indeed.

also, these problems are not new to Detroit. As much should be obvious...but it bares repeating. Detroit's scholastic and ACT performance have been shockingly low since at least 2000 (when I started taking note after moving to school at the University of Michigan). The Detroiters who came to Michigan were most definitely the exception to a very scary rule that exists within that city.

and trying to help address it feels like swimming against a white water rapid.
On a personal note, why go to UM?
Dint you know there was a superior school an hour away?

Rock on Detroit. Fistbump.

State? Both of my parents went there, actually. My aunts and grandmother went to UM, though. I believe she (grandmother) was one of the first black women to graduate with a Masters degree.

I applied to both but decided on UM because the programs I was interested in were superior there. I had no real problem with State.

I like Ann Arbor. Ever been to Zingermann's Deli?

Of course! Good food. I had an ex that worked there, as I recall.

and yea, it wasn't until much later that I realized how much of an oasis Ann Arbor is.

Yeah, I went to State. I'm surprised your parents allowed you to go to Michigan. : )
I wouldn't let MY kids go there. But you have good history at both.
Anyway... I enjoyed the rivalry. I miss Michigan sometimes. Even Detroit.

I live next door to a city of illiterates!! Outrageous, I say close the borders to Canada. Trust me, "Detrioters" have much worst qualities. Practically everyday Canadian police (windsor), handle disputes involving a "Detrioter."

It's strange, because metro Detroit has some of the best schools in the country. Detroit, on the other hand...

I also graduated from MSU (got accepted to UofM, didn't like the competitive nature between classmates). Loved it. Detroit education definitely doesn't extend its crappy nature outside the innercity. Michigan higher education is above average, for the most part.

But I'm moving to NYC in a couple months, so peace out MI.

oh, you relocated, eh? seems like everyone with good skills does. it's too bad, but if the jobs aren't there they aren't there, you know?

As for Michigan: yea because so much family went to both, their both held to equal levels of appreciation. I think my father always wanted to go to Michigan, where Bo recruited him to play football (making him partial to UM sports). But he did pretty well at State. Graduated high in his undergrad class, then stayed at State for his medical schooling, where he graduated #1.

Mom was a bit more partial to State, but she was just glad I applied.

Making things more interesting, I was born and raised in Cleveland, so I got shit from all the future Ohio State/Bowling Green/Cincy/OU kids. I'm one of the few who went out of state.

I remember I used to *hate* Detroit. That was when the potholes were everywhere and abandoned homes and empty spaces full of garbage were everywhere. While the potholes have been fixed, there are now more empty homes and open spaces full of garbage. Downtown by Pizza Popilas is great now, though.

actually, the report specifically mentions several suburban/metro cities.

What was that plan again, send all the immigrants to Detroit?! What thread was that. ?

Tax Free Gambling, 6 of the best titty bars in Ontario. TOONIE TUESDAYS LAPDANCE!!!

Yet another media source that isn't FROM Detroit trying to tell the country what Detroit really is.

Detroit is the heart of America: they work harder than you, they care about their families more than you, they drive luxury cars, and if you criticize them that means you just don't GET them.

At least, that's what the Super Bowl commercial led me to believe.

So you're saying Windsor is any better than Detroit? Didn't seem like it the times I was there. I'm sure Detroit was the cause of it's demise, though.

Anyway, Detroit actually has a big cultural upswing of late. Lots of foodies/techies are pushing new ideas through the city and there's actually a surprising number of cool, unique places to go now.

Did your dad play football at State?
#1 in medical school? Shit. I'm impressed.

And as for Windsor... Spiderman needs to realize that they better close their strip clubs NOW if they have any desire of keeping Detroiters out of there.

Windsorite-GAF represent! (windsor is such a shitty city, I cant wait to leave)

spiderman123, are you in Windsor? If so, my mind is blown

What does "functionally illiterate" mean though? Like, can't read a novel but they can get by? They can read easy words? What?

Nah, it's a sad story he tries to tell at least twice a year. He was a stand-out football and baseball player. In fact, he also got drafted to pitch for the Pirates. During his senior year, he injured his throwing shoulder in a football game played on some sort of hard surface. He was returning a punt and got tackled in a way that drove him into the hard ground, shoulder first. Pittsburgh Pirates dream over. Football dream over.

He then followed some cute chick to Western Michigan U where he became president of the Black Student Union (in the early 70s...lol). During his reign as President of that org, he threatened some football coaches that he'd tell recruits not to come if they didn't meet with some demands the black student body had...and followed through on the threat after they didn't cooperate. He started getting death threats subsequently, so he transferred to State. Met my mother there. The rest is history.

I'm assuming that's outside Joe Louis Arena. You can take it form there, I trust.

The GOP must be happy....those people are future Republican voters.
If they can read enough to mark an X beside the picture of the elephant on the ballot box, they're as literate as the GOP wants them to be.

Anyone have the % on how many of these functionally illiterate people possess firearms?

What happened with that plan to turn the outskirts of the city in farmland? I remember someone posted an article about it a while back

from that, you gleamed the notion that Detroiters are better than you? That was hardly the suggestion at all.

How did you from that, "they work harder than you, they care about their families more than you, they drive luxury cars, and if you criticize them that means you just don't GET them."

I have to hear this.

sounds expensive in the short term. not sure if the city can afford that. And remember, Detroit is the largest city (land mass) in the country, as I recall. It would take quite awhile to make a dent in that kind of project.

Art is subjective.

As in sometimes you're subjected to stupid bullshit.

You're analyzing my reaction a bit too deeply. I haven't seen the trailer in months, so I couldn't remember what exactly was in it.

I was off-handedly remembering the superiority complex that was the "Windy City" promo from the Super Bowl.

Art is just a way of expressing yourself. Some people make art that's painstakingly crafted and beautiful, and others just make pretentious "subversive" stuff.

understood. cheers.

I think the tone they were going for was that "We've had some real struggles here, but we don't suck. In fact we believe those struggles have made us stronger now. We have a long history and legacy of producing world-class shit (they do). And though we're not NY or The Chi or any of those cities...we're also not trying to be. We're unique in our own ways...and we're back now, so take a look at what we're building here. You'll be impressed."

that's what I got out of it.

thats so weird. I'm always surprised to come across others from windsor on the internet, but gaf, wow.

I'm currently at the University but planning to switch out

Kinda scary to realize that a mere 50 miles away, almost half a city has a reading ability not even on par with my ten year old self. Assuming the article isn't exaggerating.

Good story, but sad. I'm guessing he did alright for himself in the end.
I'm not surprised he had a hard time at Western. Good move going to State.
Nice talking to you.

I'm in my last year of an education degree, and functional literacy is certainly a hot political issue at the moment. The push to eradciate critical literacy in order to push functional literacy is certainly not the answer, I think we need a mixture of both forms of literacy.

I find our brains ability to organise language a fascinating area of study, can everyone read the following?

Unless your in the business or nursing program it makes no sense stay there. Best to switch out.

Windsor relies on the car industry like Detroit, but you know how that's going. Huge upswing of gamblers at the Caesars though

Hey, as much as this city sucks its making quick strides to move away from the auto industry. We've got a lot of new software companies taking advantage of the government incentives. Top 7 Intelligent Community or whatever its called recognition is also increasing investment

I knew something was up with this "Ripclawe" dude. Anytime there's a negative story involving blacks he's the threadstarter.
Checked out his profile and his "homepage" is filled with racist garbage.
Another clown i'll add to my ignore list.
