360 version of Unreal Tournament may have fewer maps

Well if Epic is gimping the 360 version of UT3 with less maps, then I won't be buying UT3 at all this year since I don't have a tricked out PC rig or a PS3. I guess I will have to wait next year when I get a new PC rig that plays StarCraft 2 at max settings in order to get my complete UT3 fix :O

I don't get it, isn't the PS3 version coming out well before the 360 version? Sounds like Rein is just trying to frontload a defense against any VF5 type fence sitting by making sure that the people with first access to it buy the shit out of it. Not an altogether bad move considering the PS3 userbase's anemic relationship with third party software. Turn it into an avatar for the System Warz and you get the PS3 Userbase 4 Lyfe. No need to worry about offending the 360 Userbase, as they buy anything and everything. And are a loving and forgiving sort.

If you like getting fucked over but personally I don't. So we'll see how MS treats UT cause with Midway publishing they can't hold back that free content like they could with Gears. Maybe they'll just hold it up with testing and certifications or justify costs by associating the maps with just testing who knows. Anyways I'll predict now that Epic will have a hard time releasing a wealth of content for free.

since we already have dual layer blu-ray - at 2 blu-ray discs, that's already 50+ GB... so at a minimum, like 6 disc swaps for DVD ;)

and if they fill both blu-ray discs, that's like 13 disc swaps - wouldn't be too far off from that mgs4 360 chop :lol

also, triple layer blu-ray discs are a possibility.

A lot of people (myself included) said similar when comparing DC disk size to PS2 disk size at the start of last gen.

Turned out to not be true. Devs CAN optimise for smaller file sizes, turns out they mostly can't be bothered to do things like procedural textures when they can just use high res uncompressed images instead.
and DC proved this point when? PS2 games got larger in size as time went on didn't they? I've seen lots of slides on procedural textures and krieger, i've never seen a full sized big budget game even attempt to use them fully.

Oh, I love it. I thought everyone did.

My favorite kind of reply. "Well, you know, if you like eating doodie, which I'm assuming you do as that's the only explanation for your statement."

Since one can only speculate on the handling of this content, MS' approach with Gears is just as valid as Ubisoft caving to MS' mandate and offering Rainbow Six maps for free. So that's two sources of precedent that point to there being no problem, in opposition to your prognostications implying conspiratorial stretches of extended testing and certification.

6 hours? If you skip the cutscenes maybe, but you'll have to listen to 6 hours of crappy dialogue at least. I'd say 10 minimum now that he can break the 25 GB barrier! Kojima hasn't delivered much on entertainment compared to space used on disc and this will be the most bloated MGS yet. No boss can ever top the bee boss from MGS3 and his tommy gun move but maybe MGS4 won't suck.

so your saying that the ps3 version isn't getting downloadable content for pay...:lol

Not if Epic sticks to their free content policies, not to mention the mods will be free for sure, so yeah.

In the DVD-9/Blu-Ray argument? You're thinking of Bioshock threads.

Seriously, there will NEVER be anger and bitter tears over this. As I've said a zillion times, 360 users have come to accept that DVD-9 is the reality for their console. It's never stopped an actual game from actually ever coming onto the platform. Exclusives on the other hand, mean you will never be able to play a game on a certain console. I can see someone getting angry or bitter over that, but seriously, you are hanging way too large and auspicious a hat on this issue.

...of course i don't expect a multiple blu-ray disc game. he presented the idea of swapping blu-ray discs and i simply expanded on what that would actually mean if done on DVD.

Am I the only one who thinks Mark Rein is full of

it? I remember to the days leading to the GearsOW release he trolled the PS3 with fury. And now with a PS3 game in the works, the position has been switched.

ok i give you the epic free content.....

but, since when was mgs ever over the 6 hour mark....granted that 4 have a chance, but come on. he's clearly over exaggerating the space he needs.... if he really wanted to take advantage of the disc, why didn't he just put mgs online on the disc... i think he's doing what i think he's doing and just talking out of his ass.

your error lies with assuming game length is directly proportional to size on disc.

Then why isn't Knight of the Nine free? There was a thread a while back about some free Worms content not being released. I just don't have a lot of faith in MS or the Live platform in this regards. I mean the PS3 is getting the game first in some kind of exclusive deal and has the ability to run mods. That's obviously a lot of free content tied exclusively to the mods which will on be showing up on PS3 for now. Maps on the PS3 disc aside cause those probably will be offered for free, but what about the wealth of content already released by that point? Obviously it'll be more than enough to fill a DVD but how long will it take for the 360 version to catch up if ever? Not to mention all the other headaches associated for MS, like I said, clusterfuck!

i'm not even saying that, i'm saying that the game will not be long...to me, it might be atleast 12 hours... i said 6 hours because thats how long it took me to finish the other mgs games... but the scope of this game will surely surpass them. I'm just saying that, what makes this game different from other games like killzone 2 and resistence that make it needs 2 or a full disc of a bluray?

