3DS HOMEBREW Discussion Thread [exploits/carts/applications/games]

So before I take the plunge on this, can I get a final confirmation?

If I update my firmware now on my old 3DS to the most recent version, then download the game, I can use the new Ninjhax?

Aren't updates like a separate app on the 3DS?, I assume if you don't need it you can just uninstall the update (just talking out of my ass here).

I've no idea, unfortunately, which is why I asked.

Too late now, anyway. I just now updated it to v1.1.

Edit: Hold on a sec - I'm assuming that the update is downloaded to the SD card, yeah? Well, can't you just remove the SD card, delete the updated app from the 3DS memory, and then download the base app from the eShop without updates?

I got the base version of the game.

I don't think the updated version would contain the same hole, so I wouldn't update. That's just my guess, anyway.

If the devs didn't know about the exploit before now (doubtful, because we didn't until just a few minutes ago), there's a good chance the updated version has the same hole.

Good to hear that you can delete patches, though. If true, then that's a relief in this case.

Same here. I have an OG 3DS XL on 9.0 and a copy of Cubic Ninja with the original Ninjhax exploit installed. I have no desire to run a Gateway card. Are there benefits to me jumping on this update or should I stay where I am now?

Just updated to 1.1 for my OG and n3DS. So glad I checked GAF tonight in the early hours of the morning, which I rarely do.

Here's to hoping that regionFour is possible through this too. Would be awesome if it was without the cart swap.

Currently, the latest version of the 3DS firmware will work with the Cubic Ninja exploit and regionfour. If your 3DS happens to be on 9.2 or lower, you can exploit in for free - however you can't go any higher than emunand (clone of your real 3DS NAND) 9.5, so no eShop and eventually new games won't work.

The Cubic Ninja exploit will certainly get patched in the next firmware update, so if you're willing to gamble on the possibility of their not being another method and therefore not playing games made before 2016 (a guess - could be earlier) then get one. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it and get a hackable old 3DS (which can be hacked and stay updated)
Aw crap I totally didn't see your reply until now (apparently I deleted this thread from my subscriptions), so sorry about that especially since you answered my question so fast.

Anyway thanks for the info! I'd like to use my New 3DS normally and keep updating it and being able to use the eShop and stuff so maybe I shouldn't buy Cubic Ninja then if it that exploit will be be patched soon.

Btw I take it that this new Ironfall exploit people are talking about is not yet confirmed to enable region free without needing Cubic Ninja?

Ironfall? I can't download it (the free app) due to not having an NNID linked (non negotiable here) but...I can buy a download code for the game:
http://www.game.co.uk/en/iron-fall-invasion-singleplayer-game-only-370753
So question for people. Does the game have an in-game option to enter download codes for its DLC (like SSB 3DS DLC is handled)? If it a download code for the eShop I am good but if it is for the in the game itself it is useless.

Edit: The game has a "Enter a promotional code" field. 99% sure the code goes there so so looks like this isn't for me.

Edit: In case people take this the wrong way, these kinds of games are good things to find exploits in due to their availability to the more typical 3DS user (rather than me who will not bend over and take shitty exchange rates up the ass and random bouts of ...this).

More than likely, it will allow the same amount of code execution Cubic Ninja does. I would assume it will allow region free. Problem is, game isn't out in Japan, so an N3DS from there is a no go if you want a free exploit :(

I have a 9.2 3DSXL. I have both Cubic Ninja en OoT on cartridges.
All I want is to permanently install that upcoming Homebrew Channel
Should I do anything (update? download that e-shop title?)

Installed the game on both my 3DS XL and New 3DS XL, I hope this helps me get both systems region freedom and emulators.
In an ideal world, it would let me transfer my digital games from one system to the other, but it's no big deal.

If I can run RegionFour, I'll take one for the team and buy DQVII. That way, a localization should be confirmed within a week.

Look into rxTools - it's a free solution that works on 9.2 or lower and allows you to run homebrew/pirated games/whatever while keeping a higher firmware.

Hmmm I do also have an European 3DS XL with Ironfall though (and also OoT on cartridge). So I guess now I have to decide between

- Modding my Japanese N3DS with video capture kit, and find Cubic Ninja somewhere and hope the region free exploit keeps working (and/or another free exploit is found in the future)

- Modding my European N3DS XL with video capture kit, and hope the Ironfall/OoT exploit will allow region free.

I'm going to the modder on the 10th so I have to decide soon >_<. Why does this have to be so difficult D:

What's the state of emulation on 3DS? I haven't really checked in since the original release of Ninjhax and wouldn't mind setting my 2DS up for some retrogaming. Have 3DNES OR BlargSnes improved any? Do we have any good GBA, MD or PCE emus yet? Any new word on Retroarch coming or not?

Downloaded Ironfall. So I'm seeing conflicting posts around the net about these exploits. Will Cubic Ninja be required? Or a flashcart? Or should we just wait for more info?

I would modify the European 3DS, personally. The Ironfall exploit will only require an SD card (implied) and will let you do everything the Cubic Ninja exploit does (they very likely have the same level of access for loading stuff)

Ironfall exploit, by the way it's being hyped up, will be standalone and not require another game or other hardware.

