying and the warranty extended and the busy holiday season coming up, the time to get a system back isn't gonna shrink.

And that's another reason why if you buy a PS3 now, for EE/GS, you've got a healthy backlog of PS2 games, I recommend Ico and SotC.

I've made my point clear many times. 360 has more games right now, PS3 is more stable right now.

I think the OP got scared off and is just gonna stick to his Wii :lol

I have had no issues with my 360 what-so-ever. What does that mean? Everyone has had a different experience with 360 problems. Some have had none, some have several. That doesn't mean that all 360s should be avoided whether or not they have a waranty or extra heat sinks. To say otherwise is to spread FUD.

You have no proof that the extra sinks in the 360 aren't working but that isn't stopping you from recommending the PS3 over the 360 cause its more reliable. What about people who want the largest next-gen game library to play, I don't know, games? You do a disservice to gamers when you recommend a game console based solely on hardware problems that might not even happen!

The huge defect thread also has several posts from the same people in it as well. It is not like each post is from a unique person that has had issues. And considering the 5 million+ 360s in the US, the unique people with issues are a drop in the bucket. Have some people had problems with the 360s hardware? Sure but should those problems preclude any and all others from buying a 360? Hell no.

I say you just wait on both.

Wait for the 360 to become more reliable/cheaper.

Wait for the PS3 to accumulate a decent selection of games.

That blog is hilarious. So many bitter tears. :lol

But yeah, just wait for the Falcon revision. Although my X-clamp-less 360 is still trucking along (been running 24 hours a day for 3 weeks now muling in FFXI), I'm going to pick up a 65nm 360 eventually, especially if MS manages to quiet down the DVD drive.

The pictures I've seen of the heat pipe and additional heat sink for the GPU make sense though. The original design isn't very good at venting the heat generated by the GPU. I noticed a huge difference in the amount of heat output from the GPU side after doing the fan shroud mod.

No, but it's been established that until they fix things, if you buy a 360, it's gonna die.

Then I guess this thread is just one giant piece of FUD:http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=148060

No, I have no proof the heatsinks are or aren't going to help. Which is why I keep saying WAIT for 65nm, for the extra protection, that way you've got the 2nd heatsink AND 65nm, that's when I'm going to buy one for myself for Halo 3. Might not happen is a funny thing, because that's a gamble and I don't think he wants to take a gamble.

The 360 is the PS2 of this gen, the defects are through the roof, it's NOT a drop in the bucket. That's already been established with N'Gai demanding a recall and this new 3 year warranty which was extended from 1 year, which was extended from 90 days.

I think people are just objecting to someone recommending a PS3 :lol I'm saying 360, but I'm saying take a precaution and just wait for 65nm, he's waited this long and if he wants a 360, I say he should just wait a little while longer, he can play some Wii Bowling in the meantime.

Ah, forgot about that. This is the ONLY compelling argument for getting a PS3 right now (before the ones with the actual PS2 hardware stripped out hit). That emulation crap has worked "so well" on the 360. Real PS2 hardware in the PS3 FTW.

But PS3 can upscale PS2! Clearly he wants a next-gen otherwise he would've said PS2. I myself just sold my slim PS2, damn fine system and I didn't get it until six years after the system came out, because the early PS2 was a piece of shit, same thing with the PS1, I had to play that mofo upside down.

Then I feel sorry for most gamers' low standards, because myself, I DON'T WANT A DEFECTIVE SYSTEM (early models of: PS1, PS2, 360). The 360 is a helluva lot more unreliable than the SNES or 3DO. I've got a Genesis model 1 that still works perfectly, it's got tons of games and is dirt cheap, maybe he should just get a Genesis.

Well I'm a full-time grad student, so $480 is a lot to me. Sorry, but not everyone has the same amount of disposable income (or rich parents to buy them shit).

My thing is, MGS and God of War are pretty much my favorite games. But the 360's lineup is hard to argue with. Only thing really holding me back is the hardware problems. I really don't want to have to be sending my console to MS for repairs.

You answered your own question.... If you like those games, get a PS3... the games hitting this fall look to be awesome... New IP's coming from proven devs, and proven IP's coming from proven devs...

The 360 has some awesome games, but it's not worth the trouble when they die on you... I had other consoles to play when mine went (and is on lifesupport again it sounds) so it wasn't AS bad, but took them a lil over 3 weeks of business days to get it back in my house... It's the most faulty and slapped together console ever, stay away from it until they fix their problems instead of throwing band-aid's on it... It's a lot of money, and if you're set on the 360, wait a couple months at the very least until they get the new units out there and the old one's are out of circulation...

We should be able to donate our pre-65nm X360s to a museum in 10 years or so if they've managed to inexplicably 'defy death' without so much as a single repair. They could call it 'The Xbox That Wouldn't Die' and could have a little tickerboard counting the number of seconds it has lived and played games without experiencing 3RL.

Gamers want systems that offer unique game experiences and/or lots of good games, to the point they'll settle for last-gen visuals (Wii) or flaky hardware (360).

The 360 is a helluva lot more unreliable than the SNES or 3DO.

Reading comprehension... I was saying people would generally pick an unreliable system that had lots of great games over a stable console that didn't.

This thread is stupid.

To the OP:

Buy an Elite, with the 2nd Heatsink (of which I think MOST, if not nearly ALL Elites on shelves have it) and the long warranty, you should have no problems, if you do, however, MS will fix them for you. Seems like a win/win to me.

No, I'm saying he wants a 360 or PS3.

Wii has more than last-gen visuals. It's an entirely different gaming experience as opposed to traditional PS360 gaming. The fact that 360 owners settle for flaky hardware is why it's been nearly 2 years before MS even admitted there's a problem.

Since my blog has been getting so much love from people trying to discredit me, because they think I'm a threat to their precious 360 (even though I said get one, just wait), this seems fitting:
gse_multipart59604.jpg

Reading comprehension... I was saying people would generally pick an unreliable system that had lots of great games over a stable console that didn't.
But you say it like the stable console won't have games. It has a stellar fall lineup and the two franchises HE WANTS and PS3 is the only place for MGS and GoW.

Of course. (rolls eyes)

You can't tell me with a straight face that you're not overly pro-360 compared to PS3? We've butted heads in the past over this.

Why? Because I want hardware that won't ****ing break randomly? Give me a break. I've played the 360 plenty as evidenced by my gamercard, I want Halo 3 like a fiend, my only agenda is that I hate crappy hardware. The OP made a thread asking a question before everyone scared him off. I merely answered it and informed him of two options, one of which even involved buying a 360!

Why is it so hard to understand that some folks aren't interested in dealing with the potential hassle of returning their 360? I have one and mine's still alive... but if I were buying now I would definitely wait for the revision (and evidence that it alleviates the problem). Sitting on the phone with customer support for hours to wait weeks for a returned system that might very well fail doesn't strike me as a "win".

Seriously.

I hate being hassled. I'd rather pay for convenience. It's why I have DSL over 56K, it costs more, but it's more convenient.

MS is fixing those 3ROL problems now. Why are you focusing on the past? Your picture has those 3ROL.

This thread was made of failure when it started.

You're just going to say don't buy X360 until the 65nm chipsets come out.

I'm just going to say buy one and have fun. Just be sure the second heatsinks are there, and you are ok.

This is of course, if you are going to buy one now.

DSL has problems, too. I had times when DSL tore down my land line and didn't have service for two days!!! I still use it though because it's faster than 56K. I had it serviced several times an year before it would work rock-solid.
