3D Platformers for PS1?

I feel like I never really hear about 3D platformers when people talk about the PS1. I'm talking stuff like Mario 64, Conker, Banjo-Kazooie but for the PS1. I guess the Tomb Raider games could count? I played the first 3 with my siblings when I was a child so the nostalgia glasses for the first three Tomb Raider games are strong but I think they were genuinely good games.

Anyway, I ask the gaming experts here at NeoGAF, what are some (good) 3D Platformers for PS1 that you know about?

Crash and Spyro obviously.

Well, the obvious answers are the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon games. Crash Bandicoot 2 is my favourite game of all time.

Off the top of my head there was Croc, though I never played it nor do I know if it was supposed to be any good. There's a game called 40 Winks which has 'Better than Mario 64" written on the box art but that is not at all accurate.

I was a fan of the 3D Frogger game called Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge. I also remember enjoying Pac-Man World when I played it, but that was a long time ago.

Crash Bandicoot series, Spyro series, Ape Escape, Jersey Devil, Rosco Mcqueen, Blasto, Rascal, MediEvil, Gex: Enter the Gecko, Toy Story, Rugrats, Croc 1 & 2, Pandemonium, (sort of) Jumping Flash!, Klonoa, (maybe) Glover.

Ape Escape for the PS1 is my all time favorite 3D platformer.

I think Ape Escape is one of the better suggestions for the type of game OP is looking for. That and Spyro. I would recommend Crash 1-3 like others in this thread because I love Crash but it sounds like OP is asking for games with a more open structure to each stage.

I can't believe I forgot Crash Bandicoot and Spyro... I even have Crash Bandicoot 2 somewhere around my house lol.

The Ape Escape games are not on PS Classics.. wtf Sony :(

I would absolutely recommend popping Crash 2 in. It's a personal favorite of mine and I come back to it every now and then. Still holds up nicely.

Does Jumping Flash really actually hold up today though? I know the Crash trilogy does, and Ape Escape DEFINTELY does on all ends (music, graphics, gameplay).

Tomba 1&2!

Though the first game was more 2d with funky depth. Not sure if they're on the NA psn, but they sure are on EU!

*Edit*

Oh right, 3D platformers, I thought we're talking about 2D platformers that were in 3d xD

I love Croc to bit, but I find it hard to recommend. It's a platformer with 'tank controls' in an era where Mario 64 existed.

That said, i feel like the levels are designed well enough around the controls that it's not as big a deal as some might expect. I ended up 100%ing it as a kid, and I've gone back to it recently and still really enjoyed it.

The music was 100% bangin'.

After mainly playing NES all the way until I got a PS1 with Croc for a Christmas present, it was a goddamn revelation.

Ape Escape was amazing.

Got a soft spot for the original Spyro because it was one of the first games I bought with my first paycheck ever, along with Heart of Darkness and Parasite Eve all on the same day. Classics.

Do games that were on both the N64 and PS1 count? If so, then I'm going to say Toy Story 2. I own this game on my N64, and it's a surprisingly decent platformer for a licensed game. I also have a lot of nostalgia for it since I used to play it all the time as a kid.

I've heard it's better on the PS1 in some ways (the soundtrack is more high quality and is orchestrated, it has actual clips from the movie, etc.), but I've never played it on PS1. I've only seen gameplay of the PS1 version on Youtube.

I think I have around 160 games for my PS1, but its already been mentioned, but I love Crash, Spyro, And Klonoa, and Jumping flash (only played JF1)

But I've never played Ape Escape except for a demo from some PSN magazine :)
think I have to try to buy it.

Well if you wanted 3D platformers no one in there right mind got a PS1.

Gex: Enter the Gecko was the best of the PS1 platformers. Tomb Raider was a neat game overall but the platforming part wasn't exactly amazing. Crash was sort of a solid B tier game, it was more of a 2.5D game so it holds up a bit better today because of that more simplistic approach. Ape Escape was crap.

Haha, I remember all the previews of 40 Winks implying it was going to be the most amazing thing ever, then it came out and was not.

Jersey devil was a favorite of mine

Mine too. Tried to play it on PS3 recently and it doesn't run so good, weird static and stuff in the skyboxes. It was disappointing, I might try again anyway because I do remember it being good. I like that it came with a little guide-book as well for the start of the game. And the awesome/terrible opening cartoon.

I also liked Gex. I'm not sure if it was any good looking back but it really gelled with my sense of humour at the time so I had a lot of fun with it.

Props to the guy who mentioned Toy Story 2. A remarkably competent game considering it's licensed, much like Toy Story 3 was as well I guess!

Wasn't Croc originally a prototype for a 3D Yoshi game ? I think i head about that not too long ago. I really need to play this one.

Loved Bugs bunny: lost in time on my ps1 but I was pretty young so its hard to judge if it really was that good.

Not exactly 3D but for my money the absolute best platformer on the PS1 is Klonoa Door to Phantomile. It's more of a 2.5D one but deserves all the love it can get. Such an overlooked gem.

The good news is that the game's available on PSN to play on your Vita, PSP or PS3.

Jumping Flash! 1/2, Spyro the Dragon, Ape Escape and Crash Bandicoot 2 are all exemplary platformers, not just on the PS1 but any system.

Don't play Croc though. Croc is shit.