BlargSNES runs full speed for me with flawless sound on:

- Super Mario All Stars (including SMB3 now, used to be slow before)
- Tetris Attack
- Earthbound
- Tetris and Dr Mario
- Super Mario World
- Super Metroid (not hit any crashes yet, I'm at Brinstar red area)

GameYob has full speed on every single GB/GBC game I've tried along with SGB support and FCEUMM (NES) is basically flawlessly full speed now and looks fantastic:

Now, here are the only issues that are present:

- Sound is choppy on Gameyob and FCEUMM due to it using the hacky csound driver (or so I understand), but I think the dev working on them is going to work around it. Everything else about them is great though

- emulators are now being developed to take advantage of the extra processing power of the N3DS, such as the NES emulator. Good for people like me with a N3DS - not so good for people like you with a 2DS.

So im on FW 9.2 on my N3DS and using Gateway card, obviously at the moment i cant access the eShop as my FW is out of date to get IronFall, but what about it i got the cia file for Ironfall from somewhere, would this up coming exploit work in this situation?

and what actually does IronFall allow....for me to still have all my cart games installed on my SD card on the N3DS?

Curious what my options are for my "New" 3DS I purchased. Believe I'm on 9.5 I have several games I use for different purposes. Xenoblade for my train ride, Phoenix Wright for lunch breaks, etc. Same way I dumped my psp games I'd like to do that here without having to carry them all. The less clutter the better for me.

Can .gba files be run natively (or by an emulator) with any current exploit?

citragb is an emulator, port of gpsp. Not great compatibility yet and no scaling, but minish cap does run full speed.

otherwise, you can use pasta cfw to rom inject GBA VC games:

SfdYfgU.jpg

and that has superb compatibility from what I can tell, running natively through interpretation

I love how the GBA example you gave, Rich, is exactly the game I have in mind when wondering if I'll ever get GBA games to run on my 3DS. Well, that, the Metroids and Astro Boy.

I hope this new exploit allows for that kind of CFW.

Welp

Time to install some pasta

Sooooo... can one use Ninjhax 2.0 on my latest firmware 3DS XL to install CFW to inject some GBA roms? Cause I got lots of GBA games that would love to replay on my XL.

How does that work? Is it like what some did with the GBC/GB games a while back ('injecting' them into the SD card and then opening them using an existing VC game) or something different.

Regardless, that is really cool and a sign that GBA games can run on 3DS quite well :).

can't wait to see what comes out of this ironfall thing. i don't wanna buy an overpriced copy of cubic ninja but i sure as hell will take any free exploit that lets me play an import copy of rhythm tengoku the best

I hope this opens the doors to emulators, as I would love to play through the Sonic Advance games on my 2DS :).

So if I wanted to run emulators on my 3DS (GBA,NES,GB), I don't need a flash cart and possibly with this Ironfall exploit, Cubic Ninja for that matter?

Being able to tote my GBA collection on my 3DS would be amazing. Right now I use the PSP and the graphics options kind of bug me...

Is the "Play Coin Setter (Ninjhax/3DSx edition)" still working on the current firmware of 3DS with any carts? I mostly just want a cart to be able to hax some coins for the minigames.

MMM... trying to install Ninjhax 2.0 on my apparently supported 9.9.0.26 U unit, but when the exploit loads after hitting SCAN QR code it takes me to the web browser. any idea what might be wrong?

So I installed Pasta CFW and everything went smoothly, but I'm annoyed that you basically had to delete all of your eShop content before proceeding. I backed it up on my PC first and I'm currently in the process of moving it back, but I'm not sure if I need to restore my import.db and title.db files from my old dbs folder (which I also backed up), or if I need to keep the new ones that I downloaded as part of the pasta installation process. I should be able to play my games again without re-downloading everything from the eShop, right?

EDIT: Finished moving the titles folder back but my eshop games still aren't appearing, will they appear if I restore the old dbs folder? Will this break anything with Pasta CFW?

Also do I have to install my GBA CIA file to nand, or will installing it to the SD card work? (Scratch that, apps get installed to SD, duh) Can't wait to play some Zero Mission on my 3DS!

EDIT: Oh yeah!

It takes the GBA VC games and just replaces the ROM (and banner if you want) with another game. It only works if you have CFW as you need to install them as separate home menu apps.

The homebrew GBA emulator isn't much (or even?) better than what you would get on a PSP. For the native GBA compatibility, you need CFW - which at this time, isn't possible unless you have a 9.2 console - but a kernel exploit is always possible so if you're patient - might get lucky.

Can you (or anyone else) explain how to access my eShop games after installing Pasta CFW? During the install process you had to replace the dbs folder with a new one containing hacked .db files, and then had to format the portion of your memory card which contained all of your eshop titles. After installing Pasta CFW I moved the "titles" folder (which contains all of my eshop games) that I had backed up back to its original location on the SD card but my games still don't show up. I'm guessing the title.db file from the dbs folder basically dictates which games on your SD card you can access? Meaning I would have to restore the original dbs folder to my SD card to play my old games if I don't want to re-download everything? But if I did that I would lose access to the GBA games I've installed on Pasta CFW. Do I have this correct?

Okay - the .db files seem really tricky at first, but it's rather simple to fix. Basically, assuming you're using rxTools (with Pasta) - restore your original db files. At this point, any GBA games you installed won't appear anymore but your eShop stuff will be back. From here, just keep your original .db files install any hacked/backup games from there. You'll then have both working. Additionally, make periodic backups of your db files in case something goes wrong.
