3DS Photography Thread

Wow, that actually works?

Yeah I think so, the 3ds I took the photo with was having trouble trying to focus, I could see the 2 images sliding left and right rapidly. The pencil is in a slightly different place on each image so it seems to have worked.

Tried taking a photo of a 3ds with a 3ds. I Didn't have much luck with Pilotwings probably due to the fast motion and low light, but I think this one looks ok.

I'm late... argh! The fuji have no problem using the auto focus. I'll try to get a 3d video on youtube later.

Edit: Actually I am having trouble with double image now. In the fuji camera you can adjust the 3d of the picture/video to be closer (less 3d) and it works great. The problem is the fuji camera have trouble focusing close object in 3d. (left and right image is too far apart) I used the 3d adjustment in the fuji camera to fix that for viewing in the camera. When I take them out, they return to default and are too far apart. You can see that in the picture I took below.

The weird thing is that the 3DS seems incapable of shooting a sharp image even in great light. Inside in bad lighting is understandable but I would have though the IQ would be better in decent outdoor light. The feeling of 3D is heightened when things are actually in focus and sharp, with the 3DS you get a general feeling of depth but a lot of it is lost on the IQ.

There is actually a low light filter for the 3DS photo app. Pictures I take outdoors look fine, its the one indoors, that tend to have issues.

Also indoor photos that are strongly sunlit look better.

Anyone have archives of 3D photos, taken by professionals? Don't really care what of - scenery, people, whatever. Just looking to cram as much cool stuff on it as possible for when I visit my parents in a few days.

Probably not really what you're looking for, but I leave it here anyway:

Our friend Julie Watai is a famous and super cute Japanese photographer (her lates book is the bestselling “Hardware Girls“. She also work as gravure idol under the name Amano Ai.

To celebrate the International release of the Nintendo 3DS she decided to produce a gravure photo collection in 3D in collaboration with the Japanese figure artist KAZ Asada.

Click here to download the file with the photos.

Not 3D photographs I've taken, but as 3DS image experimentation this seems one of the more appropriate places to share. I took a couple magic eye images, shrunk them, and cropped them into separate left and right images so a screen like 3DS's can do the work your eyes would normally do to see a magic eye image. Seems to work pretty well. So if you're someone who's never gotten these, now is your chance to see what we see.

EDIT: Someone messaged me asking how I did this. After replying I decided to paste the reply elsewhere so it could be referenced.

I tried for hours to get it to work properly and it just doesn't work, in video or stills. You can 'sort of' get it to work but it never works properly.

Please make these crosseyed :( The jitter looks really bad
I'd prefer crosseye over jitter in a heartbeat, but it isn't natively supported on 3D Porch when you upload an MPO.

Yet:

I converted them anyway since you asked :)

Oh, and here's one I made via non-traditional means, it's a still from Iron Man 2:

It's not a conversion, and it's not exactly native 3D either. I just happened to be thinking outside the box at the time. The original is her standing by a surface that had her reflection in it. It was oriented at just the right perspective. I just had to reverse the reflection so it complied with 3D storage/viewing methods.

Well, the 3DS seems to be utterly inconsistent about whether it needs just an MPO or an MPO/JPG pair. The Pilotwings and Uncharted shots (nice one) wouldn't work without both, but rest were fine with just the MPO. Will update the OP to reflect this.

I had an interesting thought today.... ViewMaster reels. There are tons of them out there, and viewing them on the 3DS would be interesting.

Someone's even developed special software to automatically convert full reel scans into individual MPO files.

You're super awesome :) The scarlett one works, too! Her boobies come out of my screen!

So...I can't get this Merge option to work :( All the pics I saw before the thing was released made it look like it perfectly merging two people's faces together but when I actually use it, it just cuts my face out and pastes it on the other person's body. WTF? Can anyone get it to work properly?

Okay Gaf, how would I go about combining these two photos I took in Vegas together for tree-dee on my 3DS?

I think your eyes will explode with the fact that the cars are totaly diferent in each pic

The traffic is different in both pictures, so I doubt the effect would be pleasant.

Download StereoPhoto Maker
Open the program and go to File>Open Left/Right Images and it'll ask you to open the left image and then the right image.
Go to Adjust>Auto Alignment
Hit Alt+S to save an MPO.

Those won't work I'm afraid. Different traffic would create a weird effect. You could photoshop the cars from one to the other but that would probably set off the perspective and create a strange cut out effect.

Oh good. I'm not the only one who put Hitler into Face Raiders.

Hitler, Ghandi, Mussolini, Berlusconi, Obama, Merkel... I have quite a list of politicians in Face Raiders. lol

Outside those handful of cars, it came out beautifully. Please try it out. =) MPO

Awesome! Thanks so much.
No problemo. If you were trying to create a crosseye image just now, you want to swap the left and right URLs. For future reference, in StereoPhoto Maker, you would swap the left and right images (tap X), then click File>Save As Stereo Image. Or you could do Universal Freeview L-R-L to make a parallel and crosseye in the same picture.

I went downtown yesterday to check out the Cherry Blossoms and had to take some 3D pics. Click for MPO. Enjoy. There's a couple where you might need to adjust the 3D overlap with the circle pad, specifically the two with a branch coming straight out. I think I stood a little too close.

There are a decent number of old Stereoscope cards scanned and up on the internet -- and all of them should be in the public domain at this point.

Download a pile, batch convert with the Stereomaker software, and you have a pile of interesting, old-time 3D photos.

I have a 3D photo of Lincoln. Heh.