Amount of dialogue at uncompressed 7.1 sound. Compress that and drop the quality and there goes half the space needed.

Nobody does dialogue using 7.1. I assume you just mean sound.

MGS games are usually filled to the rim with easter eggs. MGS3 (normal not the re release) has far more unlockables, and secrets than I could finish myself. MGS is designed for replay if the person like that kind of gameplay. Most unlockables require you to play certain ways forcing you to be more careful (MGS2 introduced tranq gun allowing you to beat the whole game without killing). About the bosses, they've always been over the top with fictional powers. MGS has humor, and trys to be serious at times. All CS is with 0s and 1s minus the live action fotage at times. The sound system of MGS4 is supposed to be a big deal. Things making sounds depending on the situation. Glass falling on carpet, wood, sand, etc. Out of

Dialogue is sound isn't it? Yes, I do mean sound. I was just saying there is a lot of unique dialogue in MGS, and uncompressed it will take up a lot of space.

Edit: By the way I'm just answering a question, not pointing out ways MGS4 will be ported to the 360.

Because MS have no say over whether any premium content for Oblivion is free or not, that decision is left to Bethesda.

Some of you will remember that they released the Mehrune's Razor content free over Christmas, and let's not forget that the game of the year edition of Oblivion is just round the corner & that will have both Knights of the Nine & Shivering Isles on the disc.

Anyway, I'll be interested to see how well UT3 sells after his comments.

Depends on where you live.

I can see getting up & changing a disc every now & then would be pretty stressful for the average American, whereas those who live in say Europe wouldn't find it as stressful.

It's based on how you play, if you're running and gunning + know what to do you can take it to single digit hours. When I attempted to unlock stealth camo in which I had to play perfect and not get any red alerts (causing me to save frequently and reload from save if I screwed anything up). I beat that in 9 hours but my screw ups weren't counted, and I already knew exactly what to do from a previous stealth run where I thought I could take death pill to start over instead (20hr finish, all time was saved from death pill + figuring out paths and such).

People play MGS the way they want to, the weapons/tools are open to them.

does oblivion on 360 include all the added ps3 stuff for free now?

By all I take it you mean the Knights of the Nine premium content.

As I said earlier, the game of the year edition will have both Knights of the Nine & Shivering Isles on the disc & that's coming to both consoles as well as PC.

yeah, isnt there a deal that states anything avable in box or for free on another platform must be the same for 360.

oh well as much as Im loving epics 360 pounding on UE3 there is still a long wait.

Tip-to-toe, Microsoft's storage strategy may look very short sighted going forward, at least technologically speaking. It's bought them advantages in other respects (e.g. cost, time-to-market), but from a technical and game quality POV it may start to hurt. Cut-down versions of high profile multiplatform games is probably the worst possible scenario.

Compensatory DLC is all well and good, but the credibility of multi-gigabyte downloads and HDD installs will only stretch so far when the vast majority of your userbase is dealing with 20GB, and their only upgrade paths are proprietary and pricey. Multi-disc solutions are an OK tradeoff with certain games, but they wouldn't really fly with something like UT, where you could be switching maps (and thus discs) frequently in online multiplayer.

Who the fuck cares about the differences between console versions, Jesus people, 6 pages of knife fight, holy shit.

No sane gamer will play UT3 on anything that isn't called a PC.

Wouldn't work, both use the same assets. The only difference would be some voice acting, movies and maybe some music.

The big deal with UTIII on the PS3 is that it is so close to the PC version feature for feature.

That is exactly how it will work. How do you think games like Blue Dragon was done and others will be accomplished?

Uncompressed, Blue Dragon is over 30GB and it fits on 3 DVDs and that is with a ton of FMV and sharing assets. It can be done.

With all this bad news for the 360 version - no mods, no KB+mouse support and less maps, I doubt it will sell particularly well.

I doubt it's gonna sell well due to the competition on the platform as well.

This Fall, UT3 should do quite well on the PS3. If UT3 hit the 360 this Fall, it would get slaughtered.

BTW, I wouldn't count out MODs just yet.

I'm getting the PS3 version due to KB and M support, anyways. I'm sure these levels could be downloaded from Marketplace...so the only issue is whether or not you have an HDD.
