360 HD DVD Drive impressions

If you compare the lists, the number of Academy Award winners on the current HD-DVD list is much higher than the Bluray list. Yes, I am being a bit subjective, but I think the overall quality as far as critical acclaim of HD-DVD movies is without doubt superior (for now).
blah. the academy can go to hell for not giving Psycho or Anthony Perkins the nod in 1960.

The Thing is on HD-DVD. that's one film i will ALWAYS buy again whenever it comes on a better format, without any hesitation. it's the main thing that's got me tempted buy HD-DVD.

yes. i'd spend over $200 to get a better version of The Thing. you have to remember that i'm as much horror fan as i am a gamer. other films will follow. The Thing got me to buy a DVD player. it'll probably get me to buy an HD-DVD player too.

I TOTALLY ****ING FORGOT THE THING IS GOING HD-DVD.......glad I waited on the purchase

....one of my all time favorite horror movies. This and Army of Darkness pushed me over the edge :)

You forgot the psu.

I'm fairly sure that the USB cable between the HD-DVD and the 360 can be more than 4 inches (as is the power cable to the brick from the 360). I think it just may be possible to not having to stack all of them together all the time.

Just a guess though.

Hah. I really wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being the case for a lot of 360 owners (as I'm thinking the same thing). While it ends up costing the same as a premium 360, the fact that 360 owners are not in fact dropping all that money at once makes it a much more appealing prospect. After all, $200 is the sweet spot for a nice little holiday gift for yourself. Who knows if it can play the Installment Base tango with the PS3 in the Format Wars, but I wouldn't be surprised if sales of this peripheral are looked at very closely by every analyst, game journo, and whoever for quite some time.

its most likely smaller than the AD1.

im wondering about how it will connect, I know usb but can I use a USB hub? I really don't like a wire coming out of the front of my 360. (im only asking this cause the camera doesn't support the use of a hub, it says it must be directly connected to the system.)

The Thing is out next month, so it'll be on shelves when the 360 drive releases... as will Slither, which if you missed it sounds like it'll be right up your alley.

I LOVE THE THING! When they are testing blood, I still crap my pants when the one test turns positive. The Thing, The Shining, Alien 1 and 2. All must-haves for the high-def era for me.

My thing is that I have an older HDTV set that only has component connections to begin with. So if I can get a player that plays HD-DVD through component for a few years until I'm ready (and have the wife's consent) to get a new HDTV set with HDMI, then I'm happy with that.

AD1? If you are talking about Toshiba's HD-A1 the 360 addon is wayy smaller as its just a drive + some local storage for bookmarks.

I dont know if you can use a Hub, but the drive has 2 USB ports on the back of it to make up for the port it takes up on the 360

Just use the USB port on the back of the unit. And the add on has hub built in and an extra USB port as well, so you can move whatever USB device you plugged in the back of the 360 to the add on.

I know about the two USB ports on the back of the HD drive but then that brings up the question do those count as (directly connect to the system) USB ports?

Bud said:
The player is pretty huge man. If you combine the 360, power supply ad the hddvd player you've got yourself a HUGE BITCH!
You think that bitch is huge, put the 360 on top of a HD-A1, and you'd need to fork lift that sh*t into your entertainment center (no fault of the 360).

Good news about the startup time. I wonder if disk load times will show a big improvement too.

No, it's surprisingly small, but thick. In real terms, it will likely be your smallest AV component by far. The PSU is tiny too - Laptop PSU sized. I mean you still have a huge bitch 360 somewhere, but the USB cable is long enough to let you keep the two pretty far apart.

The HD-dvd addon is so much of an afterthought that I'm surprised some of you are expressing interest. Plus the pricepoint is pretty bad. Its almost like Wii... $50 too much.

in the event:
dead x360 = no hd-dvd playback for you
or when hd-dvd player dies, no hd-dvd playback for you.

Peripherals that link to a system - not even a pc here.. is a bad idea. Plus what's the deal with 1080/hdmi?

The pricepoint is perfect for anyone looking to buy a hd-dvd player. $400 for a standalone or half the price for this. In the UK, taht differential becomes even greater. This is a great way to get into hidef movies at a price that won`t have me kicking myself in the balls if HD-DVD eventually dies out.

Would I like it to be cheaper? Sure, but given the price is already subsidised I may as well wish for the moon.

And 1080P works fine over VGA, not that it is really required for movies. 1080i is fine for people with decent TVs with a good deinterlacer.

Why are you surprised? My entire collection of 360 games cost more and is equally as worthless if the 360 dies. Not going to stop me from buying games. My CRT doesn't accept 1080p anyway. $200 flat this holiday is a very appealing gateway price to HD land this holiday.

....an decent upconverting player from Bestbuy will set you back $100+

....$100 more for a full on HD-DVD player is a pretty good deal

It's a no brainer for X360 owners that are interested in buying HD movies.

see. i don't get this. AT ALL. i want hd-movies. i have a 360. the hd-dvd add-on is by far the cheapest solution. it's not an afterthought at all. it's not even up to discussion. if you want to watch hd-dvd movies and you have a 360 - this is the way to go. why should we NOT be interested?

I'd like the drive but since I don't collect movies I know it'd just end up to be one of those many toys I have that I don't use. Some of my nutjob co-workers are very interested though.. you know, the people that spend $7000 on a projector, $3000 on theatre couches, paint their basement black and have over 500 DVD movies in their collection.

I don't think I can resist a cheap HDDVD player

Just don't like the uncertainity in the format wars - but even if HD-DVD loses its not as if the movies already bought will just stop playing - and Blu ray will probably be cheap by then(or I'll have a PS3)

If you are in the US, I think it's worth mentioning that Netflix offers both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. You don't have to be a "nutjob" to start transitioning to these high capacity formats.

that list is outdated, some additions:

11/28/2006
Superman (Warner)
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (Warner)

PLUS, all the BCI titles have been delayed

I don't live in the USA but there are online rental places in my country. I just don't have time or the money to start collecting DVDs what with my serious video game addiction problems. I have a hard enough time to sneak a new game every month past my wife let alone 2-3 movies as well.

For people who are into the home theatre collection and have or are thinking of getting a 360 the HD-DVD drive is a no-brainer.

360 PSU, HD-DVD PSU (which is probably a silent AC/DC brick), 360 fans and the HD-DVD drive (which by the sounds of things is relatively quiet)

Xbox.com is reporting November 7th for Europe it seems...

To conclude this exhilarating roundup of the X06 bombshells we can confirm that the hugely anticipated HD DVD player will launch on November 7 – just a few short weeks away. The player will come bundled with a Universal Media Remote and, for a limited time only, a copy of Peter Jackson’s amazing King Kong, also in HD DVD format. All for just €199.99, or a mere £129.99 in the UK.
