500+ hour Metal Gear marathon on Twitch started today

Something I've never understood is why Eva jumped in the fire. I forget if she didn't actually know it was Solidus and not Big Boss. It'd make sense if she thought it was legitimately Big Boss but even then the emotional impact is kind of ruined under the hilarity of her jumping in fire over a mistaken corpse lol

I find it pretty emotionally well done but these things have always held me back from really "feeling it"

My understading is that Eva knows it's Solidus which makes this scene even more absurd.

This cutscene might be the epitome of what make MGS so great for me. The contrast between the super serious stuff and the comedy is so great. First we get Snake witnessing her mothers death and right after that a monkey just walks in.

Yeah urgh. Not a big fan of that. I don't take it very seriously but the series has some pretty legitimate emotional value. That sequence should not have been capped off with that.

If Big Boss wasn't there then how did Ocelot take over the SOP system?

Solidus has the same genetic code as Big Boss. It gives him the correct key to SOP. He inputs the key through GW.

There is one problem with this: GW was a planned loss in MGS2. The Patriots WANTED GW to be destroyed with Emma's virus. President Johnson, Ocelot, and Olga do all they can to facilitate Raiden stopping Solidus from gaining access to GW. Johnson himself gives Raiden the virus (the worm). It is a bit ridiculous that they would have an oversight of this proportion, with a pieced together GW being used against them. Not a big deal but it bothers me a little.

Always really liked that scene.

Solidus is an exact clone, unlike Snake and Liquid.

Ah, I see.

The Patriots aren't perfect, they also fell for Ocelot's Liquid trick.

And the virus was created by Emma, not them.

No you've got it all wrong Sub_Level

You were the lightning in that rain.
No, he was the rain, transfarred.

And the Patriots were just machines, with all the weaknesses of machines. If Snake and Sunny hadn't have stopped them they would probably have succumbed to obsolescence eventually anyway, as a static system trying to control a dynamic/chaotic world.

This, they can't account for each and every situation. Like Snake appearing on Big Shell in MGS2, for example.

3.0

Oh good, it's back!

This was brought up in an earlier post, but yes, Eva knew that body was not BB. She was actually the one to recover BB's almost-corpse and reconstruct it with Liquid and Solidus' body parts.

If they were truly advanced AIs, then they would be learning computers like Skynet. Not just operating on the same code for all eternity but actually expanding their worldview and become a new form of synthetic life.

Damn, I don't think I paid attention to it on my playthough (or I simply didn't remember it), but they even emulate the texture/polygon skewing.

I dunno, I have actually been theorizing lately that they might actually have intended for Snake to show up
"they" being the other AI that show up once GW becomes fully corrupted

No, the other AIs did not intend for Snake, Otacon, or Liquid to be there either. The whole point was for Raiden to carry on the mission by himself, with his codec support team and the ninja providing assistance in order to truly reflect Shadow Moses. There was no Solid Snake helping out, well, Solid Snake in Shadow Moses.

It just so happened they were still able to successfully carry out their S3 plan in spite of their appearance.

That shot in the helicopter of MGS1 Snake turning into Old Snake is still amazing. It looks perfect.

Absolutely, but it's a shame the trailers spoiled it.

Along with Liquid's Act 1 'Activate It' cutscene.

Along with Raiden vs Vamp.

Along with Raiden vs Gekkos.

Along with the intro cutscene.

Along with the introduction cutscene of the B&B Unit.

God MGS4 trailers spoiled a lot. Only Act 5 was hidden.

In that case, they would be evolving creatures, and differences would doubtlessly appear during that evolution, due to the different roles and responsibilities apportioned to the respective AIs. And the AIs were created by us flawed humans. Imperfect intelligences seeking perfection through constant experiential change, only furthering their flaws and their differences from each other...sounds familiar. And rather cool.

Not to mention they would have had to have been created in the late 80s, when 256MB hard drives would have been considered the cutting edge of miltech. But yeah, Metal Gear.

... and that's why I've been on a MGSV media blackout for a while now.

80s? Psh, Peace Walker already shows there was already an advanced AI in the 70s. AN AI WHICH ACTUALLY MAKES A CHOICE, THUS SHOWING SENTIENCE!

But yeah, in the final cutscene Big Boss even explains that the AIs mutated. They changed. It's what lead them from Zero's goals of creating a unified world to the war-torn world in MGS4.

Yeah, they mutated like viruses, and attacked the world they were supposed to unite. Or perhaps more like autoimmune disease, where white blood cells attack the body? Something like that.

I wonder if, if real viruses had sentience, they would think they were doing the right thing.

Edit: I need to finish my English Policenauts playthrough.

Mute time for me unfortunately.

Hey I love Final Fantasy VIII. I know how it feels like for a game you like to be constantly shit on lol. Luckily 3dogg and the other streamers still know a ton of stuff about MGS4 and have entertaining playthroughs.

FFVIII is arguably my favorite. Definitely off topic but you're not alone.

I don't disagree with his rant about the story from this point, it's all over the place but that being said I still like plenty enough about it to give it a pass.

I love all the MGS games, would be disappointed with continuous hate for any of them. But yeah, you're right.

Also love FF8, *high five*.

Most of you may know this, but

This is the voice actor for Vamp. Phil La Marr. He was on a comedy show called Mad TV.

This boss he is fighting, Crying Wolf, is voice acted by Debra Wilson. She was also on that same comedy show.

Old Snake is best Snake.

This version of him really resonated with me, it was after this game that his character really felt like a 'legend' to me.
