Yeah, I didn't imply that, but we don't know yet if the new heatsinks solve the problem, no?HaloFans said:The new heatsinks weren't in there.
dlobro1080 said:Barnolde, what systems do you own?
Barnolde said:That's cool, but you have no proof, but it's nice to believe things. It's still full of cheap components, you just don't know. That's the keyword, guessing.
360 = unreliable, buy it later as 65nm is right around the corner and that should help.
PS3 = stable, buy it anytime.
Barnolde said:No offense, but he made a thread asking for help on a major purchase, your guesses aren't helping.
I believe they will. If you ever read my DIY thread, we all know it was the X-Clamps that cause the X360 failures due to excess heat accumulating in the GPU areas. By adding a better cooling implementation, the X-Clamps don't become a problem.gandm said:Yeah, I didn't imply that, but we don't know yet if the new heatsinks solve the problem, no?
You might as well say that we don't know if removing EE and GS from the PS3 will cause a pandemic of system failures too.gandm said:Yeah, I didn't imply that, but we don't know yet if the new heatsinks solve the problem, no?
DarkMage619 said:Sounds like you also have no proof that the new 360 are just as unreliable as the earlier one without the extra heat sink but that is not stopping you from spreading a bit of FUD.
The bottom line is that the systems, ALL the systems, are covered by a 3 year waranty so you are covered no matter what happens. I for one buy consoles based on the games they provide not on whether or not I'll be unlucky and have one break down on me.
There have already been several cases of multi-platform games being better on the 360 so buying the more expensive PS3 makes no sense if you are looking to play the best version of certain games. Still if you prefer to pay more and for the time being, getting a bit less on the games front, by all means get a PS3. I got both and admittedly it didn't kill me.

Fearmongering? Whatever could you mean?Vrolokus said:I think it's worth mentioning that - like most 360 owners (yes, most) - I've had no problems whatsoever with my (launch) 360.
There's "buyer beware" advice, and then there's fearmongering... this thread seems to have lots of both. : /

Wait a second, my original advice was to buy one NOW. No need to continue the system war in here. If you care to give me a link to your thread I'm interested though.HaloFans said:I believe they will. Oh wait... yeah, there's that.
And ironically enough, I agree with his stance. If you want more peace of mind, wait for the 65nm and cheaper price point. No harm in that. You won't be playing Halo 3 right away, but so what. Plenty of other great games out there on other systems.
But are the Elites breaking down anywhere near as much as a launch-day Pro? Not that I've seen.

Barnolde said:If you get a 2nd heatsink in yours and they're still 90nm. 65nm is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. Personally, I'd just wait a little while if I was going to get a 360 so I don't have to deal with a 6-8 week wait for a replacement system down the road.
Actually, the 3 year warranty only covers the RROD IIRC. (XYZ PDQ)f_elz said:get an elite. if it stops working or gives you the rrod. msft will fix it for free. 3 yr warranty sounds good no?

vireland said:Have you PERSONALLY waited 6-8 weeks for a replacement? The longest we've ever waited was 3 weeks from initial phone call to replacement system in-hand. Shortest was 10 days. The 3 week wait was right now (just got it back), so even with the possible "swell" from warranty returns after the program was announced, it's not too terrible. Granted, it DOES suck, but 6-8 weeks (in the USA at least) is complete disinformation.
And yeah, the PS3 has some good stuff coming (Drake's fortune looks GREAT), but there is almost nothing there now, and the PS store is a JOKE compared to Xbox live marketplace. There's also almost nothing in the PS store online - even the demo selection is anemic, for god's sake! As a result, we use our PS3 at home almost exclusively as a Blu-Ray movie player. The last game I finished on it was Resistance.
It's not going to cause system failures as evidenced by it's launch in Europe. It'll just make playing PS2 games a lot better.

Pretty certain the RROD is the generic system failure warning. It's just predominantly caused by the GPU going nuclear.mcgarrett said:Actually, the 3 year warranty only covers the RROD IIRC. (XYZ PDQ)

Barnolde said:What FUD? I'm saying if he wants a 360, just to wait a couple months for 65nm.
He doesn't want to deal with broken systems.
I didn't know he had experience, I know I've had multiple issues, there's been a lot of negative 360 news lately and there's a giant ****ing thread devoted to defects.
Like I keep saying, want a reliable system now, get a PS3. Want a 360, just wait a bit for 65nm.

Barnolde said:And that's another reason why if you buy a PS3 now, for EE/GS, you've got a healthy backlog of PS2 games, I recommend Ico and SotC.
I've made my point clear many times. 360 has more games right now, PS3 is more stable right now.
DarkMage619 said:I have had no issues with my 360 what-so-ever. What does that mean? Everyone has had a different experience with 360 problems. Some have had none, some have several. That doesn't mean that all 360s should be avoided whether or not they have a waranty or extra heat sinks. To say otherwise is to spread FUD.
You have no proof that the extra sinks in the 360 aren't working but that isn't stopping you from recommending the PS3 over the 360 cause its more reliable. What about people who want the largest next-gen game library to play, I don't know, games? You do a disservice to gamers when you recommend a game console based solely on hardware problems that might not even happen!
The huge defect thread also has several posts from the same people in it as well. It is not like each post is from a unique person that has had issues. And considering the 5 million+ 360s in the US, the unique people with issues are a drop in the bucket. Have some people had problems with the 360s hardware? Sure but should those problems preclude any and all others from buying a 360? Hell no.

But yeah, just wait for the Falcon revision. Although my X-clamp-less 360 is still trucking along (been running 24 hours a day for 3 weeks now muling in FFXI), I'm going to pick up a 65nm 360 eventually, especially if MS manages to quiet down the DVD drive.
The pictures I've seen of the heat pipe and additional heat sink for the GPU make sense though. The original design isn't very good at venting the heat generated by the GPU. I noticed a huge difference in the amount of heat output from the GPU side after doing the fan shroud mod.
Vrolokus said:Then maybe the OP should buy a PS2.
Most gamers would prefer games over "stability". I'd rather have a SNES that worked half the time over a 3DO that worked perfectly.

dlobro1080 said:Well I'm a full-time grad student, so $480 is a lot to me. Sorry, but not everyone has the same amount of disposable income (or rich parents to buy them shit).
My thing is, MGS and God of War are pretty much my favorite games. But the 360's lineup is hard to argue with. Only thing really holding me back is the hardware problems. I really don't want to have to be sending my console to MS for repairs.
Barnolde said:360 Defense Force assembled, I hope the OP made his decision.l
Barnolde said:But PS3 can upscale PS2! Clearly he wants a next-gen otherwise he would've said PS2. I myself just sold my slim PS2, damn fine system and I didn't get it until six years after the system came out, because the early PS2 was a piece of shit, same thing with the PS1, I had to play that mofo upside down.
Son of Godzilla said:Well to be fair, you are insane.

Then I feel sorry for most gamers' low standards,
The 360 is a helluva lot more unreliable than the SNES or 3DO.

No, I'm saying he wants a 360 or PS3.Vrolokus said:Are you saying upscaled past-gen games are next-gen? :lol
Gamers want systems that offer unique game experiences and/or lots of good games, to the point they'll settle for last-gen visuals (Wii) or flaky hardware (360).
But you say it like the stable console won't have games. It has a stellar fall lineup and the two franchises HE WANTS and PS3 is the only place for MGS and GoW.Reading comprehension... I was saying people would generally pick an unreliable system that had lots of great games over a stable console that didn't.
Of course. (rolls eyes)

Why is it so hard to understand that some folks aren't interested in dealing with the potential hassle of returning their 360? I have one and mine's still alive... but if I were buying now I would definitely wait for the revision (and evidence that it alleviates the problem). Sitting on the phone with customer support for hours to wait weeks for a returned system that might very well fail doesn't strike me as a "win".AlteredBeast said:Buy an Elite, with the 2nd Heatsink (of which I think MOST, if not nearly ALL Elites on shelves have it) and the long warranty, you should have no problems, if you do, however, MS will fix them for you.
