3DS Photography Thread

Taking 3D pictures is one of my new favorite hobbies. The launch of 3DS has put 3D photography at the fingertips of millions of people. NeoGAF has some very talented artists and photographers. This thread is meant to be a product of that potential.

I decided to open this up to all 3D photography, regardless of whether the picture is taken by a 3DS or not, but I'd like to stick to the MPO format so that a 3DS can view the pictures.

This thread is a little ahead of the curve, as the 3DS browser comes in May, and it may not support MPO images in-browser. Right now, let's go with 3DPorch.

Do not hotlink the wiggle image. I want to be able to view the thread without getting sick.

How do I take basic 3D pictures with 3DS?

1. Have an SD card in the slot on the left side of the system (comes pre-installed)
2. Tap L or R (shoulder buttons) at any time in any of the menus or pre-installed software
3. Point and Shoot

What other software on 3DS allows you to save 3D photographs?

AR Games
Face Raiders
Nintendogs+Cats
Pilotwings Resort

How do I transfer photos from 3DS for this thread?

1. Turn off the 3DS (as per Nintendo's recommendation)
2. Remove the SD card from the 3DS
3. a.) if your computer has an SD slot, insert the SD card there
....b.) if your camera has an SD slot, insert it and connect the camera to your computer
....c.) if you have an SD card reader connected to your computer, use that
4. Look for the DCIM/100NIN03 directory on the SD card
5. Upload MPO to 3DPorch
6. Reload the page after 10 seconds
7. Choose the left eye or right eye image
8. Right click on the image->Copy Image URL
9. Add the image to your post
10. Provide link to the image's page on 3Dporch as a caption so people can see the wiggle version and download the MPO and JPG

How do I view the MPO files on my 3DS?

1. Save the MPO file to the SD card
2. Rename it "HNI_0###.MPO", where each "#" is a digit (0-9) and the number is unique.
3. Save either the left or right JPG to the SD card
4. Rename it "HNI_0###.JPG", using the same number as above
5. Transfer the SD card to the 3DS SD slot (machine should be off)
6. Run the camera software to view your images

Only saving the MPO file works most of the time, but some of the better pictures in the thread require the MPO/JPG pair.

It does kind of look like the 2 cameras have a minor color difference. Unless it's just the lighting?

Move them to DCIM/100NINXX where XX is a random number different from the one you're already using for your own pictures.
Actually I think you can use any naming scheme you want, but I haven't tried.

Also, the .jpg file is only needed to see the picture in 2D (no idea what happens if you turn 3D off and the .jpg is missing).

I do, but i'll have to edit my post later. My PC at work dont have a SD slot. But yeah, the 3D effect is good on them, pretty much why i took them on these angles.
 
I was actually interested in this mainly due to the 3D photography but man, the IQ and resolution are hilari-bad. Yikes. Guess it gets the job done... sorta.

Unfortunately, yeah :/
Even worse than the low resolution, if the framed area is not lit perfectly the pics get filled with ugly artifacts.
 
Wahey! Good OP, can't wait to see what people come up with.

Is AR Games what you're using to get Miis everywhere? I've seen pictures with a whole bunch of Miis running around the place...

Well, considering that higher-quality lenses and hardware to go along with it may have made the 3DS thicker and add about $100 to the price I'm satisfied with what it is--a neat toy you fiddle with every now and then.

This thing was obviously never meant to be a real camera.
 
I have trouble getting joy out of the 3d pictures due to being accustomed to the quality of digital cameras. Only taken a few pics so far.

Nevertheless I am happy for the creation of this thread, and might share some of mine in the future. Not bought yet on 3d pictures/film personally, but will be fun to experiment more with. I like those AR card photos with characters.
 
I have the fuji w3 camera, it is very easy to view the mpo files on 3ds, you just take the sd card from the fuji camera and put it in the 3ds. The only problem is it takes a few seconds to load each picture.

I'll upload some pics (fuji and 3ds) later when I get home.
 
Right, so I thought I'd try something a little different. I've created some 3D photos of Halo Reach using the Theater mode just to test if I could get the process working and I think I did! Check out all the 3D photos here:

This is true and I won't argue my issue beyond this post (don't want to muck up the thread) but just for comparison here's a 3D Photo I just created with my oldish Canon Rebel XT (which is a bit unfair since it contains a larger image sensor and better lens)...

The weird thing is that the 3DS seems incapable of shooting a sharp image even in great light. Inside in bad lighting is understandable but I would have though the IQ would be better in decent outdoor light. The feeling of 3D is heightened when things are actually in focus and sharp, with the 3DS you get a general feeling of depth but a lot of it is lost on the IQ.
 
As long as you post a link to the MPO file so people can view the photos on a 3DS, I'm fine with people posting 3D images from any source (that is, unless that angers the mods).
 
Ok. I just tried to put a .jps that I took on my PC at 1680x1050, renamed to .mpo with the right file name and it didn't work. The preview did look sort of right though, just the 2 images side by side. I'm going to see if I take a .jps of the 3DSs res and rename it.mpo if it works.

EDIT: Nope, just tried with a smaller res .jps. Same thing. Preview pic looked ok but the 3DS won't show it :(

The left and right images would need to be swapped to view them in crosseye.

Schillr has an addon that allows you to right click a side by side JPG or JPS and flip it. Or you can copy and paste the image into StereoPhoto Maker and press X.

Simply renaming won't do the trick. It has to be a properly formatted MPO file.
 
StereoPhoto Maker is the quintessential free 3D photo app. I'm going to make some 3D screenshots of Uncharted 2 specifically for the 3DS.
 
Just tried uploading a .jps and 3Dporch tells me I can only upload .jps and .mpo files. Is there a resolution or filesize limit?
 
I'm on a semi vaccation this week in the mountains, (gonna have a wisdom tooth pulled yikes) so I'm going to take some well lit outdoor shots. Hopefully I'll find some green spots as winter still hasn't left really and all you see are brown patches of grass.

Will try to get some river shots and panoramic views.

They're side by side, but the wrong way around.
 
Tried taking a photo of a 3ds with a 3ds. I Didn't have much luck with Pilotwings probably due to the fast motion and low light, but I think this one looks ok.

I've done it! :D
Seeing as 3Dporch wouldn't let me upload my .jps files for some reason I found a converter that converts 3D image files to a variety of things including .mpo.
My AC:B shots would look amazing except I think it's too low a res (I set the game to the lowest res because I thought that'd help the 3DS) and I think it's got the left/right image on the wrong side.

Program is StereoPhoto Maker from here http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/index.html if anyone wants it. Gonna get some AC:B shots at a higher res (perhaps without a big black border). What's the 3DSs native res?

Nice work :D.

The native resolution is 400 x 240 I believe.
