But anyway, i've got a question regarding 3ds. Why the black blurry border sometimes when viewing a picture ?? (Like those shot with the camera of the 3ds).

Cause when i browse on the net a 400x240 mpo, it's full screen, but if i save it to the sd card, it's with blurry canvas...
The 3DS is taking two regular pictures and crossing them over each other to create the illusion of depth. While those pictures are being put over each other, some resolution is cut off on both sides. They introduce those black borders to cover this up.

That has nothing to do with the borders. They are not on the images: the 3DS displays them when displaying MPOs taken with a 3DS. The 3DS also crops the photos when displaying them (they are actually 4:3 640x480 if you view them on a PC) so you can "adjust" the overall depth using the circle pad.

If you take the 3DS MPOs, load them in Stereo Photo Maker then save them again, the 3DS EXIF info is lost and the 3DS will display them in full resolution. They show up in 4:3, though, so you can crop them to 640x384 to make them widescreen again if you want.

They look far better and much sharper this way, specially if you denoise and tweak contrast them in a photo editing program (just save as .JPS and rename to .JPG).

We should probably 'reboot' this thread to make it more 3DS browser freindly. Make the rules that you must post direct links the the MPO files and only one picture per post to keep within the 3DS browsers memory limits. That way people can just bookmark the thread in the 3DS browser and easily view the 3D pictures.

I might do it later if nobody else does.

Good idea.

Dear 3D Porch User,

I'm the owner of 3D Porch, and I wanted to thank you for your contributions to the site. All the wonderful images have encouraged me the whole way through.

Unfortunately, I've come to the point where I can no longer afford the time or money to maintain 3D Porch. I've been running it at a financial loss ever since it started. For the past three months, I've tried and considered nearly all possible options:

DONATIONS - I would need regular monthly donations to keep the site up, and I just don't estimate it being enough.

PAID ACCOUNTS - Again, there are some people interested in paying for accounts, but I'd have to really convert a lot of users to barely make it work out.

MORE ADS - I'm already making as creative use of ads as I can without trashing the site, but it's barely making enough.

MORE FEATURES - Offering titles, tagging, albums, or social features may improve some visibility in search engines (maybe doubling my traffic), but monetization of image sites is so weak, that it wouldn't really help me break even.

The bottom line is that 3D Porch would have to be 5x more popular to break even, and 10x more popular to even give me a decent trickle of income.

I don't see that happening, and so I'm going to have to close the site. I don't have an exact schedule, but here's a general roadmap:

- Allow uploads for the next 24 hours (but turn off the bulk uploader)
- Create some sort of download script or tool for users to capture all their work. I'll probably get this set up in the next couple days.
- Remove 99% of the content on the site in 14 days.
- Create a public, museum-like archive of 3D Porch in about 30 days. This museum will probably just have 500 or so photos.
I won't be sending any more emails. So if you want to stay up to date with what's happening, please follow @3dporch on twitter or check http://3dporch.com/faq for updated info.

- Phil

yeah but not really, how does that explain that for ex exmple, my native 400x240 mpo are full screen when browsed from internet, but with border when saved in the console...

Also 3dporch dying sucks, i will have to find an other place to host all that.

The good thing about 3DPorch was that it could trick the 3DS into uploading the MPO file. When I try to upload pictures from the 3DS to DropBox it only sends the JPG files. I think 3DPorch just re-wrote the file path before sending and the 3DS happily uploaded whatever it was told to.

3D Porch lives!

I'm going to get 3D Porch up and running again!

Thank you so much for your support these past couple weeks. People really do love this site, and it really is a shame to let it go. I've received many suggestions and offerings for free hosting. I think I can reduce my hosting expenses by 90%. I won't make much money off the site, but at least I can break even. I may pare down some features (like source images for left and right), but essentially the site will stay the same.

I probably should have uploads back again in a couple days.

- Phil

It doesn't trick it. The jpg file the 3DS normally uploads actually is an mpo file saved with a jpg extension. 3dporch just needs to know that those jpg files actually are mpo files.

Nope. I just looked in my SD card and the JPGs are plain JPGs. They won't load into Stereo Photo Maker if I rename them to MPO and they are all half the size than the corresponding MPO files too.

3DPorch just rewrites the upload filename to replace .JPG to .MPO. I just tested it by changing my browser user agent to match the 3DS browser and uploaded a JPG file using Firefox. It uploaded the MPO file instead.

3dporch is alive which is great!

But I start to regret the time I spent the last 2 weeks to code a website to replace 3d porch. Everything was nearly done when Phil announced 3dporch will live, so I didn't know what do it with it. So I decided to still release the website hoping it will be complementary of 3dporch.

It's here -> http://threeds.me

It's still a very early version but I hope you will enjoy it! And don't hesitate to give your feedback good or bad.

I wonder if there are a gallery with must see pics in mpo format, prefereable nuture pics.
I search some and only find a pack with Ai Amano pics =P

The jpgs on your SD card are plain jpgs, but the jpgs that get uploaded over the browser are the mpo files that have been renamed as jpgs.

Anybody take advantage of the 3DS Photo Showcase site on their 3DS or their browser yet? It's pretty cool, it's fun looking at fan made pics and you can vote for faves. So last week I submitted my own photo and it got approved within a few hours, "Mario Galaxy 3000." Made it using an old Wendy's Mario & Chomp toy, a MST logo stressball (to simulate a Galaxy style mini planetoid) and my MST3K Crow and Tom figures. Here's the link where you can view it in 3D on the system browser:
