Exactly. It's just that their logic often flies in the face of convention—but that doesn't make it any less logical.

Horribly stretched, like GB games on the GBA.

Depends. The GBC/GB games would have looked far better on the GBA if they were stretched vertically, as well as horizontally - but due to hardware restrictions, it wasn't possible.

EDIT, @ Bizzyb: I think you are underestimating how much they want to kill the DS. Yes, they make money from it, but they have a far greater opportunity of making money with the 3DS - given the potential for 3rd party involvement on a level the DS never saw - and they won't want anything (even their own system) to hold the system's adoption up.

It'll be $199.

The minute they announce the release date for the 3DS, informed consumers will halt their potential purchase of the DSi in favor of the 3DS. Reason being the 3DS can play all the DS games they want and the new better 3D games/movie, all for what, $70 more, at most?

Nintendo doesn't "want" to kill DS sales but it will happen regardless once 3DS is unveiled. It's in Nintendo's best interest to release 3DS soon after it's announcement to help with the damage control of the major decrease in DSi sales that will surely follow. The price cuts only serve to soften this blow.

I'm not suggesting that they're going to kill DS sales months in advance of the 3DS's release, but they are most certainly going to start a decrease in the DS's prices in order to clear inventory and make the 3DS's price, upon its release, appear overwhelmingly reasonable.

And yes, honestly, I think they do want to kill the DS's sales upon the 3DS's release. Are you serious? If they want major 3rd party support for this machine, which they are poised to get, then hell yes, they want the DS to die.

True but I doubt they will have a problem with that. They will sell out of every 3DS they produce until this time next year (and perhaps beyond) so I don't think adoption rate will be an issue. By summer next year DS will most likely have been phased out and developer support will depend entirely on the quality of their games, as it usually has been.

edit: they are already starting to "clear inventory" with this just announced price drop. I'm sure this is just the first of many to come.

I wonder what DS games will look like and if there's a zoom-to-fullscreen option.

I assume there will be black sidebars.

DEMOS DON'T COST 50 BUCKS

yea, but a pack-in gives them a reason to up the price. unless they put something in like Wii Sports (Pilot Wings 3D?). they could add stuff like 3DSware points or movie trailers on top of that.

We wouldn't really know.

fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you

Ok then, I'll rephrase it.
Has Nintendo ever included a demo with a system, as well as a stand alone system that costs less?

Hm... I don't think so. I don't really think anyone has.

$199 stand-alone or $250 with demo

If 3DS games cost $50 then I'm going to be sitting this one out.

fucking hipster. trying to be different

I am with the hipster on that one :lol
$200-$229.99

plus with those price drops about to happen for dsi and dsi xl, it's a slight chance that the 3DS might make a Holiday launch B)

I hope games won't cost more then $40 :/ but since some nintendo DS games sell for $35 , seems like it will happen.

I still think it will be $219 with some sort of pack in. Considering the DS launched at like double what the GBA SP's price was at the time, I think a $50 gap from DSi XL to 3DS is perfectly reasonable.

only launch game certain as of now is ridge racer :lol they always come out with new systems

You know what? I would be totally up for a Ridge Racer at launch. The last one I palyed was on the PSP and this would probably be pretty fun in 3D.

There already was one announced so maybe I'll be lucky. :D

It doesnt look very good though. But there is a good chance it shapes up. Maybe they will add online /hopeful

shit, now I want a 3D Auto Modellesta :(

Damn, that is cheap.

I'm calling $250 or £200 MAX! (I know the exchange rates don't add up, but that's what I see)

Hopefully lower than that.

I'm calling 179.99 also.
There is no way they'd launch it at only $10 more than their priciest DSi model. $189 absolute minimum, $199 more likely (without a bundled game, anyway).

This week is the GameStop Manager conference. Think Nintendo would give them a general idea if the system is coming this yr or not?

I'm with the $199.99 crowd. Makes sense considering the price of the DS SKUs, and it doesn't cross the $200 "oh god this is too expensive for a handheld" mark...at least not visually. :)
