Is it the French movie Le Dîner de Cons by any chance? What did you think about it?

AndyD

aka andydumi
It is the 2011 American version. It was OK. The French movie was great. The American version from 1998, not as good. This new 2011 one much better, good but not great. Although the miniatures in this movie are amazing. They easily steal the whole show. I would recommend seeing it just for the miniatures.

We sometimes watch a foreign movie, then within a week or so the American version just for fun.

I'm not participating, but how does this work if you read a book that is a collection? I read 33 Shakespeare plays over the course of the last 3 weeks, but it's all in a collected works. Would I count all of those individually, since they're all separate works, or do I count the volume as a whole unto itself?

I don't think people are strict with rules here in the first place, call it how you see it ;) Tho, your case seem easy, Shakespeare plays are individual works so you have read 33 works.

[*]Geliebte Teufelin - 1/10 (worst book I ever read. Another free kindle book, though, so I only wasted time I guess)

[*]The Hunger Games - 7/10 (last third was a letdown)

Currently reading 11/22/63, after that I'll start with Game of Thrones.

Oh, I'm on Books 12/50, Films 24/50, Games 13/25
Definitely need to do some more reading over the summer. Should be around 20 books already :/.

I'm in this on the book front. It's a good way to keep motivated for summer reading w/o particular classes to necessarily motivate me.

Here's my list so far. Yes, it's entirely nonfiction/academic. I will be adding some fiction soon, I hope.

1. The Measure of Merit -- John Carson
2. Cosmopolitanism and the Age of School Reform -- Thomas Popkewitz
3. After Finitude -- Quentin Meillassoux
4. Trust in Numbers -- Theodore Porter
5. Objectivity -- Lorraine Daston and Peter Galison
6. A History of the Modern Fact -- Mary Poovey

At the current rate, I'm not going to come close to fifty; but, I'd at least like to read 10-to-15 over the summer break. We'll see how that goes.

Ashes, what did you think of On Writing? I've only recently got into King, haven't read that one yet.

On Writing: A memoir of a craft.

The book is in three parts

*life story until the beginning of writing the current book.
* writing help section
*and post the above two sections; you'll see what I mean when you read the book.

This is a good book in of itself, because Stephen King makes it easily accessible. It's short, insightful, funny in places, helpful and overall very readable. Because King wanted the book to be all the things aforementioned, it's more a summary of a ( economically) successful writer's life in the arts. Rather than how to be a critically acclaimed writer (in fact King reckons good writers can't be great).

I breezed through the opening, because I really only wanted to read the 'writing help' part, but that first part was actually insightful as well as poignant in parts, from a writing perspective as well.

The actual writing section, and the editing example is a summation of lots of advice found elsewhere, but still a good round-up of the main points. It isn't a style guide per se, rather a career writer's view on the pitfalls to avoid, and the habits to keep.

Tldr; recommended - with greater appeal for those interested in the art of writing.

Saw Coetzee's Foe on Harold Bloom's Western Cannon list and decided to check it out and really liked it, after that I have been steadly reading his works. I wonder why he isn't more popular, he has won the booker prize twice and on top off that he is nobel laureate, yet I don't know many people who have heard of him. Waiting for the Barbarians has been my favorite so far and after that Foe.
