3D Platformers for PS1?

Hugo is really average but I had fun with it back in the days. Only play this if you really want to play lots of PSX playformers.
I think the rest of the replies itt got you covered, Crash and Spyro are obviously the best ones from around that time.

No it's quite challenging. "3D platforming for babies" is a pretty good description of Mario 64, though.

I wonder what I'm thinking of then. I'm sure there was a game marketed as being "for a younger audience" or something like that because it was simpler to play.

Although it was released earlier?

Argonaut had a relationship with Nintendo, making the SNES FX chip, working on starfox, and later pitching a 3d yoshi N64 game idea that eventually became mario 64.

"The end came when we pitched to do a 3D platform game, the likes of which had never been done before. We mocked up a prototype using Yoshi. It was essentially the world's first 3D platform game and was obviously a big risk - Nintendo had never let an outside company use their characters before, and weren't about to, either. This is the moment the deal fell apart. We later made that game into Croc: Legend of the Gobbos for the PlayStation, Saturn and PC, which became our biggest ever game in terms of sales and also in royalties, since we owned the IP."

The similarity between Croc and Super Mario 64 isn't lost on San, who feels that the early prototype had some influence on the seminal N64 title. "Miyamoto-san went on to make Mario 64, which had the look and feel of our Yoshi game - but with the Mario character, of course - and beat Croc to market by around a year," San says. "Miyamoto-san came up to me at a show afterwards and apologised for not doing the Yoshi game with us and thanked us for the idea to do a 3D platform game. He also said that we would make enough royalties from our existing deal to make up for it. That felt hollow to me, as I'm of the opinion that Nintendo ended our agreement without fully realising it. They canned Star Fox 2 even though it was finished and used much of our code in Star Fox 64 without paying us a penny

Well the game's visuals and characters were clearly marketed at a younger audience, but the gameplay still had plenty of depth and challenging level design that could be appreciated by older players. (The difficulty is somewhat exacerbated by the shitty controls, though.)

3D Platformers are pretty much all I hear about from PS1. That, and FFVII.

Never forget.

The BEST N64-like 3D platformers on the PSX are:
  • Spyro the Dragon
  • Spyro 2 - Ripto's Rage
  • Spyro - Year of the Dragon
  • Ape Escape
  • Gex - Enter the Gecko
  • Gex 3 - Deep Cover Gecko
  • Jumping Flash

Spyro games are more open world 3D platform games similar to the N64 games you cited.
Crash games are more constrained in nature.

There are also smaller ones like Croc (but also less good).

EDIT:
Oh and yeah Ape Escape too.

EDIT2:
There is also the port of Rayman 2 for PS1 though be aware it is by far the worse version.

Mario 64 is a rip off of Croc
lol

In that article it's only written that Jeremy San (Argonaut Software founder) feels that the early prototype had some influence on the seminal N64 title [Mario 64].
Not that Mario 64 was a Croc rip off.

To note that whatever influence the pitch could have had on Mario 64 development had yet to be proven.

Ape Escape is phenomenal and holds up. Having to chase monkeys creates platforming situations on the fly which is pretty unique in the genre. Their AI is actually well varied too and many will not just run on the ground but traverse the environment.

It's s pretty big game too. Time trials are also completely worth playing.

I enjoyed Ape Escape more than Mario 64.

I don't know how well Spyro and Crash hold up by today's standards. But yeah, they're good. But Ape Escape is the king of the PSX.

List of essential PSX 3D platform games:
Crash Bandicoot 1/2/3 (mostly almost 2.5d, actually, no exploration involved)
Spyro The Dragon 1/2/3
Gex: Enter the Gecko and its sequel
Ape Escape
Croc (just the first one)

Muppet Monster Adventure was pretty good.
Just trying to mention a good one I hadn't seen mentioned.

It's structured similarly to the ps1 Spyro games

Problem is: it is a very mediocre game. I reviewed back at that time and was not impressed at all. Low-second tier platform game. :)

Kingsley's Adventure by Psygnosis

Kudos for citing it. Yet, not a platform game. More of an action-adventue, a-la Zelda. Nice game.

Crash Bandicoot series, Spyro series, Ape Escape, Jersey Devil, Rosco Mcqueen, Blasto, Rascal, MediEvil, Gex: Enter the Gecko, Toy Story, Rugrats, Croc 1 & 2, Pandemonium, (sort of) Jumping Flash!, Klonoa, (maybe) Glover.

Pandemonium has 3D graphics but 2D gameplay.

Klonoa and Tomba2 are great platformers but they aren't full 3D platformers.

True. The tech behind it was pretty good. If they weren't licensing the Spyro engine then they got pretty close.

Yeah, Ghost in the Shell is another often overlooked action adventure game.

The Bugs Bunny games weren't actually too terrible. Considering people on here have suggested Croc 2, I can't be stretching too far.

Besides the obvious answers OT, you should try some licensed Disney games

Goin' Quackers, Tarzan and Atlantis are some really fun games that nobody remembers
